Re: Cold weather issues?
I have to say I have been *insanely* impressed my car so far this winter. This fall, I was worried my mini-battery was on its last legs. With the headgasket issues the car sat for a few 5-day stretches or so and even didn't start once. Since the car has been running happily again, I have had *zero* battery issues and it consistently cranks right over, even in the -11' weather we've been having.
I have heard and seen horror stories of guys running E85 in the winter and having hard-start problems. I am happy to report that my carts on the second or third crank every time (turn key, crank-crank-vroom!) and needs little to no warm-up time, especially since someone unlocked a bit of that info from the stock ECU for tweakage. Lastly, snow tires. It's been 10 years since I've had a car with snow tires, and all I gotta say is DAMN I love these General Altimax Arctics I put on the Evo. On ice, they rock. In slush, they rock. In snow, they rock! On the dry, they are a tad bit marshmellowy, but once I got them inflated properly I am happy to say that they have been decent in the 1 or 2 dry days we've had since I put them on, LOL! These things almost grip too much, I can't wait to do some actual deep snow plowing action with them. The 2-4" snowfalls we've had so far have proven to be childsplay for these suckers. If you're reading this and you don't drive your car in the winter (your FUN car), you are MISSING OUT! |

I'm happy to report that my car has been sideways at least once every day for the last 2 weeks. Hahaha I need snow tires though, almost went off the road on the way to work this morning.

Re: Cold weather issues?
Heated garage + 1000amp battery + AWD + snow tires = no winter issues. ;)
I hate getting my Eclipse exposed to all that salt for the winter. But I have to drive something for winter. Anyone who thinks that the salt isn't that bad for there car is seriously delusional. In the Fall I go through and wax everything, including the engine bay, door jams, etc. But that salt is still eating away at the underside. Heck, last Saturday I washed it in the garage and hosed off the underside really good. But its still an uphill battle. later, Curt |

RPMs don't matter. Putting power to them does.

Re: Cold weather issues?
Got in a little fender bender. My buddy was driving his 89 celica gt, we were heading down 35w, and traffic went from 40mph, to a dead stop. Unfortunately we couldn't stop in time, and hit a SUV. Luckily enough he hit it just right to take out a flip-up headlight and kink the hood up. The SUV had 3 scatches on the bumper, so the guy didn't care. He barely noticed that we hit him...haha.

Making power doesn't mean its gonna break all the time but its a good excuse. I put the rolla on the shoulder at the bottom of the valley view to 494N ramp today, luckily 3 people stopped within 3 mins and push it of 2 ft. of snow. |
Re: Cold weather issues?

Re: Cold weather issues?
Ahh that sucks man :( What kind of tires do you have on there? I forget.
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
pretty sure they are falkans
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
That sucks man :( Evo8 rims are cheap if you can find them! I've been there though, replaced one of mine already.
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
Sorry to hear. What about those BBS's that are up for sale?
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
My car doesnt start when its really cold! Because I don't turn the key lol :) It's sleeping!
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
That sucks Mark!! it didn't fuck up anything else, did it?
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
released my e brake today the light stayed on, went away next start up. Also noise coming from tranny only when cold, is this normal? Sorry to here about the rim hope you get it fixed or a new set.
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
evo 8 rims are not to bad priced but I would still have to get tires. I cant fit anything bigger than a 215 on the car.
I would never pay what people want for oem bbs's that is just stupied imop the car still goes straight by it self and it look all ok so far |
Re: Cold weather issues?
The only cold weather issue I've had personally, is nearly getting frostbite from -9 degree sledding, with only boxers, a hat, and boots on...haha totally worth $50 my friends bet me and the cuddling with the ladies for warmth afterwards. Overall, probably wasnt the greatest idea...haha.

Re: Cold weather issues?
I drove up north this weekend with my evo fully loaded with dudes and beer and all our shit. Saturday weather was shytastic, snowed all day and night, sunday was clear and roads were icy and snowy until we got most of the way back. The car performed spectacularly! The new snow tires *really* proved themselves this weekend, and this is the first road trip I've been on since doing my headgasket about a month (2000 miles) ago.
I had to keep de-icing the car as we went along, there was SO MUCH crap on the car it was crazy! I had a solid 1.5" of ice on my entire FMIC, all wheel wells were filled and iced, and about 4-5" thick of ice/snow on the entire back of the car. Also got to test out E85 on the road, and it was fine. Hit 2 different stations, price at one place was way high, but it performed fine. Got about 18mpg average the whole trip. |
Re: Cold weather issues?
Your snow tires really amazed me!
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
My car has been doing good other than the brakes which should hopefully be taken care of today. Did a Fuel Lab FPR install yesterday and swapped my cruise control shit out and put in a just a cable and car is a lot more responsive and likes to idle better. Now just needs a good tune :)

Snow tires make a huge difference on any car. My summit has already done some hill climbing this winter through snow drifts higher than the hood :D |
Re: Cold weather issues?
My cold weather issues consist of a cat crawling through a window in my talon and sleeping on my passenger seat. Paw prints, dirt, and leaves everywhere. I had the window rolled down when I pulled the engine and haven't had a chance to get the ECu back in to roll it up or anything. The garbage bag is now keeping the cat out though. There was thankfully no pee or poop.
After seeing those altimax' on scheides evo, I think I'll be purchasing a set for next winter. They look fuggin' mean! Function and fashion! |
Re: Cold weather issues?
The only issue I've had has been the shitty plowing job they've done this year.
Getting onto 494 last night, my back end was still trying to kick out under throttle at the bottom of the ramp at 70mph. |
Re: Cold weather issues?
^^ Well if you're already going 70, why are you on the gas when the roads are shitty?
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
Lol
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
Because I normally go 80 on 494?
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
So you even go 80 when the roads are shitty? Someone is a bright one... ;)
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
yeah pretty much^^^
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
lol. He's got AWD dudes, come on. lol
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
AWD does not equal AW-stop.......
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
^^ Truff!
|
Re: Cold weather issues?
Did I ever say I went 80 that specific time? I slowed down at that point. I was expecting the highway to be better. Considering the fact that the side roads were shit, I figured the plows had been working on the highway... but it's apparent now that the city just hasn't been sending them out at all.
Mark definitely overdrove the conditions on inappropriate tires, damaged his wheels, and got sympathy. I hypothetically overdrove the conditions, kept my car under control, and took shit for it. Go fucking figure. |
