Just giving you crap! Everyone gets so stuck on ballistics now that the 30-30 looks horrible. It still gets the job done. The .30-06 is an awesome round though.

Re: The Gun Thread

My brother has pretty much every caliber Ruger M77 action'd rifle ever produced. I believe he was hooked on the easily adjustable trigger and the integrated scope mounts, which was a big deal back in the late 60's when he bought his first M77 in .243...before he was even old enough to legally buy a rifle. Then again, this is the same guy who got kicked out of the Boy Scouts for shooting squirrels out of trees with a .22 pistol while on a canoe trip. It must run in the family. Anyway, he recently took his .257 Roberts to a professional gun builder in Houston to have it gone through from top to bottom. The guy worked the gun over pretty well, even made everything metal into a matte black finish, camo'd the stock and built some custom loads. I'm not sure how much he spent on the whole thing but I'm sure it wasn't cheap judging the price of the new target grade Leupold scope sitting on top of it. I have never seen a rifle shoot like that one. Previous to the gun smith work, that rifle would shoot 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" on a good day. I've killed deer, hogs, etc., with it in brush country. If we were hunting open range I would just leave it at home or plan on crawling on my belly for a close shot. Basically, it just sucked. After the smith work his wife put the first six rounds into the same hole at 100 yards.

I have been looking for a Ruger Red Label over/under with 26" barrels for a while. We have a gun show pretty much every week in Houston. It's good to be home. :D

On paper the 30-30 has similar ballistics as a medium sized rock thrown by a girl in junior high. I've read several articles that suggest the Winchester Model 94 30-30 has killed more animals than all other calibers combined. I tend to believe it. For a dense brush gun it's hard to beat a Trapper in 30-30. Personally, I've always been partial to anything with a .308 parent case. Ok, I'm just partial to anything that goes *BOOM!*.

The new Toy

http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Images/photo_917vr.jpg

It's a Marlin 917VR chambered in .17HMR with a heavy barrel. I also installed a 3x9x40 Bushnell rimfire scope.

The .17 HMR is a very fun round with a decently flat trajectory up to 150ish yards. The bullet is plastic tipped and the size of a .177 pellet stuffed in a necked down .22 Magnum cartridge.

Plus this brand from Hornaday has the same name as my motorcycle ;)

Just make sure there isn't much wind, that round is really affected by it because they are so light. Other than that, it is a really fun round. With the speed it turns small birds into a puff of feathers :D Looks nice!

Yeah, luckily the max range I'll be shooting it is around 100 yards and in deep forrest so wind won't be much of a problem. Besides, if it's too windy I'll just hit them wabbits with the .223 or possibly the .308 if I really want to make a mess.

Anyone here know much about handguns? I am looking at the Glock 17 for my first gun and want some people's opinions.

Personally I wouldn't get a Glock. There are some nice cheaper guns for the money.

Re: The Gun Thread

I'm not necessarily looking for a "cheap gun", but something that ammo will be cheaper for so I can afford to shoot it. The Glock is a 9mm so it won't be that bad and from what I hear, is pretty easy to start off with compared to .45, etc.

Yeah the glock is a little expensive. However it is one of the best hand guns on the market. It will fire under water. Almost never jams. Christ you can pour sand down the barrel and as long as you dump it out the think will still fire! I am actually looking at getting that same gun. Just make sure it isn't a 17 C. For a first gun that is no good.

I did some research on what my first gun should be. I came to the conclusion that the Smith & Wesson Sigma was a good choice. It's design is just like the Glock. The gun is also known as a SWock, and S & W paid for infringements. Mine is the .40 cal, but you can get them in the 9mm variety as well. My second gun was a Remington 710. The cartridge I went with was the .300 Win. Mag. I actually haven't broken it in yet, but it should be fun gun to shoot. Both were fairly cheap. With the ammo, each gun was about $400 a piece. The next gun on my list is an M4.

A buddy of mine is a pretty big gun buff and bought a .40 Sigma about 8 years ago. He didn't like it much and sold it. He NEVER sells a gun, so that is saying something. He got a Taurus after that and loved it.

Very nice! I haven't found a Beretta that didn't shoot well. They have a great feel to them.

Re: The Gun Thread

Yeah, I used to own a Beretta 92 in 9mm and loved it.

I went there originaly to buy a Magnum Research composite subcompact in .40 to replace my High Power as my carry gun but didn't like the way it fit my hand. (hard to reach safety and slide release without using other hand) It's a shame too because I love the way my baby eagle .40 shoots and feels.

I also checked out the S&W/HK/Sig/Glock/Taurus/etc and found the PX4 to be the best fit.

Any reason in particular? I'm guessing it was the pull of the trigger.

The gun feels great and I couldn't be happier with it. I haven't done the modification, but one day I'll get the reduced striker spring and ride off into the sunset.

He got quite a few jams with it, he also didn't like the feel much. He said it felt too cheap. I didn't shoot it, so I am just going by what he said. He is a huge gun nut though, he had all the magazines at work, thought the New World Order was taking over, etc. At the time he had about 30 guns, so I was shocked that he sold one. I am not sure if they have made changes to it since then either.

I shot my first guns ever the other day, and will perhaps be back out to shoot again this sat! I want one now! I've been keeping my eye out for a beretta 92. Don't know why, but I really like those guns. the glock/hk/browning s+w I was shooting were sure fun though! The 500 came out, and that jsut hurt my hand.

I haven't experienced any jams at all. The gun does seem cheap, but that's because everything but the slide and the trigger is made out of plastic. I do know that they have made a change since first coming out - do to the infringement. I believe it was in the trigger assembly, but I'm not certain. If I had the money, I would have gone with a 1911 instead.

Could you narrow it down a bit? Pistol or rifle? What will it be used for? How much do you want to spend...I know DSMers are cheap, but how cheap do you "have" to go?

Re: The Gun Thread

Well I'm sure there are a great many answers to your question but this is where I'd start: Go get your permit. Go look at SIGs. The SIG 225 or 226 are great choices. If you want a 1911 (Classic .45) then I'd say go with a Rock Island. Buy something and take a beginer class at your local range. Take time to really learn what you are doing and how your gun works. I personally get alot more out of rifle shooting, but that can become a bit more costly quickly.

Got a dumb question, how can Bill's have automatic weapons? Is because they are old, or do you need a special permit? I've been contemplating shooting one just for fun!

Re: The Gun Thread

They sell to law enforcement and also it is easier to get a permit for a dealer demo full-auto because if the weapon is a dealer demo it can never be sold to the public.
