Re: Project Lex
It all worked out fine, it was a little tougher to manuever over the plywood lip but not a big deal.
Fram, yeah yeah... don't have a good excuse for that one. |
Re: Project Lex
Nice work.

Trans off, motor on the stand. That's how she'll remain until we come back!

Re: Project Lex
I know I'm way past a day late and a dollar short, but I just discovered this truck bedlining/underbody coating stuff.
It's available with colors too, and you can even do your garage floors. Match the bean! http://www.monstaliner.com/monstaliner_pricing.htm |

Ha nice man. Too late though, just gunna rock it how it is at this point.
Got home and had a couple packages waiting for me. Engine gasket kit: http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...2&d=1358102552 Billet shortenen shifter bracket, to move the shifter more forward to better place the shifter. The shifter will still end up a few inches more back than the stock one was, but this is as short as it can get. So might have to modify the hole in the tunnel, as well as figure out what I'm going to do with the interior trim. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1358102552 Also looks like my new clutch was attempted to be delivered but they delivered it requiring a signature and I've been on my honeymoon :( So hopefully it's still sitting at FedEx tomorrow and I can go get it. And my Rideskinz rear bumper lip is supposed to ship out tomorrow as well :) |
Re: Project Lex
Spoke with Kevin @ Schneider Cams today for about 15 minutes. He helped me decide on a cam profile that he feels will work well with my setup.
Ended up with the following grind: Intake and Exhaust cams: 268 duration, 9.0mm max lift He said to go with the higher lift he'd really end up removing a lot of material, and since I'm going with the longer 268 duration (rather than 264), it should work out well for a street mannered car. Total came to less than $300, including his shipping :) Can't beat that at all, my other option would have been around 450 per cam. He said he expects them to ship out in the next 1-2 days. Hell of a quick turnaround! I'll post pics once I receive them, but so far their customer service, and turn around time has been 2nd to none. |
Re: Project Lex
They must have some small cams stock, if 9.0mm is an upgrade.
|
Re: Project Lex
No idea what the stock measurements are. I'll ask them what they are since I'm pretty sure they measured them when they arrived.
For comparison sake, 9.0 is what the HKS 264's are. The TTC 268's are 9.1". |
Re: Project Lex
I found these numbers on the interwebz for comparison sake, no idea how accurate they are.
2JZ-GE stock cams: Lift = 8.3 / 8.3 Duration = 230 / 230 2JZ-GTE stock cams: Lift = 8.25 / 8.4 Duration = 233 / 236 Schneider Grind I bought: Lift = 9.0 / 9.0 Duration = 268 / 268 |
Re: Project Lex
Here's the numbers Kevin sent me today.
These numbers were pulled directly off of the cams you sent in: Part Number: stock Grind Number: 2JZ-GE Intake Duration (gross): 240 Exhaust Duration (gross): 248 Intake Duration (.050?): 197 Exhaust Duration (.050?): 203 Intake Valve Lift*: 8.5mm Exhaust Valve Lift*: 8.7mm Lobe Separation: 112 Intake Valve Lash: .012" Exhaust Valve Lash: .014" RPM Range: 1000-5000 and here's what we're doing for yours: Part Number: custom Grind Number: 268F Intake Duration (gross): 268 Exhaust Duration (gross): 268 Intake Duration (.050?): 226 Exhaust Duration (.050?): 226 Intake Valve Lift*: 9mm Exhaust Valve Lift*: 9mm Lobe Separation: 114 Intake Valve Lash: .012" Exhaust Valve Lash: .014" RPM Range: 2500-6500+ |
Re: Project Lex
Well looks like those guys know their stuff for sure.
I think this seems like a nice option. Just makes me happy though how readily available good cams are for mitsu's. |

Received the correct clutch disc today, finally...
http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1358548205 Also received my new poly rear bumper lip today from Rideskinz. What do ya guys think? http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1358548205 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1358548205 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1358548205 |
Re: Project Lex
WTF at that lip lmfao! Are they serious???? This time ebay has failed you. haha
|
Re: Project Lex
Hahaha, I seriously can't help but laugh right now!
It wasn't ebay, it was a vendor over on Club Lexus who makes these and is doing a group buy. Needless to say, he has an email in his inbox :D |
Re: Project Lex
LOL at lip i'm sorry you were on the victim but thats just fucking stupid.. i hope you get your money back..

I have it sitting in the house now. Looks like now that it's warming up it's starting to flatten out. Still has a little unwanted curvature but might end up being ok.
|
Re: Project Lex
I couldn't help but laugh either. I'm sure they will make it right and your not the only one that recieved it packaged like that.
It does look better though |
Re: Project Lex
One thing you will notice, is that one exhaust hole is cutout, while the other one isn't, but is made to be cutout if you want dual exhaust. I currently have dual, but could convert to single if I wanted. Might have to think about that one...
|
Re: Project Lex
Wow what a way to try and save on shipping. I say go with one pipe.

Re: Project Lex
Considering you want it to be as quiet as possible.. twin mufflers will be the better option for you.
|
Re: Project Lex
Duals are badass, just ask the good 'ol boys in dem saweet pick'em up trucks!
Seriously though I like the look of duals, but less weight of a single is appealing. If quiet is what you want, I'd have to agree with mo. |
Re: Project Lex

Rideskinz wrote back and said that's how they package all poly stuff because it will return to normal shape once it reaches a more normal temperature. Well he was right, the lip is sitting in the room and looks normal! So that's good :)
Went and worked on the motor for a couple hours today. It's taking me awhile since I'm new to this thing. The wire harness is a god aweful mess, but I got it all disconnected and out of the way. Intake and exhaust manifolds are off. Fuel rail off. Valve covers off. Serpentine belt off. So at this point, I guess I need to figure out how the timing belt works and what all it takes to get that thing off. Seems like I'll have to remove a bunch of shit to get the cover off. Then take the cams out, head bolts off, and that should be it I think. Once the head is off I plan on calling up Northern Cylinder Head in Andover to see if they'll go ahead and clean it up, put new valve seals, valve springs, and cams in for me (and shim). Nice little tin shed po-dunk feeling shop that's done a lot of head work for me on my DSM in the past! So that's it for now. here's a couple pics. |
Re: Project Lex
Are you going to need to take off your damper? That thing is a completr beoch and is tq'd to 239ft lbs.
|
Re: Project Lex
Looks good! If you ever want any help let me know since I'm close! Plus I have access to alldata at work and have just about every tool you'd need if you ever need to borrow anything.
|
Re: Project Lex
Electric fan/s in your future?
|
Re: Project Lex
^lol.
What was the leakdown on your old DSM head like? |
Re: Project Lex
I guess I'm assuming I'll have to take the dampener off, but no idea yet.
Thanks for the offer on helping. I'll let ya know if I ever do. I'm kind of a do it myselfer though, just go out there an hour here and an hour there. Electric fan sure would be nice. The stocker is a monster that I'd love to ditch. However I think I'm going to leave it on for now, and it must work pretty well because I never come close to overheating :) |

Re: Project Lex
I'm a bit late, but I guess the King of Ricers needs to speak up.
My JDM bumper was shipped to me bent like a pretzel. Leaving it out where its warm allows it to shape itself into its original form. The picture of it folded up didn't worry me one bit. :) |

Got the head off. I have it all boxed up along with the new BC springs, and new stem seals. Just waiting for the new cams to arrive and then will be delivering it to the shop to get worked.
Engine looks pretty good. Going to try and clean some of the crud off the tops of the pistons. Cleaned of the middle two with a little brake cleaner and paper towel. Will move onto the other 4 another day. |
Re: Project Lex
Mmmm, I want 6 of them! Nice, can't wait to see this back up and running tip top. Good work.

Re: Project Lex

I thought you were a do it yourselfer? Or are you having them do a valve job? |
Re: Project Lex
Having them clean it up. Check to see if anything looks old/worn such as guides and what not. If everything looks good, they will be installing new valve stem seals, the new BC springs, and I will have them shim for the new cams.
I've never done much internal head work (valves, seals, springs), and I don't have the tools for it. So I source that kinda stuff out. |

Think I found my mysterious oil leak. Shouldn't there be more than 1 bolt holding the upper oil pan on?
|
Re: Project Lex
1 out of 4 isn't bad, looks like its cracked on that front side.
|
Re: Project Lex
Wonder how long it has been like that for?
|
Re: Project Lex
Bolts are so over-rated in engines.
