ha, no. Never met the guy. Bought an oil line kit from him in like 2002... and had a sticker sitting around :)

Re: My ChumpCar experience

You know the lights have to be removed for Road America, right? We are confident in our car, not like we're racing for millions of dollars to warrant an engine swap at the track.

Our car made it to Jeff the Alignment Guy this morning only to find out it had a bad left front tie rod end and a bad right rear ball joint. We sourced the parts during the day, Shawn picked them up this afternoon, brought the car back and fixed it up tonight. It'll head back to Jeff on Wednesday. Patched up a couple other minor things but it's pretty much ready to go.

Yeah, lights come off quick with 2 big arse bolts, but we've had them on for some night/early morning driving we've had to do, and testing and whatnot.

For us, the spare engine isn't so much about winning (cause you definitely can't win after being out of the race long enough to swap the engine). We just want to maximize fun and driving time! And this year we've actually tested our spare engine.

Man, I wish I was going. Good luck to all you guys and be safe. I have to get into this sooner then later.

Removing and installing an engine in an MR2 is not fun.

Just enough time for a B18C5 swap.

Re: My ChumpCar experience

The email all the teams were sent this afternoon:
Quote:

To: Road America Team Captains, Volunteers and Vendors

I sincerely regret to inform you that we will have to reschedule this weekend’s event due to weather. Road America notified ChumpCar today that weather conditions worsened unexpectedly overnight and left everything covered in ice. The concern now is that even after clearing, the forecasted highs have dropped to well below freezing and another chance of snow was inserted for Saturday. The result is that Road America management does not want to risk what could be poor track and paddock conditions that could become impossible to mitigate before and during the weekend, as even the melted ice would re-freeze. If it were just snow or the forecast temps stayed above freezing it would be a different story, but just too many things have come together since yesterday that make it too risky and we’d rather make the call now than to have people show up and not be able to get on the track.

ChumpCar shares those concerns, the one thing we value above friends and low cost, no hassle endurance racing is safety. Not just at the track, but traveling to the track, as well as the safety of family, crew and spectators while there.

I apologize for the late notice especially in light of ChumpCar’s insistence that we would not let weather get in the way. We and the track Management held out until the very last minute to make sure we made the right call, and could still get the news to you in time to re-arrange schedules.

The good news is that you will not have to wait long to get on the track. RA has cleared April 2-3 for us, which is next weekend. The weather forecast is for a warming trend with highs in the mid-40s next week which gives the track time to recover. With a little luck we will have highs in the 50’s again by next weekend.

Again, we apologize. Having already made travel reservations, secured vendors and shipped our entire race package up to WI, we understand the inconveience and can empathize with you! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Joey Todd
ChumpCar World Series

They should go to whatever email address is used by whoever signs the team up for the event.

Random question: what is the cheapest/crappiest FWD shell you can easily swap a 4G63 into? We should do a mitsustyle collaborative chumpcar next year. That'd rock.

Shane@DBPerformance 03-25-2011 01:16 PM

Re: My ChumpCar experience

We just cut up a TOTALLY stripped, caged, sheetmetalled, lexaned 1G FWD shell with a sawzall and threw it in the dumpster a few months ago.

Here is a vid of a 24 Hours of Lemons FWD Mirage with a 4G63 NT in it:

MAP did it, not for this type of racing though.

I don't know anything about nitrous...thought it was more flammable than that.

Nitrous oxide is an oxidizer, it is not flammable.

Nah, you can hold a lighter at the end of a nitrous bottle while you're spraying and it wouldn't ignite. Not recommending that someone try this, just sayin haha

Why don't you try that and let us know how hot that little lighter flame gets.

I have. It just blew the flame out lol

There you go. I gotta think, there's enough knowledge and random parts sitting in people's garages that this board could put together a pretty bang on car.

I wonder how bad a starion with 4g63 would get penalized....

Or heck, one of the mitsubishi trucks! Or even just convert a transverse engine mounted Colt into RWD.

ok, this race needs to happen. I keep finding things to spend money on, and it keeps leaving my bank account! ARG! (mind you, stuff that doesn't count towards the budget - new jack, gauges, different brake pads... etc)

Matt, what pads are you guys running? We're gonna try out HT-10s in the front with HP+s in the rear. I like the fact we have a test day to try things out now.

We also got a RA driving coach :D

EBC Red Stuff all around. The front wheels lock up very easy, the only time any of us ever got out of control in a braking zone was at Iowa, I went into the hairpin off the back straight and was still trying to slow down, ended up spinning out into the cones.

Re: My ChumpCar experience

s1ngletracker and Shane, we are in garage 1, can't remember if I told you that it changed when the race was postponed. We are planning on arriving around noon tomorrow to get some practice in, leaving town around 6am from Rosemount.

We will have basic hand tools, electric impact and that's about it. I don't think anyone on our team has an air compressor small enough to bring along.

Day one at Road America is done, Slugworks finished 8th which is pretty awesome. We were somewhere in the teens after dealing with some slight technical issues. Gotta do an oil change and front brake pads tonight then we are good to go for Sunday.

I can't say enough about how awesome this track is. After watching Indycar and sportscar races on TV of this place since I was a kid it's still a bit strange to realize im actually racing here.

We were pretty happy with saturday. Great job yesterday Shake n' bake! you guys are awesome drivers in the rain. We just had to make sure to not put our car into a barrier, success! We live to battle at Iowa. Our car needs some tweaks before then (I gotta get full boost to happen before like 5000 rpm, gosh), and we are definitely learning that spending a bit more on tires may just be worth it.

You guys were consistent on Saturday and it was proof. Short pit stops and keeping the car on the track is key to being in the top 10. We had a couple issues on Saturday, probably spent 45 minutes in the pits overall.

I was very fast at BIR last year when it rained late in the day on Sunday compared to the other cars, so they wanted me to go out first on Sunday at Road America since it was raining. The only car that was faster than us early on was the #66 Integra because they were running snow tires, but that is a story for another day. When I got out of the car we were in 2nd, and were in the top 3 all day. The last hour and a half of the race we were neck and neck with the yellow Impreza. Dustin was driving and he said they were passing each other 2 to 3 times a lap over the last hour. Then seeing him come out from behind the Impreza just as they came over the crest at the start/finish line was amazing. 7 hours of racing only to be bumper to bumper with the car ahead of you at the end is just crazy.

I would have to say it is. I was very comfortable in the car on Saturday when it was dry and pushed the car very hard. I didn't practice the bend though, a left-right chicane just before the kink, so the first time I saw that was my first lap on the track. I will go back into iRacing this week and see what I turn for lap times.

Apparently it was down on power and stuck in 4th gear or someshit. I don't know, it really seemed to depend on who was driving it. It didn't pass me all weekend, but it did pass Shawn in the rain on Sunday. It was not a contender though.
