Re: Project Lex
I thought you were going to use por15?
|
Re: Project Lex
I think powder coating anything possible is a great idea..we have a great local and reliable resource for this and cost is low enough to make it worth it.
Looking good man! |
Re: Project Lex
Exactly, while it's out might as well just get everything coated that I can.
I did considered por15, but just decided to use Rustoleum. Don't think I ever said that I was 100% set on the stuff. |
Re: Project Lex
I've been doing research to undercoat my civic and apparently por15 is pretty spendy and needs a lot of prep, for something that you plan on not seeing any salt it looks like you went the right way.

Re: Project Lex
This is super random but I had a dream last night about you and your car. You got the trans and rear end in a rush to make an appointment with Shane and you threw it in and turned up the boost w/o changing anything else and made 599...you were flipping outwith excitement!

Lol, Scheides you must have gone back and read posts 578 - 586 or something...
Anyhow, no huge updates, but I did get 2 coats of paint on the rear diff. Looks much better I think compared to the old!! Going to give her one last light coat and call it good. |
Re: Project Lex
Haha no homo!

Shot a light coat of black on the wheel hubs and rear axles to clean them up and prevent rust. Put the last coat of black on the diff. And shot the areas under the car where I put the rust inhibitor. The paint already feels pretty solid so I think it'll be good.
Depending on how much they end up quoting me for that rear subframe, I may listen to you brownman and just shoot it with this stuff too, I'm liking it so far! I also just purchased a pair of new rear brake rotors (slotted, zinc coated) off ebay :) |

Took the rear subframe to AA Driveshaft in Anoka, they were able to press out the old bushings. They said getting the new ones in may be tricky though. Amazing how hard it is to find a shop that can do this stuff.
Anyway, here some pics. Old bushings out, new bushings arrived and will be going in once I get the subframe cleaned up / coated :) Old ones out: http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1353975018 Rear subframe ready for cleaning / coating: http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1353975018 New bushings from Curt at Elmhurst Toyota: http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1353975018 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1353975018 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1353975018 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1353975018 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1353975018 |

Picked up the trans today. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1354235882 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1354235882 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1354235882 |

New chinese special eGay rear rotors showed up today. Slotted / zinc plated. Not too bad for $79 shipped :D
And since I know someone is going to ask, I did not buy these because they were slotted. I bought them because they were zinc coated. If I could have found blank/solid zinc coated ones for a reasonable price I would have chosen those. I plan on getting these same ones for the front as well. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1354315272 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1354315272 |

Re: Project Lex
Yep, that's pretty much why I wanted zinc.
|
Re: Project Lex
that transmission looks pretty beefy, looks very similar to a STi 6speed, minus the front diff. how much does it weigh do you think?
|
Re: Project Lex
No idea on a number, but definitely more than your standard dsm awd trans. I was still able to load/unload it from the truck by myself, but it wasn't easy.
|
Re: Project Lex
i know the STi 6speed in around 100lbs more than a wrx 5speed, hopefully it doesnt have any issues putting down the power you want like i said it looks big and stout
|
Re: Project Lex
If SP can push 1200hp through theirs with several drag passes & dyno pulls, then I think it'll handle anything my little 61mm dishes out.

Twin 61's, what do you think this is, a Lambo or something? :D
Got the rear subframe back from Powder Keg where it was coated semi-gloss black. Goal was to keep it clean/oem looking, and look good as new. Turned out perfect, thanks Tim! Also dropped off my rear diff cover for them to powder coat as well. |

Very small update.
Got some new hardware in the mail today from Curt @ Elmhurst Toyota to replace some of the old rusty/crappy hardware. Any other hardware I need I'll either just clean up the old ones or go get new stuff from Ace Hardware. |
Re: Project Lex
Another mini-update.
Cam choices for the GE (non-vvti) head are extremely limited due to the exhaust cam requiring a gear to spin the Distributor and cam/crank sensors. The only simple option is to order a set of upgraded cams from a company called TTC, who basically has webcam hardweld stockers and grind to them to TTC's specs, which they then sell the sets for around $900/pair. That's a tough pill to swallow for a DSM guy used to buying a set of used HKS's for $300, haha. So I've been on the hunt for quite some time to try and find a more affordable solution. Ended up coming across a company called Schneider who does camshaft regrinding. So I purchased a set of spare stock cams for $100 shipped. Will be shipping them to Schneider who will regrind them to any spec I want for $250/pair. That's a helluva lot better than $900, and I can get them ground to any spec I want :) And since I know someone is going to ask, I did contact Delta Cams as well, and they told me they do not do 2jz cams. So anyway, I really want to keep this car a street car. I love the sound of lope at idle just as much as the next guy, but I care more about idle quality, and low end torque. So I want to keep overlap somewhat low if possible, but also don't want to totally hinder performance. So Looking at their high lift 264 grind: http://schneidercams.com/264F-HL_2JZ.aspx They said they can customize the grind as well, so I may consider asking them to bump the duration out the 268 to soften the ramp up, and maybe get a little more power without going all the way to a 272. Either way, glad I found a cam option that isn't going to cost me a G. |
Re: Project Lex
Nicely do, are they going to have you shim anything to account for the camshaft grind?
|
Re: Project Lex
These heads don't have HLA's like DSM's, so shimming is part of a cam install usually anyway. Some people have said they got away without shimming with other cams, but I wonder if those people really check. Most people I've heard from have to shim.
So yes I'll have to shim the buckets, but it's nothing I wouldn't have likely had to do anyway. I was considering a shimless bucket setup, but starting to think the return on investment for that isn't really worth it for me as I'm not really looking to rev anywhere past 8k. |

Bushings are in the subframe. Also some homemade rear diff ear bushings made from 80A poly, thanks again K-dog.

Started putting the rear sub-assembly back together. Really liking the fact that I bought new hardware to replace some of the rusty bolts. However they screwed up and sent me the wrong two cam-bolts for the lower control arm. So I have the old rusty ones in there for now until they send me the correct ones.
Gave things a light coat of black paint here and there to touch things up and keep it all clean. Also got my rear diff back from PowderKeg, done in "soft silver". Looks great! Slowly but surely will continue just putting it all back together. And I love how everything is just so much cleaner now! Some pics of it coming back together. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355623949 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355623949 New hardware :) http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355623949 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355623949 Diff cover "soft silver". Again just going for a clean and like new look. http://www.powderkegcoatings.com/wp-...ilvercover.jpg |

All that powder coating looks really good! And is giving me ideas lol

Thanks all :)
More small updates. Things are going slowly but surely. I basically spent way too long trying to get the stock bushings out of the rear diff, but I eventually got them out. Poly bushings are mostly in. I put the new diff cover on. I also cleaned up some hardware that was looking crappy. Shot it with a light coat of rust inhibitor primer than a light coat of silver, so hopefully they'll stay rust free now. Here's a couple pics.
