Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Wire it up so that we can switch to a 1G eprom and a 2g maf when you get here. If it was my car, I would keeping putting things back towards stock and keep them stock until the problem is found and then start adding parts back in. If you have 2 possible failed parts then you are screwed and will never figure it out.
It's hard when you have a lot of the common possible problem makers on your car. Here is a list of common troublemaker on DSMs. 1. Boost leaks 2. COP 3. MSD Ignition 4. Relocated Battery 5. Relocated Alternator 6. Wiring harness tucked/modified 7. AEM EMS 8. Shitty plug wires like Magnecor 9. CAS 10. Fuel pump voltage 11. Bad alternator 12. Bent valve/rocker popped off/valves hitting pistons/worn cam 13. Head lifting during boost 14. Bad knock sensor 15. Dipstick blowing out 16. Clogged fuel filter 17. Coolant temp sensor bad or bad wiring to it Then there is just having the wrong parts for what you are trying to do or the wrong supporting mods. An SCM61 on a car with no suporting mods isn't going to make anymore power than if it had a 16G, it will just be laggier. -RantKing |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
That's quite a list to be checked Shane! Good thing there's only about 13 out of 17 of those possible problems on Anthony's car.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Swifty, You only tried ONE stock ignition, perhaps it was not working properly?
I don't know how reliable or long lasting the stock dsm stuff is, but in my experience, it's quite common to replace a bad part with another bad part because it's used. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Dude, your car sounded like it exploded today on that on-ramp. Get that shit worked out!!!
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?

It has had 2 or more problems the entire time, just been trying to eliminate them systemactically. I am glad you are in the same boat of start returning it to proven stock parts until the problem surfaces. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?

Hell thats what we do if this thing wasn't a race car right? get it back to stock slowly and figure out what the problem is. Swifty said he is ready to go back to stock ignition last night, so hopefully the next time he comes on here it will be in. B mans car is sick. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
damn rev that thing another 1000 rpms or try a smaller exhaust housing. good numbers though!!
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
What crappy luck only making mid 500awhp at DB. haha
Sucks you have issues but thats still some really good power, I wish I could make that much. I've also got a stock coil pack sitting around if you wanted to try and see if that helps out the reving issue |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Well, have you gotten to work on it Swift?
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?

I have not gotten to work on it at all. I got a list of stuff I'm doing..t-case seals, new tranny and t-case fluids..just cuz, and I didn't get the stock ignition stuff from the old house yet, as my old roommate wasn't there. I'm still looking for a bypass plug for the MSD. As for the revving I'm loosing hope. 2+ years chasing this issue, and it's pissing me off. I am considering just going to a smaller setup..maybe keep t4, but do a 6262 setup..I dunno yet. I seemed to do pretty well against a red corvette on 494, and then a red viper on 42, in my neck of the woods. Scurred the shit outta my mother too! ;) -A. Swift |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Quote:
We can pop my dsm link and coil pack in your car and see what that does. We have nearly the same setup... |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
still, remember half my car is missing as far as wiring is concerned. I dont' care to go re-wire everything. I have tried John's AEM box, so I atleast know FOR SURE mine is ok. I'm gonna try and get a coilpack and such from my old house with the wires tomorrow, and work on logging it, seeing what shane thinks. Also, on a side note, I am trying to work out in my head how to set up a switch for the logging feature on AEM so I may just turn the switch on and off. That way, I'm not logging EVERYTHING till I pull it with the laptop. I have it set up currently to log anything above -14 vac, 3500rpms, and more then 50% throttle. But, I'd rather log a broader range, without logging the whole time, so I'll figure out a switch.

Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Glad to see you're finally tossing that COP setup for now. You have to remember that when you tested it last time, it was with an AEM that was horribly wired, so that could have been a contributing factor before. I also vote making it run on DSMlink and ditch the whole AEM setup. AEM seems a little overcomplicated considering how capable and easy to use as DSMlink is.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
eh..I like the AEM..i'm learning more and more about it..So, I will not ditch it. I know it seems everyone here seems to dislike it, and I'm one of the last few people on it, but whatever.
-A. Swift |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Quote:
Don't get rid of the aem. That would be stupid of you imo. You'll just have to like everyone said throw a few stocker parts on until the problem is found, and go after it with a good dvom. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Hey man, I have AEM, and I have some learning to do, but I think it's cool. It also happens to be that I'm the only starquest owner using one (that I know of).

Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Good luck, holla if you need something.

Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
I think I blew it up..turbo atleast. I dunno.
Was on my way to my rents for dinner, did a quick lil single gear pull..didn't even rev it all the way out, and it started to smoke. Blue smoke. Ever since..driving is ok, but as soon as you let off the gas and decel/vac then it smokes pretty decently. Also, when going from a stop, if you give it and kinda gas..nothing serious, but some it will smoke. regular driving, is ok no smoke seen in my mirrors. But, vac. it smokes. My exhaust is coated on the inside too of oil. Smelt of oil. I dunno if the turbo seals are blown. I know it was just sent in to PTE like a year ago for the fins all messed up, and I got a new CHRA. So, why it's blown is beyond me. I tried pulling the intake off, and it has slight shaftplay up and down, and I can't tell if any in/out. I also don't really know for sure what is considered "normal". But, do these symptoms sound like a blown turbo seal, or something more serious? -A. Swift |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
:( Hopefully its just the turbo.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Does it get any boost anymore? when mine went it would smoke all the time and would not create anymore boost.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
I babied it home..I'm not ready to go out and take that chance..when something goes wrong on my car, I DO NOT beat on it in any way till I know what the issue is and it's fixed.
-A. Swift |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
ready for that 16g now? ;)
Sucks dude. Hope you get it figured out. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
check the spark plugs for oil, do a compression test, maybe find someone to lend you a turbo that is known good and fits. If it was my car, those are the tests I would perform, if I could get ahold of another turbo.,
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Keep it simple, your best bet, pull your turbo and manifold. Oil in the exhaust runners, engine, otherwise its the turbo.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Look on the bright side, the thread is now living up to the title!
Compression and leak down test is the first thing you should do. That will let you know if there is any serious damage to the engine. After that I would start looking at the turbo. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
For in/out shaft play, none is normal. Most turbo's you can't feel it. If it is anything near side to side shaft play, it's fucked.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Quote:
The exhaust manifold is going to get pulled this week to verify it's not the turbo. I have my fingers crossed that it's the seals since those can be done without pulling the head and it's only $30 for a new set of valve seals. GL man! |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Well, I went and checked again, and i'm not feeling a ton of play on the turbo :( I dunno what it is anymore. I don't have a compressor for a leakdown tester, even though I got the leakdown tester in the garage. I'll do a compression check tomorrow when I get off work I guess, but arg.
-A. Swift |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
That sucks Swifty. Hopefully you can diagnose and fix it quickly and without having to spend too much more money.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Yes, that is the key there. Little to no money to fix.
Good luck, it was cool to read about awd burnouts. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Im with black rose, pull your mani at least and check for oil or burnt up oil up in the exhaust ports of the head. If its just really sooty but not oil soaked like it sounds like it should be chances are its not in the engine. For there to be actual oil in your exauhst system I would think you would of noticed a huge performance loss due to plug fouling for it to run thru the cylinders and then out your exausht in that way. Probably turbo seals.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Pulled plugs, all great condition. checked compression..all ok. Pulled the exh. manifold..runners and head looked dry. Pulled exh. off, saw oil sitting in exh. housing on turbo. ARG! This center section was brand fricken new! I run it fed from teh oil housing, no restrictor, as I was instructed. oil is 15w40. WTF! Now it looks like it overheated a bit, and now I gotta fork up a fricken grip to rebuild it? I'm selling this damn thing, and getting something else. FUUUUCK!
-A. Swift |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
push the car off the cliff and get an evo? lol
sorry man, i hope things change for ya |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
And you want another PTE turbo WHY?
If the center section was brand new, warranty it. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
I'm sending them an email right now. I only suggest the 6262 for the price. That's it. Ideally, I'd get the HTA3586r, but that's WAAY too much cashola. Friiiiiickk..
-A. Swift |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Run an adjustable FPR on the oil feed line and have it return the excess into the pan. Then you can put a gauge after that and set it to 30psi max or something.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
Just curious, but why are you running 15w40? That seems a little heavy to me.
|
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
I wanted a bit thicker oil for the car. I was just trying something different.
-A. Swift |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
It's not abnormal to be running 15-40 at these power levels. Plenty of others doing it, including myself. Not sure if on that turbo, if running the feed from the housing without a restrictor is a good idea though. No idea what PTE recommends. Mine has a restrictor because that's what my turbo's supplier recommended.
Sucks to hear about your turbo. Stories like these are why I will more then likely never run a PTE turbo again (although I hear their BB turbo's seem to last a little longer). Good luck getting it taken care of. |
Re: Will my fricken' luck ever change?
I was just thinking that since he's running heavier weight oil that it might have increased the pressure to the turbo. In this case, it could have been too much pressure. In my experience the thicker the oil, the higher the pressure.
