Front line makes badass products! I see you used grey silicone. Much better than the black stuff.

Very nice. I want to get there vc for the evo 3

Dayum, shiny!! What's the purpose of the rear cover, more fluid, higher fill hole, more bling? Strength? Either way, hotness.

turbotalon1g 01-19-2014 12:17 PM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Strength I believe.

Fejery4491 01-19-2014 12:20 PM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Its for strength. But definitely offers a touch more of the bling factor than a factory cover haha

The stud keeps the differential caps from backing out if it ever happens.

Mark Leasure 01-19-2014 02:03 PM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

It helps avoid bearing cap deflection on the ring gear. It keeps the ring & pinion mated properly, that's the theory. I broke a rear end last year, I'm hoping this will help.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Did you break it on the launch? What was the 60' or estimated 60'?

Mark Leasure 01-27-2014 09:08 PM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I suspect I hurt the rearend launching it, it broke right after shifting into second.

I picked up a couple of vibrant clamshell clamps. I keep bending ic pipe with over torquing t-bolt clamps, causing boost leaks. These should solve that issue.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

How much are those? I bent my AMS IC pipes a bunch as they were aluminum with my tbolts.

I didn't have as many issues, none really, with SS piping. But maybe these are on option.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Makes me want stainless piping again. Electric impact on IC pipes FTW!

I've always preferred aluminum to save the weight plus dissipate a little extra heat. Use a 1/4" driver and don't go gorilla-mode.

That doesn't always work when you're running Leasure boost though haha

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I never lost a coupler with the big setup the evo had.

I'm kind of surprised Mark didn't do this earlier since it seems everything he does is an engineering masterpiece it seems.

Kracka 01-28-2014 10:38 AM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Although I don't run the same boost levels as these guys, I've never popped one either.

Murlo26 01-28-2014 10:43 AM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I popped my UICP a few times before I had tbolts, running ~38psi.

But once I had the tbolts it stayed together. I think what Mark is saying is that the tbolts worked fine they are just easy to dent the piping with...which is what I did too. It's easy to over tighten.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I've had the stock woven piping blow off before, but never a silicone coupler.

Probably time for a set of these, or Wiggins clamps to handle Leasure boost without torquing the t-bolts to 100 ft/lbs. :D

Or just use SS pipes?

Maybe Mark is useing paper thin piping for weight savings so he couldn't tighten T-bolts as much as you!:cheer:

They are cheap for a BAller like you. :google:

I paid 210 for three 3inch a few years ago.

I have 3 of those clamps on my car and work great. Only advice I'd give is Just make sure to use a little oil on the rubber O-rings so it's easier to put together and they don't dry out and crack or break. That's what I did and no leaks or pop offs in 3 years!

Halon 01-28-2014 01:04 PM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I was going to post the same thing Steve. If I ever get to the point where I keep blowing pipes apart at the coupler, I'm just going to make a homemade boost brace setup.

Either way, looking good man.

mondale 01-28-2014 01:45 PM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I use the vibrant vanjen clamps that Mark is using on all but one of my intercooler piping connections. I have never blown any of these apart, but have ripped a few o rings. It seems that they get swollen over time from lubricating them. Boost braces still require you tighten the clamps on the coupler. If you do a good job lining the ferrules up before welding them onto the pipe ends, it makes a 10 second job of installing a pipe connection that is good to 75 + psi. My friend also has had good luck with the pegasus clamps that are sold on ebay which are a cheaper but still effective alternative to the wiggins/vanjen assemblies. Misalign them while you are welding them on though, and you will pay!!!!

That's probably 100% true. I forgot all the piping on my car was stainless.

I'd love to take the qtp Rota combo you had. I'm sure the evo will be happy

Mark Leasure 01-29-2014 08:42 AM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

The cost was just over 100 shipped on ebay. Mondale good to know you have usage history with them, I was wondering how well they worked in our higher boost applications. Some users on the Yellowbullet forum are convinced that vibrant has the highest durability, reliability and ease of use. I think it will be super useful for maintenance and stopping leaks from bending pipes.

I run 3” silicone couplers on the outlet side of the intercooler in the evo, at around 35 psi, with no issues. I have had couplers blow off on the race car at higher boost, hence the need for over torqueing the t-clamps.

Yes a boost brace would work too!

Just the intake was polished.

It’s been a while since my last update. I sent my turbo out to be rebuilt, since it was pushing a little oil in the exhaust housing. I finally got it back and installed it. I upsized the turbo oil drain to AN10 from AN8 too.
I also sent out my injectors to FIC for testing, cleaning, and balancing. The results were interesting. The 2150’s were within 2% match of one another, however the flow rate was down to a 1950 average! My secondary 900’s were spot on. FIC was able to get the 2150 back in spec.
I took the oil pan off the car to update the turbo drain fitting and to inspect the lower end. Everything looks good. I also welded in another clamshell IC piping clamp. It is ready for the season! I don’t know if I’m going to get to my K-member done this year unless I get started very soon or purchase one.

Yesterdays temperatures were too nice. I got the Talon on the ground last night with the new 15" rims and tire combo. Looks mean.

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...171001_HDR.jpg

I also mounted a push button switch to my steering wheel for launch control if I cannot figure out how to get the AEM to take care of it automatically (I need to be able to configure an output on the EMS when the 2 step is active). It's a bent piece of sheet metal attached to the back of the wheel. It turned out nice.

How does the button on the steering wheel signal the launch control? Or did I just answer my own question? lol

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I got a little done this weekend. I picked up a CAS cover from MAP and finished the wiring for the launch solenoid, it is wired to the switch on the steering wheel and the EMS can control it automatically(Activated when the 2-step is active).

Oh and I almost forgot, I'm going to start building a backup short block. I'm going to build an aluminum rod 2.2 SLR motor. One of the ways to make a 2.2L is to use a 2.0 block, 94mm crank with a 153mm rod using the normal 2.3L stroker pistons. This will allow me to rev out the motor a lot more, with safety. I'm also going to go high compression too. I will be selling some motor stuff soon, my current short block will be up for sale. I also have 2 spare 100mm 6-bolt cranks, a 1G built head, some other race stuff I don't plan on using.
