All the tubing is chromoly. It needs to be to meet SFI 25.1E.

I should have some good pics sometime this week or weekend of a rolling chassis and body. :)

Hopefully the FEA will at least isolate the major stress concentration areas so you can address those.
That's the problem; they're rather complicated. I plan to send them to Advanced Design Concepts in Pewaukee.

Reading that thread really intrigues me, considering the amount of time you have invested in this entire project, why do you publicize everything? Since you don't have the financial resources that many shops do (as stated on EvoM), you can be sure that people will be copying your work. When I get the CAD models of the parts I'm having scanned, there is no way in hell that I will even think of freely giving them out. I'm sure that I'll selectively give them out but that's it.

On a side note, what is your background, Aerospace Engineering?

Are you using Oxy/Acet to do the preheat and cool down? I have read through the process several times but I haven't done it yet. My cage is chromoly, so I will get to play with it whenever I get around to putting the cage in.

On thin walled tubing you dont technically need to stress relieve the welds. I preheat the tubes just using MAPP gas to sweat the pipes. Once all the welding is done I will use an oxy torch and heat crayons... mark the pipes around 1" from the welds and start ocilating the torch heating it up evenly.

The chromoly does crack if you attempt to weld too hot, or too slowly. If you dont shield it while its cooling it also tends to crack. Im sure you already know this but it needs to be welded with a Tig Welder. You wont need all that beafer of one for a simple cage.. All you really need is around 80 amps and make sure you have some sort of pedal control or hand control for the heat input. Use ER80D-S2 filler rod and pure argon for the shielding gas. The Tungsten is the red one.. I think it is 3% Thoriated (Which is also radioactive I believe so dont eat it or something) :)

The reason I publish this stuff is because I dont care.... it is my hobby. I dont make money at this and if I do someday then perhaps I will keep more of it secretive... I never posted the actual cad files and it would be extremely difficult to copy the exact specs... could you get it close, of course.Then again go on Ebay and buy one of Marco's intake manifolds for half price. Once I sold 5 of them someone would tear it apart and copy it if they thought there was a good reason to do so.

This is just my hobby... I will make a header and intake manifold for myself. If I decide to maybe Ill make a few extras and sell them. I dont ever plan on making this a money making career though... if I get a few hundred bucks every once and while cool.

What exactly do you do with the crayons? Was that just for marking? Or are you putting that on the weld to shield it during cooling? I have the TIG covered, I have a Miller Sychrowave 250.

The crayons arent actually crayons.. they are heat markers... they will melt at a certain temp. That way you know when you have heated it enough.

I honestly wouldn't have attacked the big dogs with your dreams and aspirations while only owning a partially caged Evo, but that is just me. I hope you can contend on that level, it would be really cool to see a local, self-sponsered vehicle to pull it off.

Just curious though. How large is your guy's shop down there?

It is definately something to kill boredom. And the only people I really made fun of was AMS.. I defended Buschur and I gotta say I like the guy. And hey, racing is a competition after all :)

Just enough for 4 cars to be worked on reasonably... you could probably squeeze 7 or so if you really wanted but you couldnt really work on them at all. More of a big garage then a shop really :) Its cheap rent and is big enough for our personal cars so it works.

If you haven't shopped around the turbo manufacturers or big retailers yet, I'd bet you could get a turbo sponsored with the promise of some magazine coverage and attend some big races. Building something that nobody else is currently doing attracts sponsors. You might get stuck with some shitbag like Slowboy, or you might actually get some good sponsorship, it's worth a shot. :nod:

Steve's got a point though, seems to be the way to go is trade coverage for products vs cash, even if you get you hands on some product you don't always use, sell it for some funds to use on other racing expenses.

That is quite amazing that you're still working for only 9/hr. It seems to me you have enough skillz to work for maybe a car or plane manufacturer or a medical device company or something.

Good luck on the project evil. My question to you is, Have you applied at a place that you can put your talents to good use? you could be making much more then $9 bucks an hour someplace else. You will likely have to get the fuck out of winona (or MN altogether) but hell you would have your project done in a week if you had the financial backing of a good job. I would say put together a portfolio of your inventions and submit it to a company like Garrett, PM me if you need help getting your foot in the door.

:) Well for now Im stuck in Winona anyways. Trina needs to finish school before Ill move again. The pay sucks but the job is kinda neat and hopefully it will help out with my car. I have access to tons of Aluminum I could probably get very cheap or free if he decides to help me out. I also have Lexan, a CNC brake, CNC Sheer, CNC Router, etc, etc...

I forgot to tell you... the Chromoly does tend to crack if you arent careful. I am trying to figure out exactly how to make it crack 100% yet but it seems to be when you use too much heat, stay in one spot too long, try to fill a big crack (Bad notching) or obviously with no gas.

I didnt get a chance to read before the thread got cleaned but I heard Im some sort of a drug dealer :) I wish I knew all that because Id probably have more money to spend, lol!

Not sure yet... it won't be a powerglide though... not enough TQ for a two speed I doubt. The rear will most likely be a modded 9" or a strange housing.

Well the chassis and body united last night :)

It was good news, the body did not need any contorting to fit, all the tubing lines up perfectly, the halo and hoop are in the correct spots and the rear end will fit where it was supposed to. Looking at it with the body on it makes it seem MUCH closer to a car also!

Vassil and I, along with Tim (EvilEvo) picked it up last night and set it down on the chassis.

I suspect the Evo body to weigh around 250lbs and the Eclipse body to weigh around 175lbs cause that was a lot easier to move than the Evo. We all practically did it with 1 hand.

The whole assembly wont be sitting at ride height with rubber for a little bit yet. I still need to finish the front end design and make a jig for it all. I have a mockup axle for the rear but the body needs a TON of trimming to get those big fuckers under there nicely. Me, Trina and Vassil are gonna be gone for a week or so also so its a few weeks out before it really gets another big bump in progress. Im gonna try to get the jig at least designed in Solidworks before I take off but well see.

The good news is after the assembly is at ride height with rubber there isnt much else really as far as the chassis goes. A bunch of .032 Aluminum, a steering column, pedals, parachute mount and not much else aside from the plates to bolt the body to the chassis.

Im still shooting for it to make some passes on the 4th of July. It should drive before then Im hoping.
