The car is looking awesome! I personally think better wheels would look nicer. U can try on my black 2G GSX rims if u want for a pic!

Re: The Black Beast

Yeah, the wheels are just some that I bought a few years back, and I'd like to get something else. No black wheels though.

Looks sick man!

I would suggest tinting the front corners along with the rear ones you plan on doing.

A clean black 1g, can't get much better than that. Keep up the good work man!

Re: The Black Beast

I already tinted the rear side markers. I might tint the fronts if I ever get around to it just to get rid of the white line around the edge where they used the clear sealant to glue the lense on.

Nice project you have going.

Re: The Black Beast

Holy crap it's been a while since I've updated this... Anyways, the car now has new wheels and tires, 17x8 Mille Miglia wheels wrapped in 235/45 Sumitomo HTRZIII tires. Also installed an Innovate wideband and installed some black/dark grey seats from a '90 non turbo eclipse.

More importantly, as of today, the car is powered by an EvoIII 16g. Started the project yesterday but ran into a few problems and ran out of daylight so we had to stop for the night. Got it all put back together today and she runs great now. Just gotta plum in the boost controller since wastegate pressure at the intake manifold dropped by about 2 psi since this turbo is much smaller.

I haven't decided if I'm gonna get it tuned on E-85 this fall or just wait till spring, but eventually that will be happening as well. If I decide to wait till spring, I will probably just switch to the hta68 dsm and e-85 at the same time. The car is really dirty right now so pics will come after I get it washed.

Sweet! Looking forward to feedback and comparo to the gt3076. Should def be more reliable at least :) Love to see some numbers out of this beast, awesome setup!

Re: The Black Beast

If you're running an external gate on a 16g, that is awesome. I wonder if you can better hold boost up top because you don't have some weak internal flapper blowing open. That is when you get E85 and can push 30psi on this thing.

Haha 30psi on a 16 is a wish, but you could get close.

Hope that jpipe worked out for ya!

Not on E85, 95tsi runs 29 psi currently, and was up to 31psi on the dyno during tuning.

Yeah, I'm still running the Tial 38 off the o2 housing. We just took out the flapper, then welded up the hole in the side of the turbine housing so we'll see how well it can hold boost in the high RPMs before it just runs out of breath.

I also still need to do a boost leak test to make sure we didn't miss any pinhole spots when we welded up the new outlet pipe.

37psi spike to 27-28psi by redline here. hit 40psi a couple times.

On a 16g?

Re: The Black Beast

Yes on a 16g. Mine will hold 30psi on the stock wastegate just on the spring pressuare, but that is a modded ralliart gate

Re: The Black Beast

I run 32-31psi and drop to 24psi by 7k on my small 16g. Stock internal wastegate.

Yeah, there was a broken off stud in the outlet side of the turbine housing that was more difficult to get off than we thought it would be, so we had to drill it out then clean up the threads with a tap. Whoever clocked the compressor housing last time didn't grind off all of the little locater pin so we had to get that out the rest of the way. Also there were some messed up threads in the outlet of the compressor housing, so we had to clean out those threads. Also, the oil feed fitting wouldn't get tight, so we had to use some red loctite to get that to tighten up. Then just as we were finishing it up on Thursday night, the compressor housing popped off because we didn't have it on the backing plate far enough to get the snap ring in the groove all the way.

So it was way more of a pain in the ass than I thought it would be, but it went back together pretty easily on Friday morning. Ken had it all back together by the time I got there at 1, and nothing leaks so I'm happy. Now I just gotta get that coupler so I can put my intake and filter back on.

40 psi on a 16g? Am I reading that right? I'm sorry I guess I've just never heard of a 16g that can actually run that much boost.

4g63tcrazy 10-11-2009 06:16 PM

Re: The Black Beast

Looks like a few mitsustyle guys need to read up on the 16g's! Haha. Lately since E85 has become big alot of people have been pushing 16's waay past what would seem to be their limit and put down some good numbers with it.

Kevin 1G Drummer 10-11-2009 06:32 PM

Re: The Black Beast

^^ Exactly why I switched to it. I figured with my cams, intake manifold and external wastegate, I should be able to hold boost better in the upper RPM ranges. So far it's rock solid at 20 psi to redline. I don't really wanna go much higher than that til I get tuned on e-85 though, since every now and then I'll get a little knock in 3rd gear. I really need to get a damn laptop... haha

That, and it's much easier to drive around town now. If I wanna go around someone quickly, I don't need to downshift since I can hit 20 psi in 5th gear at about 3300 rpm, which puts me at about 70 mph and pulling hard. Judging by the butt dyno, it feels like it's pulling about 90% as hard as the 3076 was, but now it just starts at a lower rpm. The only thing I miss about that turbo is the way it sounded when it spooled up. haha

40psi is just waaaay past the efficiency range of a turbo that small, you would just be blowing hot air at that boost level even with E85. A fellow style member's car was up to 31 or so on the dyno and the higher we went the less power we made so we ended up going back down to 29psi because the turbo was simply out of breath.

Also according to this website, the highest boost any of these guys were running on a 16g was 31.5 psi
http://dsmtimes.org/times.php?Header...rbo_16g&Page=1

If someone here is running 40psi on a 16g, I want to see the setup because that would be a hell of a feat!

4g63tcrazy 10-11-2009 07:09 PM

Re: The Black Beast

On dsmtalk there was these guys running 40psi on their 16g with E85 and put down 499whp. That's the most power to date with the 16g. You can do some research yourself to get more creditable facts instead of me just telling you if you'd like. There is also english racing who ran meth/E85 with NO intercooler running 30psi to redline with no issues.

Re: The Black Beast

You got any links to these people's setups? I'd like to see them.

Re: The Black Beast

I don't have them saved no. But there are alot of threads on Talk about high boost with 16g's. They get very in depth also I believe. Been a little while since I've read any of them.

Re: The Black Beast

Kevin I have an old laptop that I am getting rid of if you need soemthing for tuning.

I only spiked 40psi and couple times usually in 4th.

Not to be rude, but you guys should probably move your conversation / thread jack into private messages. :D

Hence this is a project thread in the project section, not a 16g thread in the forced induction section... ;)

Kevin, do you need the 4" - 2.5" (or whatever) coupler for the FP 4" intake? I have one if you want it. Buy me some beers on the cruise.

Oh sure, now you offer... I just ordered one from FP since I couldn't get ahold of Brownman's wife to get his. If i can cancel my order, I'll take you up on that.
