Just got the car back from DB. They buttoned up the rest of the exhaust. I was going for a subtle clean look, and as quiet as possible. They nailed it! So it's basically a 3" turbo back w/ a Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonator in the middle, and a Vibrant Oval Muffler in the rear, with a 4" rounded edge/angle cut tip. The sound is louder than stock but still very quiet. On the highway with the windows down I don't even hear it. Thanks again guys!

Re: Project Lex
2jz.. lawds.. sounds good looks nice too.

Re: Project Lex
Sounds nice and quiet enough to not wake the kiddos!
|
Re: Project Lex
It's perfect, seriously.

Re: Project Lex
Looks great. I need to come see this some time.
|
Re: Project Lex
Good fitment and sounds great; excellent choice.
|
Re: Project Lex
Now it just needs a tune! Might try some street tuning first to get it to the point where I know it'll do clean pulls, then have to try and find dyno time somehow since it seems all the local dynos are pretty booked up.

Well I ran some thicker gauge wire to the coils, the old wires I think were too small and were causing it to break up. New wires in and the break-up seems to be gone, however there is some sort of strange buzzing sound coming from the rear under hard acceleration. No idea what it is yet. I looked under there and everything seems normal. I drained the diff and there is quite a bit of fine metal shavings. The magnetic drain plug was pretty coated in stuff too. Wondering if something is going bad inside there. Here's a pic kind of showing the metallic flaking. I know some small flakes aren't totally abnormal, but this seems like a lot to me. The pic doesn't really show that well but you can see some of it. Thoughts?

Re: Project Lex
New exhaust sounds great! Fresh fluid in the rear end and let'r buck. Drain it after some more miles and check again.
You sure it isn't the exhaust you're hearing? Either a resonance or vibration under load (i.e. engine movement) |
Re: Project Lex
+1 on a refill and running it more.

Re: Project Lex
I refilled with some off the shelf diff fluid to see if it would make a difference. At first I thought it did but nope, the sound is still there. I should mention it's not only a sound, you can actually feel the cars acceleration back off a bit too, so it's not just a let r buck situation. I just got done dropping the diff, will be bringing it in to get looked at on Thursday. In the mean time, I have a spare one coming that I'll swap in to see if the sound goes away. Spare one won't have LSD but that's OK, it'll just be my spare for times like this or if I grenade one at the track or whatever.

Re: Project Lex
So in the mean time while I'm waiting for the new diff, decided to work on the rear brakes. The 16" FD rims I picked up as my poor mans drag setup didn't clear the calipers by a nut hair. So I ground a couple spots down on the calipers ever so slightly. Then primed and painted them to match the fronts I did a couple years ago. Here's how the sit now drying. Then they'll get the Supra stickers and some coats of clear, and then back on the car!

Re: Project Lex
open for street, and have the lsd welded and swap it in at the track. or rebuild the lsd and weld the open one for the track.
|
Re: Project Lex
I'm confused, why would I want open rather than LSD on the street? I just want one rear end installed, don't want to swap them out for street/track. Just one installed, and a back-up if it were to ever grenade.

Rear Calipers back on.
http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1406759367 The new diff showed up. I slapped a coat of primer then a coat of black on it to clean it up. Will try to get it mounted up in there over the next couple days. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1406759367 Also just a quick snap of the FD wheels that will become my poor man drag wheel setup. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1406759367 |
Re: Project Lex
Most likely the carrier bearing or pinion bearing are going bad. With that much shavings, I'd say the bearings are worn out causing that noise.
|
Re: Project Lex
So, all that work on the rear calipers was for not. Lesson of the weekend, don't grind calipers down no matter how many people on the internet say they've done it and it's OK, they now leak and are trash :(
So I'm just going back to my original plan which was to ditch them for some Supra NA rear brakes. SC300 are the smallest, Supra NA are bigger, and TT bigger yet + 2 piston. So while I suppose this is a downgrade from what I had, it's still an upgrade over stock. So basically here's what the TT rears looked like. So nice, so sad I ruined them :( http://www.clublexus.com/forums/atta...1&d=1407005936 Here's the NA Supra rear rotors for comparison sake. They are damn near the same size, just a hair smaller. http://www.clublexus.com/forums/atta...1&d=1407005936 And here they are installed, with the Supra NA single piston rear calipers. Tons of clearance for my 16's now, should have just done this in the first place. Everything just lines up and bolts right up. Will just run them as-is this year. Over the winter I may get around to painting them. http://www.clublexus.com/forums/atta...1&d=1407005936 |
Re: Project Lex
Why did you have to grind down the rear caliper?
|
Re: Project Lex
The TT ones do not clear 16" wheels. So anyone who wants to run smaller than 17" rims, say for a track setup, either have to run the NA brakes or shave down the TT's a little to clear. Apparently others have shaved them to clear the FD wheels before, but apparently I shaved a little too much. So NA brakes it is.
Anyhow, I also did a little ricer mod. The car was debadged when I got the body work done, but I had this sticker made and threw it on. Figured it might get some people to do a double take :) http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...IMG_1547c2.jpg |
Re: Project Lex
Your rears don't do much of the braking anyway, just roll with it!
|
Re: Project Lex
Well with the new differential installed, the noise is gone! I had the other differential looked at by MAP, nothing really stood out as being that bad however he did find that the backlash was out of spec by about double. He was able to bring it back within spec. So hopefully at some point here I'll be able to find time to swap it back in to see if that fixed the noise, not sure when that will be though. Until then, I'll just enjoy it with this diff installed for now.

Re: Project Lex
Doing some ricer lighting mods.
Got the spoiler LED brake light working. http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/656/IMG_1616.JPG Installed the 4300k HID kit I had laying around since removing it from my Envoy. Bought some LED's off ebay. White LED's in the license plate area as well as the headlight city lights. They look more blue to me than I would have light, was going for more just pure white. But whatever, looks better than the dull standard bulbs. Also purchased Yellow LED's for the turning lights. I have the blinkders on in the pics so it would turn on and you can see how it looks. They actually look fairly amber in real life which was another disappointment as I was hoping for straight yellow. Looks more yellow in the pics than they do in real life. But whatever, it'll work. I will be rewiring them however so that they just turn on with the parking lights. http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/656/IMG_1623.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/656/IMG_1617.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/656/IMG_1626.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/656/IMG_1625.JPG |

Re: Project Lex
Very nice.

Ricer. :D

Re: Project Lex
That sucks about the calipers. I suppose having the dual piston caliper means you have fluid running around each outer edge. I remember clearancing the hell out of my 2-piston front calipers to run 16's, but of course there's no fluid lines to hit on them.

Long time no update. Hasn't been much to update anyway. But did do some small stuff.
First, I feel like the sound quality coming from the China head unit left a bit to be desired. The aux input plug was becoming intermittent, and the bluetooth streaming was just horrendous, it's like it only streamed treble. So, I picked up a new Sony unit off Amazon for $150. It doesn't have GPS but I never really used that anyway, just use my phone. It does do DVD though, has aux in, USB in, and bluetooth which included a mic. So that is installed, and man everything sounds so much better. So if anyone wants a china unit, I have one up for bid lol. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1427848977 Also, I had my twin 255's installed but still on stock wiring. So I picked up some relays and did a rewire. I bought a bulkhead stud connector off Summit that seems to work good for passing the power through the tank lid rather than connecting it back to the stock small wiring for passing through that which seems kind of like a waste to go through all that just to have it connect back down to a tiny wire at the end. Can immediately tell they are louder than they used to be. I mounted both relays so I'd have an installed spare in case the one dies. I've never had one die on me before but I've read several stories of relay failures so I figured for how cheap they are why not have one in there ready to rock just in case. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1427848977 I also did an oil change with some Pennzoil Platinum and a Wix filter. I will be changing out the tranny fluid with some Redline MT-85, then putting some Amsoil in the diff. At that point, take it on a few test drives and then I'll be shipping the car off to Jordan in Florida. Jordan has his own little company called Powersquirt. He's basically a Megasquirt power user, and his specific area of expertise is on 2JZ applications. He has an SC300 himself. He works closely with the developers of MS / TunerStudio. Basically he's the fuckin man when it comes to 2JZ and Megasquirt. He's the one who has been helping me from the very beginning. So none-the-less, I'm going to send the car to him to get tuned, and get any other bugs worked out like the Crank/cam signal noise that keeps popping up. He's doing it all for free, except I'll be paying out the ass to get it shipped. That's about it for now! |
Re: Project Lex
Can't wait to see this turned up and ready to rock.
