Awesome!

Sucks you have to ship it to get it tuned, no other solutions that would work locally? Or does switching to something non squirt make the price of shipping look decent? Cool hes tuning it for free though.

Re: Project Lex

Not many locally want to tune MS. The ones that will (like shane) i trust, however they may not be able to try and fix some of the bugs ive been dealing with like the signal noise issue. So thats why im shipping it to Jordan because he has dealt with that a lot, and his area of expertise is this exact application. I couldnt put it in anyone betters hands. Once thats all squared away, then local tuning becomes a much better option because youre not dealing with the bugs anymore.

I have thought about switching to say AEM but there is a cost there. But theres a cost to ship the car too. I thought about it and just decided to ship it. If for some reason he just cant get it to work right then i guess ill really be considering switching.

Wow, shipping across the country for tuning, very Ferrari-esque. :D

Just read through your build, and I must say very cool!! I barely see these cars anymore, but to see one with a turbo is awesome! Nice work.

Got to love noise and sync loss.. I've been fighting that in my Audi Coupe Quattro (MS3x) for a few months... I forget, what's the crank and cam signal setup on the 2jz?

Halon 04-01-2015 04:04 PM

Re: Project Lex

24 - 1 setup (VR Sensors). There are actually 2 cam signals but I'm just using 1 since that's all MS3x has inputs for.

Another small update. Fresh tranny and diff fluid in. Also I ordered up some LED's, so the interior convenience lighting is all switched over to LED now. Ricer stuff!

Lastly, I played a bit with software filtering some more. I may be sitting better as far as that noise issue goes. If so then I won't be shipping the car. Time will tell though, I'm not holding my breath, but maybe I got lucky. I did get some estimates, and to ship the car is roughly $1k each way. That's a lot of dough, so if I do end up needing Jordan he said he'd be willing to fly up here. I'd pay for his ticket, but all in all it'd probably end up being half the price of shipping the car.

I also bought an Infinity Basslink to simplify things. I loved the one I had in the Talon, but in this car it just does not sound right. So I may have a basically brand new Basslink up for sale soon.

Re: Project Lex

Basslink works well in open cabin cars (hatchbacks, SUV's, minivans etc). Have one in the sequoia and love it.

If you sell, let me know. I want my bro to put one in his minivan.

I was gonna call dibs, but I'll get in line.

I hope the issue is solved, let me know if you want some help tuning.

Sure. If he wants to try it out for a day that's no biggie. I paid like $170 shipped for it I think. I don't want to take a huge loss on it or I might just put it in the Envoy or something. If he makes a reasonable offer I'd sell it to him.

Re: Project Lex

Small update. Been driving the car quite a bit. Seems to be running pretty nice actually. I have to go look through my notes, but the WG spring setup I have in there now must be around 17psi. Car feels real strong. Idle and cruising is pretty much perfect, which I think is a result of Shane's initial tuning from last year. Starting still has some room for improvement but I'm OK with how it is for now.

So with that being said, I've scheduled a few hours of dyno time on the 20th at RavenWorks for some WOT tuning. Assuming dyno time goes well and doesn't uncover any issues, the goal is to keep boost at spring pressure and setup some conservative fuel and timing curves. And then just enjoy it. It'd be very gratifying if I can hit the 500hp mark! But not really going for numbers here, just going for a solid conservative setup that I can enjoy for now. Then once I'm comfortable with it I can work out any minor issues and turn the boost up little by little.

Lets see what that BW turbo is made of!! 40psi!!

Glad to hear its coming together for you.

RavenWorks dyno session today went extremely well with Bob. 1st pull was on WG only boost (10psi creeping to 13psi). Pull was smooth, zero issues, and made 450hp/380tq. Over the course of the next 2hrs or so, we had it up to 20psi. We were trying to keep it at a decent yet conservative boost level, and same conservative mindset for the tune, don't shoot for the moon. Ended up at 545hp/462tq @ 20psi (falling to 17psi by redline). Full boost around 4300rpm, rev'd it out to 7600rpm (again, conservative redline). These are heart breaker SuperFlow numbers (probably closer to 575 on a DynoJet). Also the WB reading were off by about .5-.6, we were actually right around 12.1. Extremely happy with the results. Car never skipped a beat the entire time, ran absolutely flawlessly. That's plenty for me to have fun with this season, so just leaving it at that. Next year if everything holds together, I'll go for more.

Huge thanks to Bob, he did a great job and was a pleasure dealing with him. Also props to Shane as he had the idle/drivability already dialed in so well we didn't touch it. Shane couldn't do WOT tunes because of issues, so that was the goal of this session. Lucky to have such great resources locally! Also might I add, the RavenWorks facility was in a class of its own, so clean and so much impressive machinery.

Re: Project Lex

That's awesome power man, congrats on getting it running well! Bet it's a lot of fun.
Curious why the boost falls to 17psi. Surely your turbo can provide more airflow than that. Is the boost controller set to 17 and spikes to 20psi maybe? If it held 20psi I think it would be in the upper 500s for peak power.

That could be, but who knows. I'm sure the fact that I just have a 10lb WG spring doesn't help. Later tonight I can post a snap shot of the log that shows the boost level. Once I want to turn it up more, I'll be adding more springs to the WG which I'm hoping will help keep the boost curve flatter. I have an 11psi and 5psi spring, that can all be added since they are different physical sizes. So if I have all 3 in there, I should be at about 26psi on WG alone, no MBC.

I'd guess maybe 3500lbs. Would like to get it on a scale someday. Probably no more than your X weighs I'd think.

LOL, just noticed this, must of edited it for the zing ;)

My X is closer to 3300 I would think the way I run it sans lots of stuff and lighter things. But I am also not light at 220-225.

I was just curious on the weight, had no idea what these things weigh, figured it could be a bit heavier with lexus luxury type added weight.

Everyone refers to these cars are pigs, but really they weight just slightly more or even less than some modern cars. And there is plenty of weight reduction to be had.

SC300 Curb Weight 3482

Supra (Hard)3475 (Targa)3525

Evo X Curb weight (GSR)3517 (MR)3594

Evo 9 Curb weight 3263

2G DSM AWD Curb Weight 3270

Again, I had no idea, was just curious haha. They all call the X a pig too.

3482 stock isn't bad at all with a car like this.

Anyway, I am sure the car is a blast and I wanna see 26psi!

Re: Project Lex

The front seats weight appx 150lbs total. They're big, heavy, and not even that comfortable. I've been looking at trying to get something like RSX seats for it. Was even looking at the seats in the 4G Eclipse at tint day. Just something nice and modern, manual not powered for weight savings. Kerry put Evo 8 seats in his Supra, I wouldn't mind doing that if I could find a set for a good price. Probably knock 100lbs off the car with the front seats alone.

And on. Mounting the tires fucked up the plastidip on the wheel, so I just peeled it all off. Peeled off pretty easy. I hated the way it turned out anyway so no big deal. But kinda sucks if I want to dip them again a different color, seems like every time I swap on tires I'd have to re-dip them.

Re: Project Lex

Wow after seeing what you have done with this car I totally want one. Very very very nice build. I beat the car is a total sleeper to alot of people. The tires give it away that it might have some power. Cant wait to see what it makes when you push it.

Halon 05-30-2015 08:01 AM

Re: Project Lex

Yeah, I'd say it's a sleeper for sure. That was kinda the goal. It still idles somewhat normal, exhaust isn't crazy loud. So I could be chilling next to someone at a stop light and they'd probably have no idea. The tires do give it away a little, but that's kinda cool too, like "hey why does that car have those tires?" kinda thing.

Question though. So with these tires being drag radials, I thought I've heard people say you should not dyno with these tires. Is that true?

JET 06-04-2015 10:14 PM

Re: Project Lex

Those shouldn't be soft enough to worry about. Dyno'ing should be fine.
