Iowa: Fuggin' epic.
CarRacer finished the race in a cloud of blue smoke, LOL! So did we, after a 5 hour hiatus :\ |

Re: ChumpCar Racing
Slugworks was really fast there. That thing cooked once it hit boost.
We were stupid slow whenever we weren't turning. We *barely* finished too, that motor was hurt when we finished as evidenced by the aforementioned smoke screen. It was a fun race again, although I doubt we will make the twin 7 races at BIR while we search for a more potent engine to power the shitbox. |
Re: ChumpCar Racing
True, that track loved the car, or maybe it was the other way around. Shane, I dont think I got video of your crash.

Re: ChumpCar Racing
A Ford 2.3l motor we were looking at as a swap candidate fell through so I got curious as I was pulling the motor out of the Galant. The Chevette engine bay has more room than I thought it did.

Some pics from today's race. This is my buddies teams E30. It was their first time ever doing this. The car lasted all 7hrs with no real problems which is a great accomplishment for them! I think they placed 14th or so. Was a great time! I'd love to start a team for something like this, if only I had time to devote to it which I currently don't :( Good seeing Matt D's team kick some butt. The Slugworks guys did pretty deng good too, they were up in the front of the pack most of the time!
Here's some of my crappy pics: Friday night boozin and bon-fire! Matt D and Emily came over to chill with us! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 We were right next to the Slugworks guys in the pits! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 The sweet E30! I think they got this thing for around $300. From what I heard, it was in rough shape when they got it. They've spent the past several months getting it ready and man it turned out spectacular I think! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 Go Time! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 Hot on Shake N Bakes tail!!! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 My buddy Derek tearin it up! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1307237218 |
Re: ChumpCar Racing
That bmw looks pimp, i like the work inside the car.

Re: ChumpCar Racing
Man, I wish I had the time to do this. I think a FWD DSM would be the way to go considering I can build a motor for one with my hands tied behind my back and stripped down, they don't weigh much. Plus parts are cheap and plentiful. I've never had a lot of issues with reliability, it's one of the best built factory drivetrains out there as long as you take care of it.

Re: ChumpCar Racing
I think a N/A 4G63 powered (insert a light vehicle here) would be very cool.

Re: ChumpCar Racing
You guys are the winners in my book. All of those BMWs are boring and make it too easy to win. It takes far more skill and talent to make something else perform. I was following the updates online and you guys were laying down quick times all day on both days.
Congrats on the awesome finishes. |

Yeah you guys were flying Matt. Great job! Keep in mind my buddies E30 team were all newbs to this, so they weren't going to be much of a threat. They were there for the fun and experience, and I think they had a blast!

Re: ChumpCar Racing
Yeah, Derrick seemed pretty excited even with all the problems they had. It's definitely a bummer, but they all got seat time so that's what matters the most. It took us a couple events to find all the weak links in our car, so they aren't in the clear yet.

Re: ChumpCar Racing
Thanks for all the kind words guys, the MR2 is like bringing a knife to gun fight against the BMW's. We are so happy to get on the poduim, everyone was cheering for us to win on Sunday. We were so close.
I think our weekend could be summed up by the drive home when we were passed on 94 by the chumpcar crew in a rental car and they put up the sign "Got Gas?" in the window for us to see.. Doah! |
Re: ChumpCar Racing
LOL Shawn, that is awesome. I think we've made our mark on Chump Car. :)

Re: ChumpCar Racing
We broke on Saturday, passenger side front wheel hub/axle sheared off. The only thing left holding the wheel on was the brake caliper around the rotor. We quickly found out early on Sat morning that we had no chance of getting a podium finish due to our fuel consumption and small gas tank. If we ran at normal power levels we would have to pit for fuel 2 times more than the teams that would end up winning, which would cost us at least 11 minutes of track time. Two of the guys drove back to the cities to get parts to fix the car and we got it back running.
On Sunday we tried turning the boost down to save gas. I didn't get to drive on Saturday due to the failure, so I went out first in the morning, after maybe 40 minutes the car started overheating. It wouldn't totally go out of control, but it wasn't good, so I babied it until I starting sputtering from lack of fuel and brought it in. We kept going the whole day, if we kept the RPMs under 5500 or just went 50% throttle we could keep the temps from going out of control. With us babying the car and running slower times, we were able to run pit one less time and get it down to only 1 too many pits. We ended up 6th with 199 laps, shake and bake was 3rd with 200 laps, so things are very tight out there. I did a 360 coming into the carousel in the morning on Sunday, lost a little time waiting for a clear spot to get back on the track. A couple laps later another car did the same thing right in front of me in the same spot. Had a couple minor off track excursions, that only cost a couple seconds and passed a car in heavy traffic with all 4 wheels off the track between turns 5 and 6. I drove the last stint on Sunday and mostly just fell in behind other decently fast cars and just followed them to keep the car from overheating and finish the race, by then the tires were getting pretty bad and I would see chunks fly off the front drivers side in turn #2 at around 105 mph. It's likely that we will dump the turbo setup for the Chumpionship in Iowa, because every time you pit there is 6-10 laps lost. Iowa is wheel bearing/hub killer on Hondas too, we destroyed two of them at the last race and the hub failure we had at BIR also happened to another Honda at Iowa, guess they weren't actually built to do high speed cornering. |

lol, I love that last one.
It was a blast ripping off 1:58 laps on saturday, too bad I could only do that for about an hour before I needed gas :( |
