Got the cams installed this past weekend along with doing the 60k maintenance on the car. Again huge thanks to Shane at DB Performance for all the tips when installing the cams, a great deal on the cams, the great tune, and making time for before and after pulls.

On to the graphs: You can see it made a bit more power and held it a lot better up top. Less boost and a more conservative tune as well.

Wootski! LOL @ 30-35whp gains for the entire top-end being 'a bit' to you :D

Seriously though, said it before and I'll say it again, this is a fantastic power level to rock a DD evo at. Now just enjoy and have fun with it!

Lookin good man!

BTW I have a can of night shades if you need some more. It's still nearly full as I only used it to slighty smoke some corner lights on the Envoy. If ya wanna use some, feel free, all I ask is you don't use the entire can :)

x2...in my opinion its all downhill after stock turbo e85 land, great setup. Bigger setups do have their perks though.

Regardless, great power!

pretty sweet numbers! that torque curve is just insane and the hp curve is amazing!

Kick ass numbers dude!

If you were still looking for a 3rd gauge for your pod thingy I saw something from Diiirk@AwdMotorsports yesterday about being able to log oil pressure with the AEM gauge through the stock ECU, that might be pretty slick

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Thanks for the compliments fellas!

I know I should be happy and just drive it but if I find a good deal on a manifold to bolt up my old dsm turbo it'll pretty much be a done deal. haha

Thanks dude but after a while I think the side markers looks dark enough for me. I appreciate the offer though!

Yea still looking for a 3rd gauge. Got a linkzors? That would be pretty swet to be able to log oil pressure. Still need to wire up my wideband and map sensor to log though too!

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Hope this helps, it was in a thread about logging with the AEM wideband. You might have to get a hold of him to figure out how to do it, who knows there may be 10 threads explaining how to do it, but this is what I saw:

BTW, i also have this working the same way using an aem oil pressure gauge. If anyone is interested in the formula let me know.

Got the thing lowered on some tanabe springs with MR struts this weekend. Ride feels smoother than stock and looks great too.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...omcanon124.jpg

Also got my parts to install the nitrous but still can't figure out how to wire it up like my dsm. Any of the evo tuning guru's know how to configure the ecu to turn on an output above a certain RPM and above a certain mph? More so just the RPM as i would wire it up to a main power switch.

Also got an STM egr block off plate so I'll get around to installing that and delete all that egr garbage one of these days.

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Stock ecu as of now only has input triggers, not output triggers. I bet you could wire together a pretty simple circuit that would take voltage from the CAS and speedo and output 5v when both are above a certain voltage pretty easily. I bet shane or my buddy Jordan Price could whip it out w/o too much trouble once you figured out the trigger values you want (get them from the logger).

New ride height looks great, just in time for pot-hole season! :D

I guess I used the wrong terminology maybe? On the dsmlink I wired it up with a relay, a power switch, and to the FPR on the ecu. DSMLink had the option to set the FPR up so that above a certain RPM, above a certain MPH, above certain throttle position, and below certain knock it would trigger the "output" which if memory serves was a ground. So for example above 5k, above 97% throttle, above 50mph and below 1 count of knock it would complete the circuit. However the solenoids would only have power once the master power switch was manually switched inside the car.

I can figure out the wiring up the solenoids and all that fun stuff no problem. I just don't know how to set up something like the FPR controll in the evo ecu. I bought a 1.3u cable the other day and downloaded EvoScan and ECUFlash so I can log/flash if I really knew what I was doing. I've also spend hours trying to figure out how to set up a switch like the FPR was setup like on DSMLink but the closest thing I found was something with the intercooler sprayer. Any advice or links to reading would be appreciated!

Re: '03 BBY Evo

You used the right terminology, and again I'm pretty sure there's only inputs used (to switch maps or read different sensors) and not any outputs available.

How are you liking the new power level with the cams and re-tune?

C3L1CA 03-27-2011 05:13 PM

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Ohhh I gotcha, thanks for the input!

I'm really liking the car the more I drive it. It's nice to have a little bit of power and all the nice features that my dsm didn't have. A big part of me misses the raw power of my old car but its nice having a super reliable car.

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Went to cars and cafe this morning and all was well. Had a nice clean car and got to do my first real test and compare after leaving. Well on the way home my car started to make a funny noise at a light and then died while driving normally. Pulled over tore off the top timing cover to see a loose timing belt:scared: Then pull the valve cover while waiting for the tow truck to come and see all the exhaust rockers were out of place and pulled the plugs to see some not so good news. Once it was home and I had some lunch I started ripping the head off...

Some pretty intense carnage below, not 100% what happened yet. It has had 3k miles and about 3 weeks since I did the timing belt/cams and it made no strange noise during that time or anything that would make me think something is up. Also checked that the pin can still go into the tensioner after spinning the motor over and letting it sit for 20 minutes multiple times just to be sure. Now I'm kind of SOL

Onto the pictures:wedgie:

FUCK. Man, I was not expecting that after looking down into the spark plug holes. :(

From the limited pics, it looks like the head may be salvageable though??? Damn man, I've just been seriously sick to my stomach since this happened since we were both pounding on our cars just minutes earlier. Very easily could have been either of us.

Do you think you know what caused it yet?? bad tensioner? bad valve spring? did you do springs when you put the cams in?

What the hell is it with this year and EVO's?! Sorry to hear about this Brad. :( If you ever need an extra set of hands, let me know! Shit, if the belt is in good condition I'd say a probable cause could be a bad tensioner. Either way, I hate to see this happen to any of us!

C3L1CA 04-03-2011 01:06 AM

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Yea not 100% what caused it. Either a tensioner or my fuck up. Exhaust cam has a nice groove in it and looks like my turbo might be fucked too. Beer makes the world better?!

Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it!

Well, at least I wasn't the only Evo to dump on the way back from Cars and Coffee I guess (lol JP)...seriously though WTF, I just did this 1 year ago...my car has spent more time on a tow track then the road lately.

I feel your pain man, I hope you get it sorted out, it really sucks!

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Holy crap! That's way worse than mine was, sorry to hear it man. Hopefully your block and/or head are salvageable, cores for these things are not cheap. But look at it this way, here's your chance to go with a 2.3 or 2.4 and throw a real turbo on it. I've been putting mine together this weekend, but after seeing all the carnage recently, almost makes me want to sell it the minute it's together and get a Volvo. :D

Re: '03 BBY Evo

BRAD:
How many Evo timing belts had you done before doing your own?

As someone who personally is more familiar with DSMs, I had helped a friend do his Evo Timing belt. Did it exactly as you would a DSM, and didn't understand why the belt had too much slop in it. Realized, oops, The eccentric tensioner pulley GOES THE OPPOSITE way than on a DSM. I made that mistake, but caught it after scratching my head why the belt seemed a little loose. Could that be a possibility?

C3L1CA 04-04-2011 09:40 AM

Re: '03 BBY Evo

I've done zero evo timing belts but when it was put together the belt was not loose in the slightest and didn't make any strange noises for the 3 weeks I had been driving it and the close to 3k miles I put on it since doing the timing belt.

I also did the put the pin back in the tensioner after spinning the motor over and letting it sit 3 times to be sure there was the right tension on it. Who knows, probably my mess up at something but it just really blows.

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Yea it kinda sucks but I think I'll pull the motor tonight and see if the block and lower end are messed up beyond repair. If it doesn't look too bad I'll get a parts list over to Shane and see what the $ damage could be or buy a beater to get to work in and build it as I get the extra money. All I know is a need a car asap though as riding my motorcycle to work this morning in the rain and it being like high 30's wasn't fun.

I think I'll keep it though and make it a little more fun in the process. I missed the power of my 2g anyways but do like being able to turn, have 4 doors, heat/ac and most of all a radio. I didn't think this project thread would be updated very often, boy was I wrong. haha
