Re: Project Lex
holy fook. thats a big ole chunk o' billet!
|
Re: Project Lex
Sucky on the trans. Why not just call them though? Or talk to JWT directly, emails can be too easily skipped over and are passive.
|
Re: Project Lex
Well I tried sending JWT an email, but it get sent right back from Mailer Demon. Guess their contact addy on their site is no good.
Yeah probably should just call them. |
Re: Project Lex
Talked with Collins, he plans on having the billet adapter setup ready to ship end of next week. So I got some time to get the trans out :)

Got the trans out. Took a total of probably 5hrs over the course of 3 days. The FFIM that I had put on made it a bitch because it hit the brake boost when I was trying to tilt the engine back to get at the last too bolts. So that delayed me a bit. That manifold is too f-ing big. I am going to look for something else, I really hate it and I don't want to put it back on. But none the less it's out.
The clutch disc looks like shit. Nothing was welded together, but it was stuck to the pressure plate where the center piece was falling apart and wrapping around the pressure plate clamping surface. Maybe that's what was causing the issue? But truthfully not the smoking gun I thought I was going to find. Anyway, gotta wait for the Collins kit to arrive. In the mean time I'm sourcing a new clutch setup and also a new intake manifold setup. I did get the new slave in for the new adapter, holy fook it's beefy! Also got my Megan rear lower control arms in. That should help me deal with camber and hopefully get a better footprint to help with traction. That's all for now, here's some pics! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459218579 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459218579 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459218579 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459218579 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459218579 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459218579 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459218579 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459218579 |
Re: Project Lex
I don't remember what exactly your clutch problems were, but that disc is fubar'd. And like the issue. Cant tell from the pics, is it warped at all?
|
Re: Project Lex
fuckery, i was gonna swing by tonight too.
Let me know when you go out there I can always swing by on my way home for work. |
Re: Project Lex
Momin, the problem is basically the clutch wouldn't disengage anymore. You pressed the clutch pedal, it felt normal, but it just didn't actually disengage. So like if you had the car off, put it in 1st gear, pressed the clutch and started the car, it would lurch forward as you're cranking it because it's not disengaged. Maybe you're right though, it does seem a bit warped so maybe that was wedging it in there just enough that it wouldn't disengage.
Brownman, fuck yeah come over! The past several days I've been trying to get the CF hood on, but soon as I can get the wife out to help me Leo starts crying and that's that. Will literally take 15 minutes but I just need an extra set of hands!! |
Re: Project Lex
What brand clutch is that? Southbend?
|
Re: Project Lex
It's hard to tell from pics, but is the disc edge totally fubar'd? If so, that's fubar.
Seems like you have the situation under control though with a new clutch and trans adapter or bellhousing on the way, good luck this year! |
Re: Project Lex
It's a JWT clutch for a 350z.
Yeah the edges are nasty, what even would cause something like that? |
Re: Project Lex
Was the inspection plate on? Maybe something fell in there?. Some rivets pop off?
|
Re: Project Lex
Yes it was, and also it's not really useful anymore because of the whole adaption, things aren't as they were intended. There really is no way to use the inspection cover anymore with the swap.
|
Re: Project Lex
That disc is just falling apart, weird. Well hopefully a new clutch solves all the issues!
|
Re: Project Lex
Is the pilot bearing still okay? Maybe something got jarred to cause the outer ring of the disc to catch something. Probably excessive heat or something and warped the whole thing.
|
Re: Project Lex
Yeah I'm not really sure. You can see what I can see, I don't really know anything more than that. I think excessive heat is a likely contributor, especially considering it finally let go at the track after launching which involved a little bit of slipping / dumping the clutch.
|
Re: Project Lex
I can stop by as well. Can help with the hood, and would like to see the disc and pressure plate. I'm guessing the distortion of the disc (and friction discs on the disc) is likely the issue. It doesn't take much variance in thickness(including overall "thickness" caused by warping..) of the disc or cut of a flywheel for a setup to hangup or not fully disengage.
The heat spots on the pressure plate indicates this thing isn't disengaging, combined with your last day at the track.. |
Re: Project Lex
Sure feel free to swing by some day. Hit me up on my phone, because I usually only have certain windows that work. Winding down the kids for bedtime is a bad time for example, lol.
|
Re: Project Lex
lol, don't worry jigga I know about that.
|
Re: Project Lex
Put the clutch disk on the pressure plate. It should lay nice and flat when your press one side to the other side. How is the input shaft on the transmission? Can you see what else rubbed on the clutch disk?

Some minor updates. Got my gauge cluster back from Tanin. Looks phenominal. So good I removed the climate control and will be sending that to them as well so they can update it to match.
AEM should be mailed to me today. Also, bought a new intake manifold setup that should fit way better, and not be such a big frigging plenum since it seems way overkill for my power levels. Should be here in 2-3 weeks, excited about that! Here's a comparison of the one I just took off, to one of the new ones under construction (not actually mine, but similar, mine will have a slightly different angle for the TB flange). http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459777202 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459777419 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1459777419 |
Re: Project Lex
Looks good! What did they do to the gauge cluster though?
|
Re: Project Lex
The back lighting is all white LED now, compared to 90's style yellowish-greenish-white back lighting. If you look at the odometer, they didn't touch that, so good comparison of seeing the old color to the new color. Just makes it look a lot more modern if you see it in person.
And 2 of the needles were completely burnt out (gas and temp needles), and the tach needle was starting to show signs of dying as well. The cluster is basically pitch black, so you need it to be lit up, even in the day time, to see anything. So those needles being burnt out were kind of annoying. Each of those needles has something like 10 LED's in them, so it's actually pretty expensive to fix. So what they offer is just their "fire tip" option. So instead of paying for 10 LED's in a needle, they just install 1 LED at the tip, so just the tip is lit. So they did that to all the needles with red LED's. And they let you custom pick whatever color LED you want. I just went with white and red as I thought it was a simple and clean look. |
Re: Project Lex
Man I can't wait to see that new cluster looks great!
|
Re: Project Lex
You should get a video of the gauges in action

Re: Project Lex
$$$$ ballin tooning!
|
Re: Project Lex
Yeah that is ballin tuning for sure, have heard great things about the infinity! Good choice
|
Re: Project Lex
Yeah, I need to send a cluster off to Jason as well. Even thought about doing the Tahoe since he does some cool color changes on them as well.
|
Re: Project Lex
oooh can bus gauge, nice doood
|
Re: Project Lex
Climate Control back from Tanin. LED converted. White back-lit screen to match white backlighting on the gauges. buttons converted to red matching the fire tip needles. Big thanks to them putting in extra effort to make sure I was good to go on this.

Nice!

Re: Project Lex
Been awhile since I've updated this. Not a ton to update. But I ordered the Collins new A340 CD009 adapter kit. I'll be running his custom flywheels with a single disc clutch which should hold my power goals. Just waiting on that to arrive and I can start getting the trans back in.
Waiting on the new intake manifold to arrive as well. Once it arrives, I'm going to be taking it, and a bunch of other bits, in to get powder coated. I got my spare set of 92 style valve covers here. I did Ali's mod where I have two large breathers on top now (1/2 NPT to 5/8" Barb). I will be sending in these covers to get powder coated. http://www.clublexus.com/forums/atta...526_091618.jpg I'll also be bringing in my fuel rail, compressor cover, and turbo intake pipe, to all get powder coated. I'm horrible at color coordinating so I'm struggling to decide what I want. I'm leaning towards a fine textured matte black on most of them for that clean, subtle, almost OEM look. http://www.thepowdercoatstore.com/im...BY-800x800.jpg But I also want there to be some contrast or color going on. So I'm thinking of doing a couple of the pieces in something like say a satin/anodized aluminum color to again just keep it simple and clean. http://www.glaro-products.com/images...eceptacles.jpg https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...e3f57d8f84.jpg https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...9b386286c2.jpg Or maybe some kind of satin bronze to add a little color: http://www.powderkegcoatings.com/wp-...tonebronze.jpg http://www.snailmotorsports.com/uplo...nze_chrome.jpg Also working on switching up my crazy shifter situation with some ideas that other SC guys have come up with. Basically using a 240sx shifter, modified to work with this setup. From what I gather it's fairly short throws, and the shifter will end up very close to the stock location. It requires hacking up the stock bronze shifter linkage. So instead of doing that, looking at making a custom adapter out of some billet aluminum instead with another locals help :) Here's sort of how it looks (pic taken from someone else's setup he was doing a little R&D on, with the stock brass piece cut up). Seems simple and functional. And I'll just be making this other piece to maybe try and make it a hair more secure https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U...2/IMG_3952.JPG And a pic of the piece we are working on. The final piece may look a hair different, but a general idea of it. http://www.clublexus.com/forums/atta...1&d=1464275043 That's really it for now. Just waiting on parts mostly. |
Re: Project Lex
Sweet, love the custom stuff! Takes time but it will be nice when its done.
