Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
You should start a project thread now since it's not a potential buy anymore.

I know there are three gears listed. And to help the tranny I am thinking of leaving gears one and probably two at the 17psi. And then just up gear three. Am I correct in thinking all I have to do then is just change the gear three settings? Also any idea how much to increase to get a psi? Or does it vary based on setups? Im not at home so can't review logs but I believe the 17psi is set at like 29 on the base duty cycle and when he was running 30psi I think the number was 56. might be a calculation there to get the nimber requires for each psi. |

Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Anyone know or have experience with "Godspeed radiators, fan shrouds, fan combo"?
There is a combo for sale in nc for $120 coming off a 1997 gsx part out on a tuners ad. My car only has one fan on it now. Doesnt over heat but coolant gets up to 223 when ever I stay in boost or cruise for long periods of time (ie. Drive home it would go from 216-223) most of the trip. Nothing im worried about just seemed like a decent deal and is by where im going to get interior parts |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Godspeed is the cheap Ebay parts slinger, but it might not be bad. You can probably get it new for that price though. :D
For pump gas, you don't need much for injectors, I'm running my 720's. I've got an extra set if you're interested. DON'T START PAINTING THE INTERIOR AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Lol the cloth is horrible Steve.. And out of the 200 dsm at this salvage yard he doesn't have most of the parts for black interior. Or I would buy it no questions asked.
As far as the radiator goes I know I bought my old fluidyne for I think $350 and the fans for another $100. However I had pusher fans not puller since I had removed the a/c in that car. The radiator and fans aren't necessary now just wasn't sure if it was a good product. They radiator alone is listed at $137 new on eBay but haven't checked the prices of the fan shroud with 2 fans. My initial idea for future build parts was to use all mishimoto stuff from map. |

http://www.maperformance.com/mishimo...e-adapter.html I also need to install an oil gauge. Owner said he replaced the sending unit but nothing changed on the dash so he was thinking the dash part itself isnt working. I know I had an autometer oil gauge that worked for like a month and then I never could get it to work again on my old car. This one has a forward facing filter housing and the turbo feed comes from it as well. I like the adapter plate as it sounds like it would make for a clean install if I ever wanted to add to it. Seems dumb but the aem gauge is because its the same style as my boost and wideband. And im ocd about looks/matching stuff. Any comments on the adapter and does anyone know of problems using it with a forward facing filter housing |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I would think your money could be spent better elsewhere. If it ain't broke...

That is a cheap price for a radiator/fan setup, just make sure the shroud is good, as that really determines how effective the fans are going to be for pullers. Oh, and hook them to the stock wiring and let the ECU control them, don't wire them on 100% or anything like that. Quote:

Why is the car at 17psi when it was just tuned for low 20's?? |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Asshanson - not sure on the boost issue was tuned in florida for 22psi. And while driving in florida ot read 21-22 on the gauge. Not sure what all would effect the boost to read 137-18psi now.
But I know outside temps, humidity, maybe altitude are all different here if they play a part? At least that's what I was thinking at least. Figured my tune is going to need adjusting anyways once I got here. I just wanted it setup for the trip home and once I get up to speed on v3 I was going to work on fine tuning the car. Just waiting for my laptop. He was supposed to ship it today but haven't checked my email. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Also as far as outside temps go here in sc. Its almost always in the 90's starting spring. Come summer temps are typically in the low 100's. Around aug-sept.
That radiator i mentioned above is set up for plug and play and read the fans are rated at 1250cfm each. I did get the 2nd oem fan with the car but i doubt it'll fit with the punishment o2 housing. |

I guess maybe you are worried about synchros, and not breaking the gears? Just be nice when shifting and low 20's should be no problem. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I took the car to work last night. And on the way home was finally able to do an honest pull.
Boost gauge reached 22psi but not till higher revs. Around like 6,000 But the wideband was reading 10.5 for most of the pull. I have never had a wideband before but I thought you want to the a/f to be around 12.1 correct? My laptop is suppose to arrive tomorrow. Im going to park the car today and wait till I have my laptop before I drive it again that way I can log a full pull. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Yeah, 10.5 is very rich. Does it read leaner at idle and cruise? I am just wondering if the sensor is still good or not.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
At cruise it swings around 14.5. Also when I let off the gas it goes off the charts the guage just shows three dashes
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
yeah 10.5 is quite rich, but if you've never really compared the cars wideband to say a lab grade one on a dyno, it could be 1 AFR off for all we know and be actually running at 11.5 which would be fairly solid.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
When in doubt, read the plugs.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Color on plugs should be... light grey right? And this car has the buscher cop set up. Which yet again I've never had experience with cop setups. Do you just unbolt the hole plate and lift up? Or how do you take them off?
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Ewwww... COP. I have never had first hand experience with one that worked good. I have experience with a half a dozen that didn't work, 2 that I tried myself. They always broke up under boost, just like you are talking about.

On boost it seems to run great. Its just the low throttle is harsh which like everyone is saying is common with large injectors. The car also has a dynatec ignition box |

One of these days ill have to get the nlts hooked up and set up as the previous owner didnt want due to the 47lb rims that are still on the car

Nope not a typo he said he weighed one of his rims with tirenamdnit was 47lbs. They have a good two-three in deep lip on them. They look good imo minus some curb rash. Originally I was like they have to go. But I might keep them for daily use then get a trackset. You can see in the picture I posted earlier. That the front tire has brake dust on it and it almost a looks gunmetal with a polished lip. And I really like that combo. There is a new powder coating place in town. Maybe tax season next year might put that on a list of possibilites |

This is on bp 93oct |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
47 actually isn't bad WITH tire. If it was 47 lbs wheel by itself it would be a different story! I think a stock Evo 8 wheel is about 20 lbs + a 25 lb tire would = 45 lbs.
What size are they? |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
they are 18x8 the offset is a bit much (not use what it is though) If i hit a bump hard enough they'll rub in the back.
There is a guy in town that does fender rolling I may do it at some point as its only like $15/per fender. But that is a long way off on my list of things to do. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
laptop just showed up so i'll have logs tonight on my way home from work.
Anything specific to log? |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
RPM, timing, knock, and AFR and boost if those sensors are hooked up to the ECU. Those are a good place to start. Is this on speed density or MAF? If it's on MAF, then logging airflow Hz isn't a bad idea too.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
It'd on sd.

Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Jet - i know you mentioned the wideband sensor could be going out. Which one os the replacement ?
Map has one for 85 and then a kit for like 95. But the pictures of the sensors aren't the same and the non kit one I dont believe has a part number for it. And I didnt see anything but Bosch sensor with the full gauge/harness aem wideband. I checked under the hood before work and the sensor on there has the black plug for the harness like the 95 dollar kit |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
I only mention the sensor because if they go out some what often then it might be best to have a spare
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
You have to get an AEM specific sensor for the UEGO.
Edit: after looking at their site, it's not clear whether the UEGO replacement sensor for $84 comes with the harness or not. You certainly don't need the SS bung that comes with the $97 one. I would call and ask if the cheaper one comes with the pigtail and black harness that you need. IIRC, each one is pre-calibrated so they should come with the harness. |

I also noticed in the logs your ECU is pulling a lot of fuel. like -20 combined fuel trim. Your global fuel is set to 60? I put 2200cc injectors in the calculator and it came up with -66 for global. you could try that and it should bring your fuel trims closer to 0. just remember a change in global will affect you air fuel ratio under boost. |
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Carl ill do a wot pull on my way home with the current settings and then ill load those settings.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Global set to 60 w/ 2200cc injectors? Either shit has changed drastically since I've used Link, or the dude got it tuned at the Waffle House.
|
Re: Potential Buy 1997 GSX
Ya I was wondering the same thing to be honest. I noticed that then I asked him to send me the tune for e85 he had and the settings were the same.
When you do the calculator that comes out to like 1150 or something and that's what he had before the 2200cc. I was wondering if they forgot to change the settings or he forgot to tell them. Or the injectors on the car aren't 2200. I never checked. I was going to adjust the global but I couldn't find the dead times for them so I never changed them |

ok got some logs tonight before the laptop died (left it on while at work) anyrate some wierd stuff happened also unfortunetly no logs when it did. first log i missed 4th gear causing knock. wide band reading 10.5-10.8 2nd log i started at like 2500rpms and it knocked enough to get my cel to trigger. (had never done a pull from that low rpm yet. wideband was reading 10.8 3rd pull cant remember if anything special happened. anyrate so wierd stuff. after these pulls i have like 15min of my trip left to get home and you can't speed due to cops, deer, etc. so doing the speedlimit. I get into town and i have to come to a stop sign and make a right. well when i went into neutral the car was idle surging and the wideband was swinging all over the place full lean full rich, I tapped the gas and settled down. went to get going and it started again and hte car started bucking really bad, quickly popped it inot nuetral (doing like 5mph now)... if it matters car had 1/8th of a tank of gas left.... anyrate put it into gear and tried again stuttered like normal when into 2nd gear and statted stuttering real bad almost like a blown i/c piping. for a spilt second. wide band once again swinging like crazy. tapped the gas and the wideband settled down and car went on like normal. no idle surge, wideband was runnign normal (from that stopsign to my house is like 1/4mile) pulled into the drive way all is well nothing weird, shut the car off no sounds of bubbling, etc just quite as can be. Oil's fine, coolant overflow is normal. couldnt find anything wrong. |
