MAP has the head done! I'm on my way back to the US from a business trip in Ireland. Guinness is good stuff! The plan is to get the engine assembled on Monday and drop the engine in Wednesday night. Then hopefully wrap it up and start it Thursday night to load on the trailer. I need to verify the tracking number on the clutch, in case its signature only so I can get it held at ups. That could screw me up.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I got beat by Nate on the first round of eliminations. I figured out that I need to make more boost at the line. It only made 3-4 psi on the 2 step, due to the displacement loss. The goal is to leave at around 15psi, it will make all the difference in the world. The tune is coming along, it went 165mph on a couple of passes. The good news is that the car is 100% and ready for the next event.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

It's going to get real this weekend!

Well it has been a crazy week! Last weekend I went to the Muscle Car Shootout. I wanted to have fun and also get the car ready for the MAP event. My focus was to improve my launch. I knew I needed to make more boost on the line to improve my 60 foot. A special thanks to Nate with the rowdy Civic to light a fire under my ass to get working hard on dialing this thing in. He beat me in eliminations at the last MAP event, and deserved the win! Also, we have a friendly competition to improve our times and performance.
What’s changed since Map 2K15.1? Lots of stuff with the tune, more boost capability, drag style anti-lag, and my seat time to get it all put together!
I lost an elimination round race this last weekend due to a stock front axle breaking. It also took out the output shaft for the rear inside of the transmission. Thanks goes out the John (Pushit 2.0) for helping me out with an extra shaft! A MAJOR shout out to Dan at MAPerformance to help me source a set of 1000hp front DSS axles in time for the 2K15.2 proving grounds weekend!

I have never put power to the ground like this ever! Check this out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wrES3UHDUs

The new axles and 50 psi will make this all crazy town this weekend!!!!!!
Looking forward to seeing you all there!

That sounded messy! lol.

Do you run a certain class at MCSO? I was just thinking I've never seen that event and would like to run in it if I could. (i need slow classes)

Do you foresee any other things getting in your way this upcoming weekend?

Good luck!

Mark is forced to race the Manual transmission class at MCSO. The rules say he needs the car to weigh more to race true street or king street. They changed some of the rules for this year but not enough weight break to race a class to be competitive in. Maybe next year it will be changed so we can both race heads up classes.

In for 170mph time slip

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I had fun at the MAP weekend, unfortunately my car didn't work out as hoped. As for the positives over the weekend, I turned the boost up to 50 psi. The first pass where I drove it off the line with no launch it went 167.49 mph. The addition of 4 psi more boost added 2-3 MPH. I took out 1.5 degrees of timing when I did this to be safe. I had plans on adding a little back in to see if it kept picking up MPH.

Wade completed his license passes, finally! It was an epic rush to get the required passes in on Sunday. He ran 4 passes in about 45mins, requiring a team effort. It was cool to participate and get all the passes in. Pre Celebration:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...912_172225.jpg

The bad:

I learned just how critical a good alignment is. I broke rear support tube to the third member differential last week at the muscle car shootout. I welded it back in place, however it effected the rear alignment. I first noticed it at the track when I unloaded the car. Fail! It made the car go all over the track. I needed to drive the shit out of the car to make a pass.

The ugly:

I launched the car on the first pass Saturday, it bogged a little bit, between the 330 and 1/8 mile my drive shaft U joint broke at around 115 MPH. It beat up the under side of my car, and scared the shit out of me! this was the only original joint in the drivetrain! I looked up failure modes, Spicer had a white paper on failure modes. I appears that grease, torque, and application are a contributing factors for burnt/melted cross points.
The plan is to go to the larger 3000GT driveshaft connection to the rear.

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...912_134230.jpg

It is all correctable and will be better than ever now when it hits the track next time!

That thing was hauling so much ass. Get it back together for the 10-11th at rock falls! Johnnys car might be there if he can keep out of the liquor and get his car buttoned up.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

How about a custom rear section drive shaft? Spicer 2-2-329 flange might work but probably requires drilling new mounting holes for the 3kgt flange bolt pattern. It is a 1310 series joint so it's way stronger than factory dsm u joint. And maybe do a 3" DOM tubing? I haven't figured out the cv head section yet that will bolt up to the driveshaftshop adapter.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I called dss, the only way to get an upgraded u joint in the rear is to buy a 1 piece carbon fiber shaft, which they recommended to upgrade to a 1 piece shaft anyway. I can better control the pinion angle now too. It will be better now for next year!

Mark Leasure 12-23-2015 10:09 PM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

It’s been a while since my last update. I had a 1 piece carbon fiber driveshaft made by dss after I destroyed my dss aluminum HD shaft. This allowed me to move up to a stronger 1310 style u joint too. It's crazy long, I can't wait to see how the CF reacts vs the old 2 piece.

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...223_152957.jpg

I also needed to strengthen up the mounting of the rear end, the brace in the rear broke once, the torque literally ripped it apart. Check out how the chromoly ovaled.

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...223_153359.jpg

I increased the tube wall thickness to .120 from .083, and machined end caps that will be all welded up.

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...223_153526.jpg

And the factory mounts were weak too, so I made stronger ones out of DOM 1026 tube:

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...223_153643.jpg

Luckily I have a lathe for all this type of stuff.

Also I’m upgrading to a 72mm Gen2 PTE turbo this winter, it will make the car even more crazy!

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

That CF driveshaft is sweeeeet. And I can't believe you're bending the mounting pieces, that's crazy power, hopefully the 50% thicker wall holds a bit better haha.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Finished up the stronger rear 3rd member mount. Just need an alignment now.

My tube notching skills are improving. I started using a digital angle finder, the results are below:

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...226_143937.jpg

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...226_143926.jpg

I added a center support to the mounting locations, to make sure there were no issues with the design, in regard to the bolted joint preload. The rear end was used as the fabrication jig for these:

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...224_090632.jpg

And finish cut:

And the final product installed:

I remember Marco going with a tubular subframe after he bounced his pumpkin down the track ten years ago. Yours looks like it can handle the abuse.

Also, the carbon fiber must take up some of the shaft harmonics as I remember Brent was having issues with his one-piece aluminum driveshaft years ago and then he sold it to me.

I'm not sure, they are dss pro axles made to work with the 3kgt rear. This is the dss description on their site:

"These axles feature much larger aerospace grade 36 spline bars (factory are 30 spline), billet ball & cage inner CV, and a Porsche-style 108mm outer CV"

Carbon fiber has about a 50% better critical speed than aluminim. An aluminum driveshaft that long will violate critical speed guidlines, significantly, causing severe vibration/harmonics. There are dsm'ers that have successfully used 1 piece cf driveshafts to over 180mph, it's proven to work. It's a good rotational weight savings too. I didn't weigh the exact difference, but it's noticeable.

The mostly likely are the Porsche 930 CVs then.

Some people on Hybridz seemed concerned about their strength in the setup that went in my car, despite the fact they get used in a lot of stuff.

Which I thought was kind of silly.
