Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Possibly next weekend if you need a hand with anything, this weekend I am busy.
Glad to hear your close, that's bomb man! |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Hopefully tomorrow I can/will put some time in, I'm planning on helping out a local tomorrow.
Word is i get friday off of work, if thats the case then I plan on pulling a 9-5 deal on my car to get it done for saturday assuming I have everything I need by then Jacks said will get the diff sent out tuesday but I don't think it will get here in time. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
I'm goona install my TCU again this weekend, so I'll get a little more testing in on the TCU code.
|
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Got my TCU back from the link guys, easily the best non-local service ever.
I received constant email updates from them, when they received it, were inspecting, wanted payment and when they shipped it back. Jack's however has been the opposite, I can't get anyone on the phone, my emails are answered well whenever they feel like I guess. They have had my Diff. since last tuesday it was supposed to be back in my hands by now so that I can put the car together tomorrow night, but well who knows at this point. Apparently if you aren't spending $1k+ with them then you don't really matter even if your service doesn't take that long. I'm gonna keep the 3-bolt in the car for a while longer, tomorrow night I'll be putting my old stereo back in, TCU back in teh car and a bunch of other random stuff to get the car running, who knows maybe a sweet center diff. will show up. Anyone/everyone is welcome to stop by, you don't have to help you can just drink/eat and laugh at me while I work. I'll have the heat on. I'd like to make the BIR street drags on teh 4th. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Sucks about Jack's. I had the same poor communication issue with them. Dogbox on the other hand, they were great and will be the first guys I call if I ever need tranny work done again.
If I wasn't out of town, I'd be there giving you a hand. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
So I called Jacks and left a message earlier, they emailed me back and said "sadly it shipped out today, you should automatically get a tracking number"
Even that response is shit, no sorry and no effort to do work and copy and paste the tracking number into the message. I just hope their work is something to have no complaints about. This means time to enjoy my friday night in a diff. way. |

That sucks that they've kinda put you on the back burner. I hope this was just a one time fluke in customer service. At least it's on the way? |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
yeah its on the way, but FedEx didn't show an expected delivery.
I'll probably throw on the heater and work slowly tonight until something else comes up. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Ok, FedEx showed today that it will be here on wed. hopefully i get home and the weather is good that day to finish up the car.
I'm going to spend today outside since I haven't the last few times, its actually warm enough for me to go out there now. Now I have to decide on a wideband, I thought I narrowed it down to the NGK, but the display is big and bulky and in the way of everything. It will also go against the stock looking interior I have. I'm starting to think I should just use the AEM since that is what everyone seems to be having success with and even a lot of shop cars use them: MAP, Bushnuts, other cars I can't think of right now. If anyone else isn't doing easter stuff today you are more than welcome to stop by. I promise pics on teh next update, i know it sucks reading this crap. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
How about that cheap wideband setup I got from MAP that looks similar to the Pro Sport gauges?
|
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
I know I'm not supposed to post without pics, but I'll answer your question.
I'm gonna go with 2, dual digital gauges. one will be oil psi & water temp in teh stock water temp location and the other will be Fuel Psi & voltage I think in the stock oil psi location. I will go with the NGK and set it on top of the steering column like I did last time, not 100% happy with that location, but I love having information on teh car and its the number 1 thing I watch. Got the oil pan back on today and axles nuts off, tomorrow will be pulling the axle day and maybe installing new seals. I'm going to attack this bitch for an hour each day. Oil pan goodness, tapped the 2 stripped holes, one was good the other still bad, just not as bad as before. http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3242725_n.jpg |

Ok, now thats sorted to the update! with pics!! So I finally got off my ass and went outside on sunday, not saturday or friday like i was saying I would, I needed that 60F day. I installed my fuel pump, fighting shitty phillips screws the whole way I don't see why they didn't just use hex bolts or allen head bolts. After making a trip after work to the hardware store I found a screw, but it had to be cut down to be the correct length. http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2080945_n.jpg I was going to use it for the fuel pump bracket that holds the fuel pump from the bottom. I forgot about this: http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5887493_n.jpg The grounding point for the pump in the assembly as you can tell it was fun trying to unscrew that, but now I'm short a screw! Well almost, so that civic I just got I pulled the stereo out of and these were the screws holding the stereo in. They are the perfect pitch and length, plus they are a hex/phillips head so it should make for easy R&R. Turns out I have about 4-5 of these! Oh well I learned that I need to dig thru my drawer of hardware before i make trips out and waste money, well kinda just more stuff for the hardware drawer. http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6216278_n.jpg So I did the most awesome install on the fuel pump, it included the stock sleeve over the power wire and the grommet covering the positive stud in the fuel pump assembly. I was really quite proud of myself considering I haven't done one in years and it was really clean. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...72_45770_n.jpg That picture was to show how awesome I am at remembering the camera. :stooges: Yes I did not get one single pic of the pump installed in the unit and out of the car so we could see it. On that note, I want to say I appreciate the interest in this thread I thoroughly enjoy reading about other peoples projects and I'm not really the person that likes this attention stuff, but between wanting to keep a record for myself and you all that I consider friends chiming in, it makes me want to keep going and do an even better job keeping a log on this. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
So got an email while I was at work today, well 2 actually.
1st from fedex, my diff was delivered!! http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5179389_n.jpg 2nd, doesn't get a pic but was from the company supplying 2 gauges for me. If you go back a few pages, you will see where I installed the LC1 (boo!) Scratch that, apparently I don't have one. Anywho, i took out the stock water temp gauge and had the LC1 in there perfectly, I will be replacing that with a dual oil psi and water temp gauge and replacing the stock oil psi gauge with a fuel pressure and voltage dual gauge. I updated my post from sunday with a pic. Now for some welded diff. goodness courtesy of Jacks Transmissions. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7492661_n.jpg http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5936346_n.jpg http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2562446_n.jpg http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2598926_n.jpg |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
I hope that diff last dude!! Looks like they only tached each tooth on it?? What's up with that??
|
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Turn on the macro feature on your camera and use more light, sheesh. If it was just welded, I know a guy with a welder who could have done it for next to nothing.
|
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
The auto diff. is different and I doubt he would do it for next to nothing.
Also i was just snapping quick pics the first pic of the welds is money I think, the others is just for info. Taking another night off tonight, spend some time with the lady and relax. Tomorrow or friday I'll continue, with everything here I should be able to have it running friday night or at least sunday. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Looking good BB.

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Get that thing out on the street!
|
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Im sure Jack welds it pretty well, not using too much heat, heating up the spiders and drive gear of the center, causing weakness.

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Spent about an hour soldering the stereo harness together last night, tonight is the night hopefully.
I heard some people will be stopping by, I don't have beer but I'll be starting the night with a full bottle of vodka. |

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
lol, i called it quits a little after 9.
I made good progress, changed out axle seals, put center diff back in, got a lot of tools put away. Today, I have to install my shift kit and then re-install the valve body into the trans, install new (used) T-case, DP, intake, gauge cluster, stereo, oh and plug in my TCU. Then I should be driving around!! |

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Worked on it a little, busy day running around today.
Got the T-case & DP on, valve cover on. I need to install the shift kit tomorrow and then its intake and interior then go time hopefully. I'm going to watch some UFC with a good friend tonight. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Well I've been outside for about 6 hrs today, usually I've done all kinds of stuff in a time period like this, but today it was slow going.
I installed the shift kit and that's about it. Lots of springs and such was getting a little excited to be done, got the new trans filter bolted in and then wouldn't you know the knowledgeable folks at my local parts store sold me the wrong pan gasket. Awesome, they will have a fel-pro tomorrow but I work 12 hrs at least and don't know if I'll make it up here before 9pm when they close or have power to put it on. Still have interior stuff, intake pipe & MAS to install, then fill fluids and test drive. Ordered my gauges today, so thats cool. With all the money I've spent and hopefully school starting next month I should be done for the year. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Its Alive!!.
well it has been since tuesday but I fucked up and did not put the shifter assembly back into the manual valve so I had to drop the pan again and valve body and put that together, more of a PITA than anything. Car drives great, even better with teh modded TCU chip. A big thanks for JRohner on that, I want to say a remarkable member of our community makes me good to see there are still great people around and joining us. I know I should have pics, but i promise this weekend. Also my new gauges came in today and I will be installing those tomorrow (hopefully) along with my NGK wideband that i need to pick up from MAP. Car is a dream to drive really comfy the steering is super light, welded diff is fun. I'm eager to hit some track days soon, like now. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

There's a BIR Track day (well, the performance driving school) May 23rd, we will be there!

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Well I'm not sure where i left off, but I know I haven't updated with pics for a while so I'm going update some past posts with pics here and then keep going with what is current.
Studs in block to prevent stripping threads in block, also feels tighter. 4/26/11 http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3242725_n.jpg Valve body out to install shift kit. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5688636_n.jpg Auxillary valve body: http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4314851_n.jpg The awesome maze that is a valve body: http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7216882_n.jpg Springs under tension in upper valve body (not fun): http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...63_41122_n.jpg Napa gave me the wrong pan gasket (I wasn't happy): http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5737500_n.jpg Parking Pawl, make sure that it goes into the manual valve or it will make you fill a diaper on startup, not to mention waste time and fluid and patience. http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7679319_n.jpg Yay, back on the ground. 4x4 status!! http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4767786_n.jpg Draining old e85. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1873529_n.jpg Cooler got to about 2 inches from the top. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1422194_n.jpg Almost done: http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4607498_n.jpg Interior for about 2 days: http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6535120_n.jpg Begin of gauge install: http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7748748_n.jpg I took a pic of these wires because if you have owned a 1G you know how these suck, they aren't terrible but could be better. I plan to extend these like I did on my old car, it made pulling the cluster a ton easier. http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4690408_n.jpg Installing gauges: http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6309351_n.jpg 90% finished product: http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7959978_n.jpg Not fun: http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4842348_n.jpg Well that's all the pics I have, I'll have to upload the new ones I have. After dyno day I went out with the car and launched at about 28psi and broke the rear driver's axle in the rear end. The following week I pulled the rear end with the help of some friends, found the new rear end was missing bolts and something else so I decided to pull the whole rear subframe, its sat untouched until tonight where I finished putting in poly bushings in the rear mustache bar and then decided to say F that to the rest of it till winter when I hopefully have more time and money. I also installed solid driveshaft carrier bushings and I filled the driveshaft carrier bearings (1st time ever in 7 DSMs!) So we will see how that goes. Thankfully I had Mo right there when I was filling the bearings and he gave me the how to, pretty simple but def. was easier with him there. Thank you. I'll try and update soon with more pics and such, car should be together tomorrow. |
Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.
Awesome job on the gauges Aaron.
Do you look at the ones where the heater / fan stuff was while driving? |
