Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Well just found out that the car doesn't have heat (he said it did before but said shane bent the pipe at the firewall when installing the motor. The owner didn't care so he said by pass it.
Well now he said I'd have to basically buy a donor car if I wanted it. As he thinks the heater core leaks. and he had the water pipe welded and the t-house welded. He also said its a good thing I started asking him questions about it because he'd forgotten all about it. And in the current setup I can not run water cooled turbos if I ever upgraded. So this now created several questions. this car is going to be driven 1/2 the time at night. Where in will need a defogger/defrosted for colder days as I don't get off work till midnight and home around 1am. He says the a/c works just no heat. What part is needed to defog the windows? Im sure to de ice the windows the heater is needed. Also from the videos he took today i noticed there wasn't any windshield washer prayers and the srs light is on. He said he removed all the sprayer parts front and back. And there was nothing to attach the airbag to when he took the aftermarket wheel off and put the stock one back on. I know there is a white ring or something that is usually there for the airbag to plug into. I removed this as well when I put my sparco wheel in my old car. Any ideas how much im looking at to put heat back in this thing? |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Also how is the non water cooled turbos situation going to effect me.
if I ever upgraded turbos I was considering the pte 6266 or there 6766 turbos with bb. One just came up on tuners today bnib for $700 if I didn't need all this extra money now I'd be tempted to buy it |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
You can get a heater core, an unmodified water pipe and t-stat housing for less than $20 each. And you can find them very easily it's no big deal.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Yeah, no way you need a donor car for those minor things. The idle looks pretty rich, I saw it getting down to 12 or so, then it would miss.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Thanks for the better news. I figured if I will do the dash swap at the same time.
How hard is it to install all that stuff? About how many hrs in labor? I have never removed a dash or done any work other then replacing an each and clutch stuff before. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Replace Ecu ( Damon phone) and clutch work under the dash
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
My honest opinion: Run away. If the owner is "forgetting" things, doesn't know specifics, etc. who knows what else he's leaving out for you to discover down the road.
This sounds to me like someones half-assed hacked up "project" car. Buy a nice clean example, yes, they're out there, and start fresh (DSM or Evo). Get the maintenance up to date THEN mod it how you want it modded. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Or buy a c7.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Here are three clean stock examples, all manual tranmission, all under 100k miles, all under $9k:
black 1997 GSX: http://tinyurl.com/nwgjrpk red 1999 GST: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mitsubishi-E...US_Cars_Trucks maroon 1997 GST Sypder: http://tinyurl.com/ohcdgnp I found these three doing a quick 5 minutes of searching on only Autotrader and eBay. I'm sure far more of various colors can be found if you put more time into it. |

Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Not looking for stock, car has to pretty much be a pre assembled car. Might need minor things but that's it.
Three kids and a 7 day a week job working evenings with only 1 day off every other week which I always choose to spend with my kids. Doesnt leave much time to mod a car and the point of this car is to stop paying the rediculous labor costs down here that people charge to work on cars. Flights paid for so im at least going to fly out and take a look at it. And will be negotiating the price down. Accordingly. I found the parts already to put the heat back in. As well as the wiper system. all cheap like you guys mentioned it just a matter or time to install it as per mentioned above time is limited. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
...also leaves you no time to fix someone else's wreck.
Just stating my opinion and playing a little bit of the Devil's advocate. I obviously wish you the best and hope it all works out! |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Yep dont understand why youd want that mess, if you dont even have time to tinker with it. Its a dsm, it will break.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I seems like you already have your mind made up about the car. I encourage you to take a step back and mentally prepare yourself to walk away if need be. Its easy to get tunnel vision on a car. It's even easier when its a car that really can toss you back into the seat. I've bought 2 cars while in this "tunnel vision" mode (both dsms). I got fucked both times .Krackas made some good points, listen to him. I hope you get there and the cars amazing, but prepare yourself to cut your losses and go home car-less.

Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I do understand all sides. if i get there and decide the car isnt worth the money then I have no problems walking away.
As far as breaking goes... well one thing i've learned there is no such thing as a reliable car. And cars break more so based on how you treat them has been my experience. The rest just is wear and tear. I just know how to work on dsm's more then others cars and they are cheaper to fix. If I get there and this isnt the one then so be it. Search will go on if need be. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I agree That it does sound bad that the owner is forgetting things' and to be prepaired to walk away. I drove to Chicago to buy my 2G. It was suposed to be "rust free" and was owned buy a pretty well known reputable guy on the dsmlink forums. IF it was a local car I would have walked away. But since we already made the trip I brought it home. I have had to redo alot of wireing and will be fixing strut tower rust while my engine is out. Goog luck I hope everthing works out for you but I think you should prepare for the worst.

Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Ya im not set on the car, im just not ruling it out yet is all. Flights paid for so im at least going to see it.
Worste case the car isnt worth the money. Or what not I get a flight out and while im waiting. There is a yt? Supra for sale I've been wanting to see that in wpb. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Amd I hear ya on the no rust thing.
Was going to look at an eclipse in atlanta ga. 1997 gsx charcoal color but plastidipped black. Built 2.4, 280cams, full v3 with sd, t4 manifold, Garrett 4088r turbo, sheep stage 3, Vrsf, tial bov, tial 44wg, etc. - price was $7000 called me the other day said he'd take $5500 When I asked him about rust he said rust free. Sent me pictures there was rust all over the passenger side strut tower. When I asked him about ot he said its only surface rust. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Talked with the owner tonight said he'd cover the cost of the parts. And my gas to go get them in nc.
Comes off the price of the car at time of purchase |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Sure seems eager to get rid of it. Take an extra good look
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Lol he wasn't eager to lower the price. Took some convincing.
And personally I think if in hadn't paid tp have it dyno'd and already bought my plane ticket he would have walked away from the sale. Anyrate still plan to walk away and if so there's one that came up in Georgia again so I might just swing by of this one falls through and check it out. Anyone have any recommendations for a car cover for an eclipse, maybe dual purpose to cover the x5 when im driving what ever new car I get? Car will be kept outside till I can clear out all the crap in my garage that the wife's been accumulating for her photography stuff |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
well got back from my trip then headed straight to my moms with the family at the beach.
Got down there and car ran and shifted great, car was rust free like advertised had a blast test driving the car for 40min all over wpb. Noticed it needed tuning or something at under 10% throttle (basically when you try to maintain a speed under 80 mph) it would hickup occassionally not sure if its due to large injectors or what but only happens at low throttle. But overall the car was in a lot rougher condition then i expected as far as exterior and interior goes. There was maybe 3 plastic pieces usable in the interior, rest are scratched or cut up in some way shape or form or not to the standard i want. And the Exterior like advertised needed to be painted (but didn't look like the whole car was done in rustoleum in picts, decent job painting just not like the oem shine or what not that i was thinking it had) positive note the car had an double din touchscreen generic dvd player and upgraded sound which he didnt list. (you could see the double din but we never discussed the stereo) but works fantastic and sounds great he also showed me it had new starter, alternator, PS pump, and axles, (over the last 2 years, looked over his reciepts) So after explaining to him my issues / concerns and basically saying take me back to the airport, he went to talk to his wife, i stepped outside and called my wife to let her know it looks like i'll be flying home. He came outside and agreed to the price i was willing to pay for the car as it is. So got home from the 10.5hr drive in the new project car. Which that is a testimate in itself in my book. Many of you know my old eclipse always had a hard time making it to rockfalls with out breaking down and never once was able to make it to BIR. So originally i was thinking quick paint job. But will probably do a full on motor out paint job next tax season. And the interior is going to be completely swapped out, and am going to shoot for full black interior. Those things I plan to do first and foremost unless something mechanical comes up that takes priority, but no upgrades etc till that's done. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Nice, good luck with it Brian!

Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I spent most of last night reading tech articles of v3. As speed density is completely new to me and so is the boost control. I went ahead and bought myself a laptop as well last night (was going to use my wife's work laptop when I needed to, but even last night I had to wait three hours to use it because she was editing photos)
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Congrats on the new purchase, but if you had troubles driving to RFR or BIR, I'd say don't mod it too much.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
lol ya my old car just had awful bad luck when i wanted to take it to a track or road trip. Seemed something always broke the day of or just before hand.
Blew a turbo once 5 miles from Bir doing pulls against swanny's stealth. Tried to drive it to the shoot out one year, was going to leave after work and found an oil leak under the car as i was walking out to the car to leave. Just to name a few fun times lol. Back then although I always paid to have most of the work done and tuned. That car was beat on every single day, everywhere it was driven which is why it broke so much. its just the nature of the game when you drive a car as hard as I was back then. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Congrats. Get some pics up of it.

Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
here are some logs from taking my son out for a ride (hes officially an adrenaline junky. All he wanted to do was go faster. Even asked me to go get his "racing seat"...carseat. so we could stop idling around my neighborhood lol.
I wouldnt do more then 1-2sec pulls with him in the car but definetely needs to be tuned for SC weather vs florida. It's really rich on decel/zero throttle as it must shoot flames. and there is still a hesitation when I first depress the gas and at partial throttle while trying to maintain speed. please let me know what you think, what needs to be changed etc. (will edit with files once i figure out how to upload them lol) edit - well here is the link on ecmlink forums of my logs since I cant upload here http://www.ecmtuning.com/forums/show...246#post650246 |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Huge injectors on pump gas will hesitate on partial throttle cruising. No way around it unless you get smaller injectors. Congrats on the purchase.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
What injectors does it have?
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
2200cc.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
if i were to downgrade injectors what would be a good 93 oct injector.
My guess is 2yrs till i go with turbo upgrade unless a black turbo or something comes up for sale that bolts up to the fp manifold and punishment 02. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
also anyone understand how the boost control via link works? everything on this car as far as management goes is taken straight off ecmlinks website/parts list.
before ever looking at how it works i was thinking it would just be as simple putting in the boost you wanted for each rpm range, but thats not the case lol and the numbers aren't making sense to me as to how its calculated. cars only running 17psi right now and was tuned for 22psi would like to get it back to 22psi. |

Just type in your power goals and it'll spit out an estimate of what you'd need. Sometimes it's nice to oversize your setup to support more power in the future, but with injectors you have to remember that generally with larger injectors comes increased risk of idle/low throttle issues. So if in 5 years you think you'll be at 700hp, but for now you're at 400, I'd probably get injectors more suited for the 400hp you're at now rather than hugely oversized ones for possibly 5 years down the road. If you don't need huge ones, the FIC high-z 900-1000 injectors worked extremely well for me on my SC300. Otherwise I'd just talk to your tuner because in the end he's the one that's going to have to deal with tuning around your injector choice. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
what tuner lol, I now live in a small towns whose primary business is farming pine trees for paper mills.
but ya I was thinking the same thing. I was going to possibly upgrade turbos this tax season but I want the car to look up to par first. And figure paint, and interior would probably already take up my half of the taxes next year. thanks for the link, i had rc 550's in my old car and never had any problems. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I suppose you could just keep those 2200's around in case you need some huge ones for the future if you ever plan on making 600+ or something. And in the mean time with an HX35, you could grab some affordable 650 - 750 sized injectors that should be plenty when talking pump gas power levels, and will likely make daily driving much more comfortable than the 2200's.

If your logging a map sensor and you have a good base duty cycle chart setup already then you can enable the error correction feature which is pretty cool. But I just use the base duty cycle chart. http://www.ecmtuning.com/wiki/bcssetup?s[]=boost&s[]=wgs |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I was thinking the same. So long as nothing comes up my next day off ill be heading to north carolina to pick up basically full interior for the car and then ill be painting interior based on the write up on tuners.
Since they didnt make a full black interior and I have to paint parts anyways I am leaning towards just buying all grey as its half the price as black pieces. then painting all of it that way its not two tone blacks. Ill be having the roof liner and sunroof slider done in black as well just have to get the local guy to go me a date he can do and fix the liner in the 740 |
