Re: team ab drag race and street builds
never considered ron before to be honest. may be worth a call. Yes we did the powder coating ourselves. tools for trans rebuild? I would absolutely consider doing my own rebuild if I had more knowledge of it or at least more write ups or vids to do the research.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
wow those coated parts look awesome
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
The trans is pretty easy as long as you have a press and a nice "seperator plate" thing. Also, you'll need a few specialty tools like a 36mm socket. I believe the interwebs has a detailed trans guide somewhere.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Rick Shindley from Big Lake can rebuild your DSM tranny. Oh, wait this isn't 2004.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
If you're considering rebuilding your trans, here are the resources I found useful.
Service Manual: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/freq...e-manuals.html TMZ preload specs: http://www.galantvr4.org/ubbthreads/...25&Main=862594 Jack's bronze synchro rings: http://www.jackstransmissions.com/pages/mits-parts |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
^ yup old news to me, but thanks. I'm saying until I know I could trust myself i'm not chancing my first rebuild on a car with as much power as i'll be throwing at it. I'd rather spend the money to have a pro do this for now and be money ahead. If a reputable person was willing to let me sit in on a session hell yeah i'd be into that for sure. I have 3 motors to build and install into cars not to mention tuning etc. I just don't think I have enough information for the way my brain works to have serious thoughts of doing it myself yet. I do appreciate the comments and effort from all so far.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
If you can spec out and assemble a motor you'll find the trans is cake. Just crack one open and disassemble it you will find it's very simple.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
I've always been under the impression the trans is much more difficult to master or more people would be doing it. That's why I assumed most people with wild builds use a reputable trans shop

I always thought it was a big deal because it requires a press. I bought the one in the pic for around $170 with coupon at Harbor Freight. It worked great.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Edit no worries here we will see how funding goes. Project list is long at this point. Trans, clutch, injectors, boston hatcher, wheels tires, maybe turbo upgrade. Kiggly crank sensor, 3 inch intercooler piping for cold side, q45 tb, timing belt, etc etc

Can't get much better powder coat yesterday, New cams today. I can't wait to try these s3 out
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Damn, that's a lot of cam lift on a DSM.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
^ gonna be sick high lift, high compression, and boost.
Didn't really take any pics, but it was a crazy weekend for me. I specked out andre and jessie's short blocks out, ended up being three blocks in total. Jessie needs and 6 bolt crank, and a rod. andre needs a seven bolt crank, and a rod. The other 6 bolt is good to go for a refresh and kingly main girdle. Also if anyone has info on how to shave the rods to create more side clearance on the crank I wouldn't mind hearing opinions |

and some more powder coating, you know just incase they don't move they will still look pretty
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Looks great where are you doing this powdercoating at?
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
in the garage
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
ok i have my trans torn down. I can tell the gear on the fort shaft that connects to the forward gear is toasted as parts or the gear are missing, so that is $185 from jacks. What I don't know is how to inspect the syncros, hubs, forks.. The rest of the gears are all pretty good looking. I was grinding 2nd and 3rd like it was religion on sunday so I know there is a problem
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Synchros should have a sharp point on them. If they are rounded over then you should change them.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Replace all synchros while in there, they are cheap. Double synchros are a little more I think $67. Also inspect both hub/sliders for wear but I would just replace them too.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Oh haha sorry evo tuner didn't know if u were being a dick and gonna say better not be doing in the house or something. It's really easy, parts need to be stripped and clean, buy the Eastwood powder gun and powder, put parts on an over rack attach the grounding cable to that, spray on powder and place in the preheated oven at 450, check parts every five min or so until all the parts look wet. Turn oven to 400 for 20 min, then turn oven off and open the door and let the parts cool slowly. That's it. Not really too much of a learning curve until you are multi coating
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Hmm sounds pretty easy, have any pics of your setup? If youre okay with sharing it.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
It's an oven and the nice Eastwood gun, air compressor and that's it. Not much to show
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Oh haha I was thinking a special oven lol DERPPPPPP
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Lol electric oven that's it
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Sounds like the same setup I used to have. Eastwood hobby gun, free oven off craigslist and a toaster oven from the thrift shop for smaller parts. Air compressor and an inline water filter. Worked decent enough, but I got rid of it all after realising how much of a mess it made in my garage. There is still pink powder in there from Mark's valve covers to this day :) lol

Anyone have the trans bearing and gear removal tool I can borrow? I am ready to start tearing down for syncros hub sliders a new shift fork and whatever else I'll need
Lol halon so far the mess is worth it. The prep is the only crap part of it imo |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Yeah, if you don't mind the mess it's all good. I did it for a few years, and finally just got to the point that I decided I was done with it. Everything in my garage had a layer of "dust" on it haha.
Prep definitly sucked too. I did chemical stripping which gets to messy and old real quick. And when that failed, I'd have to resort to finding someone with a blaster or have it blasted at work. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Yup sounds about right. Anyone have that tool?
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
what sort of tool? like dis?
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/i...7h-HnpNDQnC2-Q i use one of those and a shop press. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
yeah tried one that looks like that and failed on the first bearing i used it on. the clearances are so tight between the bearings and gears
|

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
oh lol ok that helps but I tried to get the end bearings so how do i get those? also what gear do i press from?
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
There is a tranny rebuild how to on vfaq
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
unless you see something i don't mark i see dre's build and it tells nothing about how and where to press. also my service manual conveniently skips that part also. why don't those who this is easy for just illustrate a dummy pic or tutorial for me instead of posting on this project thread how to search around the internet for answers? please if all you have to say is search around and believe me I have than don't waste a post as someone with a better answer may miss this...
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Lmfao VFAQs has a pic by pic write up....
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
of pressing gears off? don't see it
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Go to 2g manual trans rebuild it's on the 4th or 5th pages. It shows assembly but you can figure it out from there.
http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
So does the 1g tranny rebuild. Comes apart the same way.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Oh now I get it I mean I said I've looked at it plenty and have the manual in front of my face and tried telling you guys it's not there but for the sake of you guys giving me the it's on vfaq 16 more times I get it haha. I'll call Tim again today
Sorry for being a dick on here it's just frustrating knowing I read dres build and I have the service manual and dre literally got two new shafts instead of pressing those bearings off idk |
