Well just drove her home, and she's safe and sound back here in the garage. Will continue with some finishing touches tomorrow morning bright and early!

Thanks again Momin for the hard work you put in.

Lets see some pics / videos of the exhaust work / sound.

Took her our for a quick spin today. Boost controller wasn't working quite right. Hit 30 psi and blew an intercooler pipe off. I need that whole thing just re-made because it fits like shit. Otherwise so far so good!

Re: My Winter Upgrades

Boost controller is working fine now. Starting to get her dialed in at 20psi for starters. Hope to have a video up to show how the new exhaust sounds. I was hoping it'd be a little bit quieter, but what do ya do. It still turned out great I think!

Re: My Winter Upgrades

Well with the old PTE, there was a fitting on the compressor housing to hook the boost controller up to. Not on the BW. So I know people have hooked up boost gauges to the "P" port on their TB's before, so I tried just using that as the pressure source just for the drive home. That didn't work too well because I was hitting 30psi with only a 1 bar spring installed in the WG. I'm now just Tee'd into the BOV line and it's working much better. I do plan on installed a fitting into the lower IC pipe though and use that as the pressure source later on.

Re: My Winter Upgrades

You can always just drill and tap the compressor housing to get your pressure source there. I had to do that with my turbo.

Thanks, and my pleasure.

But not sure it could get much quieter with everything being straight through.. it has the 18" Vibrant resonator, and a decent size muffler. But I do like the way everything laid out.

Halon 06-03-2008 07:45 PM

Re: My Winter Upgrades

Yeah, I think you did as much as you could to keep it as quiet as possible without going to some kind of chambered muffler. It turned out great, no complaints. Let me know how much I still owe you, and I'll wire it right away.

Big thanks to LB for mounting the tires on the rims today! Got all 4 rims mounted. Can't take a picture until Derek comes home with the camera.

Also put the old 1G TB back on because the NT one needs new seals. Boost was leaking past pretty bad. I have the new seals, and will be rebuilding it in my spare time. For anyone else who needs these seals, cost me $8 total out the door for both seals at NAPA.

Re: My Winter Upgrades

For those who saw my car yesterday and were interested in that nylon braided hose, here's how to find it.

The fuel line I made is using Earl's Pro-Lite 350 nylon braided hose. It is NHRA legal for fuel use, and is rated for up to 350psi. To save a few bucks, Jegs has their own nylon braided stuff as well that is more then likely identical to the Earl's, and it's also NHRA legal according to their sales rep.

The nylon braided stuff I have for my vacuum lines is from McMaster-Carr. I do not believe it is NHRA legal for fuel use though. You can find it by going to:
www.mcmaster.com : Type in p/n: 5394k and then click on the Buna-N link on the left. It'll end up being the 2nd to last product on that catalog page. 3/8" hose fits pretty well on the PCV and the side fitting on the valve cover.

Good choice! I have the III's on my Evo and love them so far! I had the II's on my DSM and was very impressed with those too.

The info is on Vfaq. Here's a direct link to the Vfaq.

http://www.ca.dsm.org/faq/tb-shaftseals.html

quoted from the vfaq:
As an aside, Craig Berndt did some looking and has found a place where one can obtain the seals. I was purchasing them from a local supplier in my area, but wasn't sure whose make they were, only that they worked. Craig says that they are available from Chicago Rawhide, part # 3930 CR 10x14x3 HM4 R. He also has suggested using www.kamandirect.com as a source to purchase them.

Steve Piette also emailed to say that NAPA can get them as well, using the above CR part number.

I was out of town all weekend at the lake cabin man. I also have a wedding this weekend, but I'll let you know if I'm out and about.

And the 3/8" comes in 5' lengths. That's what I bought.

I don't have a camera right now, so here's just a crappy cell phone picture of what I've been up to today. I got the stock IM off, and put in the JMF one. Good thing I have skinney arms, because it was tricky getting that stocker off with the head still on the car.

I also put the new shaft seals in the NT TB. Those seals were a frigging TIGHT fit. But it seems to work fine so far. We'll see for sure once I can boost leak test the system. I also reinstalled the FIAV/ISC stuff back onto the TB to hopefully help with my idle slightly. I blocked off the FIAV portion of it though.

Now really just need to rework the UICP and I should be good to go.

The pic shows the new manifold in. Also shows the JMF catch can installed, with the nice braided vacuum hose. I'm heading out right now to cut the line from the Can to the SMIM, and install one of my $2 check valves.

Re: My Winter Upgrades

Well some of you heard it start up for the first time after the SMIM install on Saturday. She didn't want to idle all that well, but it did kinda. Guess I wasn't meant to work on these things wasted.

Anyhow, spent a little time today. Got the TPS volts down to where they should be. They were at .5x when I first went out there this morning. Went to Checker and bought some radiator hose for who knows what, but it worked perfect for my BOV recirc. Not having that hooked was another reason I was idling like trash Saturday.

Anyhow, she's idling like a champ now right at ~1000rpm. When I turn on the A/C it drops to around 650, but she doesn't die so that's fine. Here's a little clip showing her at idle.

Where did you find that model to start your car and rev it? You hold the camera so steady too!

Sounds nice, I can't wait to get another ride now that it's all upgraded.

Mine were mint, and obvious B man got it down too.

I don't think their impossible to idle, but getting the dam car to start is another thing.

With E85 and 1600's I have to crank the car over for a good minute (cycling the starter) before it starts. It will fire once then next time it will fire a couple times, then a few more, and finally it starts. I haven't even driven my Talon in over a month because its such a pain.

Re: My Winter Upgrades

Wierd. Maybe an issue with your fuel pressure? Might starts like you saw in the video. When it's cold, I have to hold the pedal down for maybe 10 seconds to keep it from dieing, other then that, no issues at all.

Halon 07-02-2008 11:57 PM

Re: My Winter Upgrades

Yesterday I got a lot of tuning done on the car. It was running real strong. I had it dialed in somewhat decent at around 26psi, but cranked it up to around 30 on my way home from Porky's, and it felt ridiculous! I definitely have reached the limit of my clutch though. I have the new one waiting here to be installed, but don't want to put it in until I get a new tranny.

So today I called up TRE today and talked to Jon. Seemed like a nice guy and was very helpful, so I purchased a tranny. He'll be shipping that out to me tomorrow. I hope to put that in along with the new clutch sometime this month.

Finished making my boost leak tester today also, and found a few boost leaks. Major one at the BOV flange, and some smaller ones at a couple welds. So the car is back down until I get that all situated.

God damn that must feel god getting it closer and closer to whoopin' ass out there! Come on, give us some vids man! Somethings better than nothing.
:seeya:

Jon @ TRE does kick ass with helping people out, when I first got my DSM I called him up to talk about trans choices and what-not, he helped me figure out something relatively cheap and strong. Then when going to install it I had some questions, so my noob-ass called him up and he was more than happy to help me out, he didn't sound like a pissed off dude trying to hurry and get me off the phone, he helped me every bit of the way and also through in some FYI's on whats where and shit. Great guy! Glad you chose to do business with TRE.

When I lived out West, everyone swore by RRE and TRE, so I've always had a good impression of them in the back of my mind. They have some good deals right now too. Dogbox quit replying to my emails, so it was an easy choice for me.

And I did give you a vid, an idle vid :)

Got the new drivers door trim piece in the mail to replace the one that flew off on the freeway a few weeks back. I will be taking it and the front bumper in for some paint one of these days.

Also fixed a bunch of the boost leaks. It's still not 100% sealed, but damn close.

Also got the radiator air scoop done using some misc aluminum I acquired. I'll put up some pics when I get a camera to use.

Waiting on a new boost gauge from MAP. SW 30-0-40 white faced.

Halon 07-14-2008 09:29 PM

Re: My Winter Upgrades

Got the new boost gauge installed while I was up at the cabin this weekend. Looks/works great.

Also thought that I'd mention that I got 20miles/gallon to and from the cabin. That's the best milage I have gotten since I switched to E85 last year. It was all on the highway with no stop n go traffic, averaging about 75mph, with the cruise control on, with only a minnimal amount of "spirited driving". I was real happy when I calculated that!

TRE Tranny showed up in the mail today. First impression is that it's the cleanest 1G tranny I've ever owned. And the packaging was excellent!! Now if I just had a day or 2 to put it in...
