You were right about the bolt. Right where it cocks is a real tough spot, not real smooth to cycle, almost have to dismount it to get it to cycle a round through. I may have the local gunsmith take a file to the part of the bolt where the spring lever is.

Re: The Gun Thread

I wonder if that is true of all Savage rifles or just their Axis line? From what I have read they make pretty accurate guns and the accutrigger seems nice. I had never considered a .270 before, seems like a good medium sized hunting round. What does ammo cost compared to others like 30-06, .308, etc?

Re: The Gun Thread

.270 is just a necked down 30-06 and ammo is the same price since it is so popular. The more expensive Savage's have much smoother actions. It seems like this is intentionally sloppy so they only have to hold the tight tolerance for accuracy at the very end when the bolt engages. I don't think there is a better sub-$300 rifle out there though. Perfect for a deer hunting rifle that is going to get abused like mine :D

So, I want to get a couple of pistols. Probably a high capacity 9mm for concealed carry (not too huge like a 1911) and a 22LR semi. I would like to stay around $400 for the 9mm and $250 on the 22LR, but it isn't set in stone. What do you guys recommend? Used is ok.

I like walther p22's a lot. They just feel nice. Might be able to find a used one in the $250 range

Re: The Gun Thread

Well, I mind as well join this thread, get some more opinions...I am stopping car mods to get a Rifle of some sort (sporting I guess is the technical term I think, but really Assault Rifle).

So Friday I am going to the police department to turn in my permit to purchase papers then I am heading to Bills to do some shooting Friday night and see what they have for me to test. And see if they can order me the gun I am looking at online.

I am leaning toward the FN SCAR 16s right now. My big push to get one right now is indeed the whole ban AR's nonsense going around. I don't want to risk not ever being able to get one so I will be getting one in January.

So it seems like most of the online stuff I am seeing are full of AR fanbois. I have talked to other rifle owners and there is no doubt that the AR is a great platform but I can't imagine its the end all be all. Whenever people ask about guns like the HK416 (MR556 civilian model) or FN SCAR or FN F2000, G36, galil etc etc everyone always chimes in and says you can build a way better AR for that price. I think the AR's are great but I think the SCAR seems to be a more advanced gun that overall is quite a bit better. Is it $2500 good, maybe, maybe not. But I can't seem to find anything whatsoever negative about the SCAR besides price, maybe weight as its 7.3 lbs with no mag I think where I think AR's can get down pretty low, like 4-5 lbs.

Thoughts? Any reason not to get a SCAR? Any other guns (that aren't AR's, as I already know what I'd get if I got an AR style) I should consider.

Price is the last thing I care about, as long as its sub $2800-$3000 (that is getting way too high) because frankly I want to get the gun I really want in case this is the last time I can buy this stuff.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Sidenote, anyone know if Bill's will have a SCAR to shoot? They had two for sale, both black which isn't what I want, but I'd love to shoot one.

My brother in law, has a Rock River Arms LAR-15, and LOVES it. Super Accurate, awesome AR15.

Good luck Murlo. Everywhere is sold out as of 2 days ago on most stuff 5.56/.223 and Glock.

Element Arms sold 300 guns yesterday alone.

Wow dude, why spend that much for a 5.56? You could get a sweet .338 lapua sniper rifle for that price! I guess it would be bolt vs semi auto, but even the M1A doesn't cost nearly that much and you could put a pistol grip stock on it if you wanted the AR look.

Don't want a bolt action. The 5.56 SCAR shares 80% of the parts with the 7.62 version so I could buy a new upper and have two guns.

However, I don't care to have something as big as a .338. This gun will be used mainly for fun, range shooting, cabin fun and small game (coyote and prairie dogs). I was just saying that as a max, I don't think they cost that much. I think the 16s' are roughly 2200-2400.

And Bill's had two scars, just not the color I wanted. They are a dealer, I can just order one, they aren't going anywhere yet. I don't think anyone is buying the nicer, or I guess I should say more expensive ones. People are snatching up all the cheaper AR's in the 500-1500 range.

I was hoping for some suggestions I guess guys, maybe a gun that is really cool that I might have overlooked that is similar to an AR or SCAR (not an AR) that I might have missed. I dunno.

Other than having a specific dollar value in mind, what's the most important thing your are trying to accomplish though your purchase, Dave?

^ This. I was just providing some examples that there are longer range guns with excellent accuracy (sub 1moa) for a lot less money, they just lose the cool AR factor I guess. Most important thing to identify is what you want to accomplish, and what features you really want.
Scope or tactical sights?

Re: The Gun Thread

Could build a Juggernaut for the price of the SCAR and be twice as cool ;)

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...21517615_n.jpg

But in all seriousness, I have heard some mixed reviews on the juggernaut chassis' for the M1A. But then again, I have heard bad things about the SCAR, ACR, you name it. There will always be reviews on people not liking a weapon, but not all weapons are suited for everyone. I think it is really dependent on what you need it for and how you like the feel of a gun. Shoot some ARs and a SCAR. You may end up liking ARs more. I can not really give any strong advise on why to buy a SCAR, havent had the pleasure of shooting one yet.

Re: The Gun Thread

Well my plan was to use iron sights until I save up for a scope, was deabating on an ACOG or HAMR...both are kinda pricey but I love the idea of being able to have some range and attach a red dot too.

Realistically, if I just wanted a gun for shooting at the rage, I wouldn't get this. My main thing will be small game fun (coyotes and prairie dog and beaver etc) and honestly, yes "COOL Factor" is a huge reason why I am looking at the assault rifles. I have always just really wanted an assault/military style weapon. I also want something I could deer hunt with as I will be trying that out eventually.

So I guess....cool factor is technically #1. I like to be different too which is why I don't want an AR15 or similar gun. Otherwise my needs a DPMS panther or something similar would be plenty.

But I do like the idea of shooting a heavier bullet (60 grain and up) and being accurate out to 500 yards+ which the SCAR is good to (assuming you know how to shoot :)).

This help paint the picture at all? I find it easier to talk with people about these kind of things, back and forth is a lot easier then typing a ton of shit.

Re: The Gun Thread

Gotcha... nothing wrong with wanting to be different :)

I don't know how married you are to the 7.62x51 cartage, but it does pack quite a punch when fired. I've only used it (.308) in full sized rifles, so I cannot comment on a SCAR-H, but I would imagine the light-weight all-polymer frame would offer further control challenges.

If you want to look at some other 5.56 options (which you can purchase heavier than 60gr for) check out both the SCAR-L and the AUG A3.

Good luck ordering anything right now. Most distributers aren't taking orders right now because they're so backed up. If you see what you want buy it. Buy mags as well. Most places are selling out fast.

And I vote for a FNAR for a fun tack driver.

Re: The Gun Thread

yeah, people are rushing to buy anything and everything AR. The chances of those guns falling into a ban again is there, but it's not worth worrying about right now. Don't get duped into jacked up prices either, I'd expect things to settle by late spring/summer and have stock and prices back to normal.

You're assuming there won'te be a ban. I wouldn't assume that yet.

I agree, I bought my AR right before the first ban and this feels quite similar. I can also see this happening really fast and once it starts the process he prices will go up even more. I waited and got burned last time, but did get my preban Colt AR.

Re: The Gun Thread

Well I am stopping at the Blaine PD to submit for my permit and then I am going to buy as soon as I get it back.

Depending on prices and availability I might end up with an AR of some kind, there are plenty I like which even inflated some will be reasonable.

Also considering a SIG556 and SIG516 (AR style), which I doubt I will find and Remington ACR or the XCR (don't like the bushmaster ACR, haven't heard good things).

Re: The Gun Thread

I'm trying to hope that a complete AR ban will not happen, but maybe they will focus on the mag size or putting other restrictions on how one purchases a gun.

The questionnaire in my view was pretty flimsy to fill out for a permit, and even though I had one you have to fill out a very similar form now at the gun store as well as go through the background check. And this was just for the .22lr I picked up.

I support making it a tad harder for people to get the guns, but banning them I hope does not happen.

Think about it, an AR ban will not solve anything. Someone can just strap on a few more glocks and mags and get the same results.

That being said, I'll probably try to pick up an AR sometime in Jan as long as I'm able to and the price hasn't gone up that much. I want to think the market will settle and the current buy up is a knee jerk reaction. If it's not, no big deal, I won't subject myself to overpaying for something like that. I'll enjoy plinking away with my .22 for a fraction of the cost.
