Tiny update: :) And yes it's held in place with it's own hardware, jackstands were just used to help me keep it level while I jacked it up with a floor jack.
http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355887991 And some pics before it went in all put together. So nice and clean! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355887991 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355887991 This one you can kinda see the cleaned up diff cover bolts, and the cleaned up diff to subframe mounting bolts. Details... http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355887991 And last one shows the homemade poly diff ear bushings in place. Basically goes subframe, large washer, poly bushing 1, diff ear, poly bushing 2 (stock metal insert is reused in the middle), then the stock concave washer cleaned up with a coat of silver. Thanks again K-dog :D http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1355887991 |
Re: Project Lex

Re: Project Lex
Thanks man. And oh yeah I plan on driving it a lot, just no more salt :)

Suspension is on. New rotors are on. Calipers on and bolts are TIGHT (for those who were on the fall cruise haha). Tightened up everything!
My cam cores came in, so I'll be sending them off to get reground tomorrow. The 2 missing bolts for my lower control arm showed up so will install them tomorrow as well. Then basically just need install the driveshaft, bleed the brakes, install exhaust, attach rear wheels, and fire her up and take it for a test drive around the block :D |
Re: Project Lex
Looks like you are moving right along! Great work, Brandon!

Nice progress!!!

Re: Project Lex
Looking good! You are going to be bored come January when you are all done!

Re: Project Lex
Looking good B-dawg. Wanna come over and do mine next?

And lol, Jet, there's still a lot of shit I gotta do to the front half of the car now. Once this rear end is done, the motor/trans is coming out next. Ideally the longblock will stay assembled, but I want to replace any gaskets/seals that I see are leaking. I bought some BC valve springs that I'd like to install, and also these regrind cams. Then some other misc stuff like weld a drain fitting to the pan vs. the current bolted fitting. Then start working on installing the new trans. That will probably take awhile and a bit of cursing. Then install the IS300 ignition setup, and then build my FFIM. Then when that's all done, do a little body stuff, paint. So lots of stuff yet! |
Re: Project Lex
Went out to button everything up. Found out the driveshaft won't bolt to the new diff. Research fail on my part, apparently I was supposed to swap out the flange from my old diff onto this one. Oops :( Diff has to come back out. Just the diff though, not the whole subframe atleast.

just a small set back, looks good!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvdmgx2hv4s&hd=1 Guess I need to work on the cold start settings for when it's 10* out. E85 no like cold starts :D |
Re: Project Lex
Wow, one whole battery charge per start in the cold. haha
Nice pants btw!! LOL |
Re: Project Lex
Pump it like the old days! LOL

Also just took it for a spin around the block. All seems good! I actually really like how this diff feels with the 5spd. Gears feel a little longer than they used to. I've never driven a TT Auto rear diff 5spd combo, but hell I'd rock this rear end in a heart beat with a 5spd as a cheap alternative to a TT Auto one. Only thing I notice on the test drive was the exhaust kinda hits the subframe every so often, which it did before. So that is something I think I'm going to address as well. I hurried myself too much building the exhaust, so I'm going to redo it and make sure I do as good and clean of a job as possible. So with the test drive over, and rear end seems to be good as new, I'll be moving on to tearing into the front half of the car now :) |
Re: Project Lex
yay!
|
Re: Project Lex
I forgot, which rear diff are you using now? What will your speeds at redline look like for each gear?
|
Re: Project Lex
Brake set-up is looking pretty solid. ;)
|
Re: Project Lex
Awesome! Glad this part of project went well for you and you can kinda 'close the book' on it before moving forward.

Speeds I don't know, but it should end up being very similar to a stock TT 6spd Supra. The rear diff is close, the 350z trans gearing is close. |

Game on, time to start draining fluids, and get that pig outta the engine bay!
http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1356725589 Also, picked up a set of BC valve springs from MAPerformance. Thanks again Chris! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1356725589 |

Well got about a 2hr start on it today. Got the oil, coolant, and PS fluid drained. Got the work area taped off since I know it's going to become a tool rack and I'd like to keep the paint as nice as possible. Got the front bumper removed, FMIC and piping removed, bunch of stuff unplugged and labeled. Slowly but surely is the way I work now-a-days :) Leaving it like this for the night, will hopefully get another couple hour crack at it tomorrow!

Re: Project Lex
Is this the ignition/forward facing intake and ghetto-pipe delete portion? Will this allow you to do something with the MAF then as well?
|
Re: Project Lex
Basically I'm still trying to do one at a time as much as possible. So this will just be replacing gaskets to eliminate leaks, some other clean up stuff, and new trans. When I out it back in I want the ignition, intake, all that to still be the same so it hopefully starts and idles nice still. Will probably also do some freshen up in the head, along with the new springs and cams too. I just really feel like the the FFIM and ignition is going to take a bit of dialing in to get things running right, so I don't want to do that at the same time I'm doing everything else. Want to make sure I start with the car working well, then do those so I know if something isn't running right, its that and not something else.

Re: Project Lex
Thats the best way to do it. Step by step. Can the stock bottom end handle the power you want to make? Are you going to do thicker head gasket?
|
Re: Project Lex
^ sounds like a good idea, install 10 diffrent things.. having an issue, you'll end up trying to trouble shoot the issue for days.
|
Re: Project Lex
I agree. I tore everything apart with the 1st Talon and kicked myself for doing it. One step at a time is the best approach.
|
Re: Project Lex
The stock bottom end can take tons. People have made 1000hp on the stock bottom end, but it can't really sustain that level. I personally would trust it up to around 800. 2jz bottom ends are tough as hell. The NA bottom ends are pretty much identical to the turbo ones, just no oil squirters, and higher compression pistons. That's it.
No thicker gasket, I'm keeping it stock 10:1. Just some MAP headstuds. With e85 and full standalone control of ignition and fuel, I should be fine. |
Re: Project Lex
Nice work, I like all of the attention to detail the rear parts. Awesome that the stock block can handle that much too!
|
Re: Project Lex
If you do take the head off, which head gasket are you going to run? Seems like a lot of the mk3 guys like the HKS stopper or whatever its called.
|
Re: Project Lex
I will run an OEM NA headgasket. I like the idea of 10:1 compression. I don't really see a good reason at this point in time to get a thicker HG. It will lower my compression, and move the squish outside of the ideal range. If for some reason it just turns out to not work, I will re-asses it then.

Re: Project Lex
Nice! Engine out of the car makes it so easy to work on, love this part. Fram oil filter, really?! LOL.
I see a 4x8 sheet of plywood under there, did that work ok with the hoist or did the wheels get caught on it? |
