Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
gasoline cleans them up
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I haven't pulled my injectors yet, but I HOPE to be cleaning the fuel filter out at work tomorrow..we shall see.
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
just gonna add this in quick, i bought some injectors used for e-85, and got that gunk build up, cleaned them the best i could with cotten swaps and some cleaner, they came out ok, but i ran gas through them for a little while now there spotless
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I won't have gas going through mine at all..not going back, nor do I even have a tune for it. So, now can I pull them, clean them, then put back?
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
well its just an option, you could pull them, clean them the best you can, and soak the tips in gasoline for a bit, should work out i would think, i dont know what it is specificaly that actualy causes gas to clean them though.

Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I degreed my BC 280's, it was a bitch but I seem to pull 2-4 more inches of vacuum at idle, than anyone else. Powerband seems to start around 4000-4200 rpm.
The fact that anyone advertises cams as drop in, is a farse. Quote:

Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
My PTE1200's were covered in that black tar resin shit. They had about 12K miles on them pretty much always using Holiday E85.
A couple of minutes with carb cleaner and a pick and they cleaned up nice. |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Have any of you guys run seafoam though the car(or other fuel injector cleaner) on a semi regular basis? Wondering if the people not getting the build up may be using something that cleans it up, and those that are getting it don't use a cleaner.
I havn't been running said injectors, but i had some 550cc RC injectors running E-85 all last year. Mine were spotless but i switched them out to run gas this summer on 450cc injectors due to idle issues. Will be going back soon i think, but now worried about this black goo. |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I had 45,000 miles of only E85 and almost 3 yrs on my PTE 1000cc injectors and only two of the injectors had very small trace amounts of black gunk, the other two were perfrect. A cotton swap and small amount of carb cleaner removed it almost instantly. I'll have to pull my FIC bluemax 1250cc injectors at the end of the summer to see if they have anything.
I mainly fill up Holiday on Foley in CR or Holiday on 96 and 35W. |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Mine were clogged so bad they didn't squirt fuel and two cylinders didn't even run. Soaked the tips in maybe 1/2 oz gasoline in a plastic cup and the gas was black within 20 minutes, got new gas for a few minutes and came out clean, the tips were like brand new.
I wouldn't take the time with carb cleaner and a swab, just let them sit for a few minutes in gas. |

Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Careful to just soak the tips. I accidentally had a bit too much gas and the bluemax paint started peeling off the sides of the injectors :(

I guess it's more prevalent with the 1200's |

^^Oh sweet, so glad I got some now lol

Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Me too

Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I've yet to find any black goop on mine. I don't do anything special like run Seafoam or anything. I've just been lucky so far I figure.

Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I have a set of Deatschwerks 1600's I got from AMS and put almost 250 miles on them and all were clogged up with the black tar like substance, so I'm guessing it had nothing to do with the injector itself, but the E85 that I put in the car.
One of the cylinders was lean as hell, piston, valves and spark plug were pure white. As far as cleaning them I just used a can of electronics cleaner, one quick spray and all was like new again. |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I soaked the tips in gasoline, and literally within like 10 mins they were clean. I guess us E85 guys might need to run a tank of regular 92 once every few months?
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
That's what a lot of the link guys have said. Just run the tank really low, put in a few gallons of regular, then back to e85.

Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Wow, I am glad I found this thread. I am running a set of 1150 FIC on E85 and haven't pulled the injectors yet. I didn't even know there was an issue... My car is running fine.
Is it still OK to run them on E85? What are the issues that they are having running them? besides the black junk which sounds fuel related. I guess I better pull them to make sure that they are looking Ok |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I pulled some 1200s out a car recently and it had the black goo bad. My wifes 1600s with a lot of miles on them with E85 were perfectly clean. I usually get E85 from the Holiday off of 252 and 694.

Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Ok Here are the pictures of what I found
I have the 1150cc FIC injectors and really I don't have that many miles on them and this is kind of weird... http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...g?t=1250125209 http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...g?t=1250125212 http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...g?t=1250125222 So number 1 and 2 are just fine but 3 and 4 are gummed up? I don't understand. And did we figure out what this stuff is anyway? Going to try to clean the injectors with a little gas http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...g?t=1250125226 So this is making me want to switch back over to premium fuel now. Unless there is an injector that works with E85 and doesn't gum up. I am wondering if this is why I am having starting issues right now. The tops to the injectors look fine so there is no black gum going through the injector on the fuel rail side. I wonder how my AFPR is looking right now though... |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Thats messed up dude. There had to be a chunk of dino tar stuck in the rail or something. I would send that pic to FIC and see what they say. Maybe take the rail off and shine a light down it to see whats lurking in there.
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I have seen worse and it didn't effect the car at all, it probably going to cause funky idling when there isn't much fuel flowing. At higher loads with a lot coming out at 40psi it is probably going to cut right through that gunk. I also have seen it more pronouced on the injectors closest to the FPR.
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
It would be interesting to send some of that gunk to a chemist or something to see what exactly it is.
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Black tar heroin.
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
LOL, nice. mitsu's on the street making back all the money they take.
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
A chemist on the Link forums already analized it!
I guess it's crap left over from using Diesel fuel tanks as e85 tanks. Just use a little gasoline once and awhile and all should be fine. |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?

On this it is more pronounced closest to the fuel filter and least closest to the FPR. Who knows... There is nothing in the fuel rail itself. Everything there looks clean. Also the top of the injectors look clean. I am going to change my Fuel Filter anyway again just to make sure and we will see what happens. I need to buy one of those E85 sensor so I can hook it up and drive whatever ratio I want. That way I can run a full tank of regular and clean this out every once in a while. BTW, cleaned right up with fuel and popped them back in and everything is good. |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I'm real curious to see what my 1250 FIC injectors look like now after running them for a few thousand miles. Previously I ran PTE 1000cc injectors for almost three years and 45K miles on E85 and didn't have any sticky looking black gunk, I only had very vey small carbon like deposit on two of the PTE injectors.
99% of the E85 I get is from a couple different Holiday's (Coon Rapids and Shoreview) |
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
Carbureted race engines get this goo in the intake manifold runners. I never really looked down in the intake of my racecar to inspect anything, but I recently asked my engine builder and he said he's seen it before. The fuel is always bought in a drum and then mixed with gas to get a consistent mixture you can't get at the pump, usually premium fuel is what's added. I don't know if he has anyone running E98, never asked him, to see if it's the same with that. He also has engines running less than 85% ethanol, I should ask him if he's seen the goo in them at all.
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I've been getting the goo on cylinders 2 and 3 but not 1 and 4 for some reason (1150 FIC). I really tired of pulling the fuel rail every couple of months.. So PTE is the way to go? Sounds like there's still some issues with the Bluemax ones? Or is it just something you have to deal with e85. Can anybody confirm that running regular gas through will clean them out for sure?
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
This should be stickied since E85 is MN pump gas.

Saying it in a sense that E85 is very common around here.
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
I have the PTE 1000's and have been running E85 for 6000 miles. Mine look great!
|
Re: E85 Injector Issues... Anyone?
The PTE-1000's I have have been perfectly clean the 3 times I've looked at them.
My RC750's have been very gooped up both times, and the second time was only after like a couple months and a couple thousand miles. Two were nearly plugged and two didn't have much on them. Needless to say, I'm now going to keep the PTE's in my car. I had some PTE-680's before, and I think I remember a little goo on them after about a year, but not enough to even care about cleaning it off. I wonder if certain spray patterns allow the goop to build up, and other patterns just blow it away. Either way, if you look down in your intake ports you'll most likely see the goo in there. |
