I suspect that most people don't want to pre-pay. $55 if you don't make it for some reason would pretty much suck.

Hey guys, I'm interested in attending, but I just installed a new clutch. They clutch will probably have right around 500 miles on it by Oct. 3rd. Do you think it would be to hard on the clutch to do 3 dyno pulls this early in its life?

The safe answer would be not to do it. On the other hand a dyno run isn't a drag-strip launch...it's just flooring it from low RPMs to cut-off, right? I've actually never seen a car dynoed but I did with my bike once. It didn't seem that stressful to me.

Re: 2009 Fall Dyno Day - Oct 3rd @ MAP

Depends on how much power you're making. I'd be somewhat hesitant to dyno it with so few miles on a new clutch, especially if your setup will make any kind of power. Although, their Dynojet isn't a load bearing dyno, so there won't be a whole lot of load on the drivetrain.

Don't wait! Just put a few extra miles on it, the weather is SO NICE lately, go for a few drives, come to a few meets, you'll be in good shape ;) If you're anywhere close to 500, it'll be fine.

Ok, i'll see how close i get to 500 miles over the next two weeks. Hope to see you guys there. I too would like to see the differences between Map's dyno and DB's dyno as my car has only ever seen DB's dyno.

Power mods on my Evo:

2004 Evo GSR SSL
Stock motor
Stock Turbo
Stock BCS spike at 24 psi taper to 20
Works drop in panel air filter
Muse LICP
Ported 10.5 hotside
Ported Megan o2
Full TBE
Walbro

Cams next spring!

It made 260 hp and 280 torque on DB's dyno non-shootout mode.

$65 day of or pre pay $55 seems pretty high for a dyno day.. when Im sure it would cost $65 any day of the week?? I thought Dyno days were a way to make $$ by price low to get alot of people in which would bring in more money in the end. Rather than not so many people paying full price. I remember when I had a mustang and TCS had dyno days you paid like $25-$30 for 2 or 3 pulls..

Ill be there shootin the shit tho!! :)

That is a discounted rate. MAP lists 3 dyno pulls on their website for $75. $20 off is a 26% discount.

Yeah Its cheaper but doesn't seem like as good of a deal when you have to wait for a ton of people to wait for.

A way they could do it another time maybe is Mitsustyle rents out the dyno for a day (certain amount of time) for lets say $500. The cost then gets devided among all those using the dyno so the more there is the cheaper it is down to a certain dollar amount ($30/per) then what ever extra it brings in to be over the cost of $500 goes back into the website/events??

Like I said, just set a goal, go for some extra fun cruises, the more stop-go traffic you can do the better. Try driving across the entire city on surface streets one night, that may not get you a ton of mileage, but will def get you to where you need to be with the break-in.

IDK where you guys had dyno days for $25-30, but there are several factors to consider:
-TCS = RWD, they can use a cheap dynojet. We are using an AWD dyno, which are never cheap, and more difficult to setup and run for each car on/off the dyno.
-its 2009, prices tend to go up over time.
-lastly, know that I've fought hard to keep the prices on everything down to keep this affordable. I have been organizing dyno days with local AWD dyno shops for the past 5 years, and it has always been $50/car, jumping to $55 only this year. Please remember that some of the money goes back into the site, prizes, trophies, etc, and often it is ME that ends up eating the loss every time. I try really really hard to brake even for the event, and it rarely happens.

Furthermore, comments like this honestly are hard for me to ignore; several people put a LOT of time, money and energy into these events and this site. If you can't afford the extra $20 over these mythical $30 dyno days, then please just come and hang out as you say, but leave any badmouthing at home. These events are meant to be fun, part of a hobby, weekend fun. A little negativity goes a long ways.

Any situation like this would be on a case-by-case basis. Sign up, and if things are iffy getting close to the event, keep me informed and I'll do whatever I can to refund most if not all of your money. Calling me at noon the day of the event saying you 'might make it later' is not gonna fly, nor will telling me as I call your name to get up on the dyno :) We're a pretty small community here, so reach out to me via PM, phone call, or txt directly as I may miss posts in this or other threads.

If that's your attitude, then you're kinda missing the point ;) It's not like going to the dentist. Half of the fun is hanging out and watching other people's cars on the dyno!

It would be cool if it worked that way but let's say we get a good deal and the dyno is $85/hour, $500 buys us about 6 hours. If it starts at 11 and ends at 5, we could get about 12-15 cars on. Historically, getting 10-15 people to sign up well enough in advance to decide on a price is about the benchmark we've hit, and well, you're right back in that $50-area almost instantly. 1/4 people don't show or don't end up dynoing, so then more people need to pay the day of, and did the other people that signed up before pay in advance? If not, who covers the $500 if it needs to be up front? Who operates the dyno, straps the cars down, etc etc.

I like your idea but in all honesty there's a reason we run the dyno days the way we do, because over the years we've found a recipe that works for us. We're constantly trying to improve upon this, and as a result this year we're doing the pre-pay thing, and after the spring dyno day I am very happy with how it works. I have the ability to refund money (as stated above) if needed, so no one should really be scared to sign up ahead of time, and ultimately the cost is as fair as it is gonna get. The cost is 100% justified by all of the above as well as the dyno facility paying for the dyno, the employees to run it, and the insurance to run it.

Basically what I'm saying is, quite kicking tires and sign up already, this event is gonna be a blast!

Re: 2009 Fall Dyno Day - Oct 3rd @ MAP

I think Mike Neal needs to go do a price comparison between an old school 2WD dyno and the new AWD dynos. Go price out what they are new and then you'll realize why there is a price difference in using them at a shop.

The MitsuStyle dyno days are very reasonable!

later,
Curt

The Owwdee gets replacement parts, no go stuff unless a stock thing breaks. I figure it makes around 160-210awhp, pending the torque converter slip.

I plan on starting a new project this upcoming spring or fall hopefully and will be out in 2011 or 2012. With the new house and school and side jobs, to busy for one at the moment. If they werent on a Saturday I'd come out and check one out.

Most shops around charge $75 for 3 pulls for just any regular day, DB, MAP, HiTech, etc.

The TCStangs dyno day this spring was even $50 if they had more than 15 cars. $60 if they had less.

This event is not a bad price at all if you ask me, and better organized than most other events around.

I guess I havent been to a dyno day in a while so yeah I can understand inflation ;) I think people are taking the comment wrong. Im not bad mouthing the event.. or the price. Just from what I have went to seemed high. But youre right that was along time ago and a 2wd DJ vs an AWD/FWD DJ.. The idea I gave was just an idea, When we did the TCS one the last one I was at was when John Hailey had his shop in SLP. They had the moderators or something strap the cars... It was like $30.. but that was 6yrs ago or so lol..

But Like I said, Ill be there to have a good time and see some cars hopefully not break!! ;)

My car originally put down 210 hp and 240 tq on DB's dyno. So with a little over a grand invested the car makes another 50 whp and another 40 wtq. Over all its a pretty modest build. I've spent the most money on my suspension so far, I like to think that this is the way the car should have originally came stock from the factory.

I'm in the process of putting miles on my clutch, and there is a good chance you guys will see me there.

I dunno about you, but I know I wouldn't want someone who doesn't know anything about operating a dyno, responsible for making sure my car doesn't go flying off the rollers at the top of 3rd gear with the wheels spinning at 90+mph. I'll leave that to the people who run the dyno every day.

Did you not read anything I and others wrote above? I've ran and attended tons of dyno days and even when I 'help out' I will not be the one to put the final tug on the straps, and the dyno facilities drive the car on/off the rollers, as well as do the actual pull. Its cool that you want to question every little detail, perhaps you would care to volunteer to help us out for the day? That would be the most helpful :)
