Re: Project Lex
Yeah I've been ripping around in it a bit. Taken a hand full of people for a spin and it feels pretty deng good I think. It's not what the Talon was, but that's OK, I'm still having a blast driving it. It's been awhile since I've driven something with some cojones!
Got into a little tussle with a G37 coupe and pulled away from him, winning :D |
Re: Project Lex
I have not had my ride yet! :kane:

Re: Project Lex
Just figured I'd update this, with the fact that there is nothing to update :) Since the dyno appointment, the car has been driven nearly 5 days/week, and has made several 500 mile round trips to Fargo and back. Not too many issues, so haven't touched a thing for the most part. The only issue that came up was one time the clutch slipped in 4th, but I think that was partially my fault for slipping it during normal driving/shifting too much that day, and also right before that pull. Hasn't slipped since. Man it's so nice to be able to just hop in, turn the key, and just go without having to tinker around or anything. Idles great, drives great, and still feels strong under WOT (already has a few kills under her belt). The exhaust note is pretty much perfect (with the exception of the WG dump, not a fan), sounds nearly stock when just cruising around, yet a bit louder when under WOT but not obnoxiously loud. I'm real happy with the spool time as compared to the Talon. This turbo so far seems to have been a perfect street/strip setup for my taste, with a great balance between power and lag. I'm sure the removal of ~6' of piping this winter will improve the spool by a few hundred RPM as well :)
Car has been a blast to drive, I'm excited every time I hop in. Even let some others ride/drive it, and they mostly have nothing but good to say. I'm equally as excited for winter to arrive so I can tear into her again and hopefully have it ready for 600hp in the spring!! Plans this winter are: - Homemade Front Facing Intake Manifold (eliminate ~6' of piping) - IS300 COP/Wasted Spark ignition setup - Tranny and rear diff (haven't fully decided on what to run yet) - Zinc coated brake rotors (all I can find are slotted and/or drilled, anyone know where to find blank/solid rotors that are zinc'd?) - Re-paint calipers (they look pretty beat up) - Wheel spacers for the front wheels - Recirc WG dump back into exhaust So once again, big thanks to all the local shops and individuals for hooking me up with great parts, service, and tune. I couldn't have wished for anything better :D |
Re: Project Lex
So do MkIV's and IS300's run the same kind of ignition stock?
|
Re: Project Lex
Glad to hear Bman, we will have to do some frum rolls & digs (if u want) before you turn her up!
|
Re: Project Lex
Man, that is really good to hear! Having a reliable fun car is what I have always loved owning an evo, I'm glad this car is doing you so well!
Don't take this the wrong way, but you said perfect street/strip combo....have you taken it to the drag track at all yet? Any plans to do so? Just curious. |
Re: Project Lex
I believe it is identical to the Supra N/A VVTi ignition, but is not the same as a Supra TT ignition (6 coil COP). The IS300 system is similar to a DSM wasted spark w/ 1 coil per 2 cylinders, except the 3 coils are COP instead of remotely mounted. Here's an idea of what it looks like.
http://www.clublexus.com/gallery/dat...CoilPacks1.jpg As for the strip, yeah I definitely want to go. But not going until I get a stronger drivetrain setup, so maybe next year. I need to figure out what I'm going to do drivetrain, and get that done this winter. |
Re: Project Lex
sounds just like a Evo ignition, with COP, 2 cylinders per coil.
Maybe then you can get an intake on that turbo ;) |
Re: Project Lex
Mmm wasted spark, so deliciously simple.

Re: Project Lex
Sweet action! Any plans for suspension at all?
|
Re: Project Lex
I would eventually like to address suspension, but might not be in the budget for this winter. I'm still not 100% sure of what the current suspension is. I believe it is Eibach Pro-Kit springs (not sure if they are SC300 or Supra), and the shocks look OEM (not sure if they are stock SC300 or Supra).
I've heard that it's a bad idea to mix n match SC300 suspension parts with Supra suspension parts (i.e. Supra springs w/ SC300 shocks). So I'd like to eventually have it all be Supra parts because there are more options for Supra vs. SC300. No idea what actual components I'd go with yet, I'd need to research a bit. A Supra Pro-Kit w/ Supra AGX's might be a decent cost effective setup though. |
Re: Project Lex
Well winter plans for Teh Bean may be on hold for awhile. Just got engaged, so this winter I will be focused more on wedding planning and house hunting since one of us will be moving (I live here, she lives in Fargo). Exciting stuff :D

Re: Project Lex

Also I say you take it to the track with us on saturday! |
Re: Project Lex

Re: Project Lex
Lol, I wish. Teh Bean is sitting in a pole barn in Hudson for the winter, and will remain untouched. My efforts and money are going towards our wedding and house hunting over the next year now.

Re: Project Lex
oof dah. $3,500 for a getrag? When the time comes an R154 may be a much cheaper option. They seem pretty damn stout.
|
Re: Project Lex
This is why the tranny thing has been such a hard choice for me. I've been debating different options for damn near a year now.
1) Getrag 6spd - strong as hell, but lots of $$$ even for a 100k mile used one. 2) R154 5spd - somewhat strong if built right but I'd compare it to a built DSM tranny (just a matter of time before it wears down or explodes), less $$$ 3) Built Supra 4spd - Somewhat strong (~800hp), lots of $$$ to do it right, not sure how to sync it's shifting with Megasquirt (pull timing) 4) GM 4spd (4L80e) - Would be awesome, but lots of $$$, not sure how to sync it's shifting with Megasquirt (pull timing) 5) GM 3spd (TH350/400) - Strong, less $$$ than 4spd but still a good chunk of $$$, only 3 speeds sucks, not sure how to sync it's shifting with Megasquirt (pull timing) What would make it easier if I just do like brownman said and bought an NSX for a street toy, then just turned this into a pure drag queen. Then I'd just rock an Auto 2spd or 3spd and be done :) |
Re: Project Lex
I know a few locals up here that make good power and are on high mile stock R154's. I think Dan with the blue supra still has his original trans in his 2JZ swap mk3, and he has made over 550whp for years and years. Steve Keeney is still running his stocker isn't he? I know he pooped a trans last year, but I thought that one was junk when he got it or something like that. Steve would be the guy to talk to though, he is toyotanos on forums

Re: Project Lex
Street cars are more fun than drag cars IMHO...I guess I've never owned one but it seems like a LOT of work and money for not a ton of payback...more fun to just build a fun street car and then just go see how it does on the drag strip.
|
Re: Project Lex
I agree with scheides drag cars don’t give you a ton of payback. You cannot go wrong if you have both! I still drive my talon on the street, mainly to work and back, it’s still fun to drive on the street. It never breaks on the street but is plagued at the track.

No big update, but she's officially back home and out of storage. Going to do an oil change and start driving her around when it's nice out. No plans for any more mods at this point as my hands are already full with wedding planning and the new house.

Re: Project Lex
Changed the oil with the finest oil and filter available. OK maybe not, just the cheapest stuff that was on sale at Oreilly's Lol... She's ready for 2012, don't really plan on touching a thing!

Re: Project Lex
Tiny update. I decided since the clutch has been holding really well lately, to install my MBC. I turned it all the way down (open), then just gave it a couple turns to tighten in. It appears I'm now at a steady 13psi (was at more like 10 creeping to 12 before).
Clutch is holding fine, but I no longer have traction in 2nd gear, lol. Whatever, I think I may just start slowly turning it up little by little over awhile until I find the point where the clutch starts slipping and then back it off a little. I need to get some sort of LSD in this thing someday... |
Re: Project Lex
OMG!
2JZ is so sexy. I should just put one in my car or wait, I will record you doing pulls and listen to them while I drive my car!! I hope it holds 15psi! |
Re: Project Lex
I thought you put a new clutch in this thing last year, why would it skip? Just from abuse, design limitation, or do you have enough miles on it already that its time?
