Anyone know of..

Some cheap apartments around the twin city area that aren't some place I would be worried about getting raped in and aren't to shitty? I'm pretty much being forced to move out and I can't seem to find anything worth it. I don't make much either, which is a problem.

Also, does anyone know of places hiring that make pretty good money?

Re: Anyone know of..

aren't we all? I too am looking to move out, cause if it's not soon, i might be moving away to CA or AZ with the family (father got laid off). As for the job..not too many would have an idea on that.

why are you getting kicked out?

Re: Anyone know of..

Actually I am kicked out. My step mom and I got into a huge fight and, to make a long story short, she said some shit she shouldn't have, including "I don't ever want you in my house again" and so I've been living with a friend at her mom's. Not a good time at all. Then she proceeded to tell my dad he needed to get out to [who pays her bills, btw. ALL of them, right down to the two packs of cigs a day she smokes] But he won't get off his as and find us a place to live, so I'm doing it myself. Sometimes you gotta take care of yourself, which sucks.

For sure, man. Unfortunately it may involve me taking a break from school, as well, to get a second job. I'm not that bothered by it though, because where I am at, school wise, is not where I want to be at all.

Re: Anyone know of..

That sucks to hear, hopefully I can offer some advice... The only place you'll find a cheap roof to live under is in the ghetto areas or the fringes of the burbs. The best you'll be able to do anywhere is $400-600 a month for a 1 bedroom or studio apartment. If you get lucky you'll be able to find something near the colleges such as around Dinkytown, up and down Marshall in St. Paul renting someone's basement, or something of that sort. Check out apartments.com if you want an apartment, or browse the newspaper for renting out of someone's house.

Yes, I have been looking on apartment finder and in magazines, a lot of what I'm finding is not so good. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to end up having to settle for something I wouldn't usualy take, and pray to god I don't get raped.

Another good option is to try the roomate idea. It can be somewhat difficult to get an apartment lease if you have poor/no credit. If you got together with a friend or two and split up rent, it gets cheaper. Then the problem is, can you trust them to pay bills?

I'm trying to find a room mate actually. My friend Kyle recently got kicked out so we've been discussing the possibility. But you are right, I don't want to be shit outta luck if my room mate decides to be irrespoinsible. But as I'm pricing out places, I've found I can save around $150 in rent on some of these places if I find a room mate. More if I can find two.

Don't you have to have a Co-Signer if you have poor/no credit? I don't have credit yet. I suppose another question is what are good ways to build credit?

Getting a credit card and using it a lot but always paying it off is a great way to build credit. Another good thing to remember is that going negative in your bank/checking account and not paying parking tickets (for example) can really drag down your credit rating.

Have you checked www.rent.com yet? I like that site for apartment searching.

Re: Anyone know of..

Chris is right about the credit card... Pay for all of your normal everyday stuff with it, but pay it off IMMEDIATELY and in full. Don't even let balances go longer than a week and you'll build credit in no time.

Re: Anyone know of..

The best way to build credit is to have two major cards and use them but keep them paid off. And of course have a checking account and even a savings account. Most of all keep all your bills paid on time. Cell phone ect if they are late will fuck your score over. Its takes a long time to build good credit but only one bad thing to bring it down.

Tauni...

Do you have any experience in Customer Service??

AJ 03-13-2006 12:00 PM

Re: Anyone know of..

You don't want to just pay off a credit card in full to build credit. It doesn't generate the results you'd think compared to carrying a balance on the card not more than 35-40% of your credit line. That tells the credit agaencies you can manage credit, use credit, and not abuse credit. The biggest key is your debt to income ratio and keeping it low low low.

As for an apt, just step up and tell your dad to get off his ass and be a father. Aren't you in high school yet?

ABV 03-13-2006 12:10 PM

Re: Anyone know of..

Actually you don't want to carry a balance at all from month to month. Even if you pay it off every month, the CC will actually show a balance on your credit report. They usually report to the credit agencies once a month, and whatever the balance is at that time, is the balance that will show on your report. So it's possible to have it paid off every month, and still build credit by showing that it's being used.

AJ 03-13-2006 12:16 PM

Re: Anyone know of..

Yeah, that's the point. You want to show an ability to manage credit and debt. If you pay off the card every month then you are not showing an ability to managed credit/debt. Don't get me wrong, paying off a CC will build good credit over time, but not nearly as looked as at someone who might carry a $25 - $50 balance on a credit card with a $300 credit limit during several months. It shows use, while not overusing the line of credit. Have the balance so it reports, then pay it off. Then have a small balance for 2 more months, then pay it off. It's best to do this with 2-3 cards (loans or other lines of credit included) max (house and car loans not included).

I've destroyed my credit over time and currently working at building it up again and not only have done my research on the subject as of late, but dealt with some profesional help from credit managing and the three reporting companies.

Tauni, One of my coworkers claims his family is renting a room out of their house for $200 a month I believe. That's about as cheap as it gets, but it's also only a room. I can call the guy and get you his number and whatnot if you'd like.

In Oakdale there is an apartment complex that goes off of income solely. There is a 5 month waiting list though.

If you can find someone that owns a house, and is willing to rent out a bedroom, I would do that. That's what I'm doing right now and it's alot cheaper than an apartment.

If you don't have great credit/low income, you can try finding someone in the suburbs that rents out a basement or upper level in their house. Usually they are cheaper and don't involve credit checks. You'll find them in good neighborhoods for reasonable rates. If the person that rents it to you lives there, you don't have to worry so much about a friend up and leaving you hanging with a lease.

Alex: I have no clue where Wayzata is. Maybe it would be easier if you just let me know how it works.

Shrep: Um, I think? Everywhere I've ever worked its been face to face with people all day long. I love people. Why?

As far as credit cards, that worries me because I'm not that good with money. Also, don't you need to maintain some big number in your checking account to even hold the account? So far TCF is the only place where you don't have to, and TCF is bullshit.

Re: Anyone know of..

USBank and Wells Fargo have no minimum checking accounts.

You need revolving accounts to build your credit rating. I used my Snap-On account and it boosted me thru the roof. It's the only way I got my loan for the house with no money down and no closing costs.

Check out someone renting out part of their house. You will get a much better deal. Especially if it's only being used for a short period of time. And whatever you do, don't abuse the opportunity by having parties and shit. I'm not implying that you do, but alot of others do that and it's really shitty for the landlord to have to put up with it.

Tauni 03-14-2006 12:07 AM

Re: Anyone know of..

This might be a dumb question, but what exactly is a revolving account?

I don't think I would want to rent out of someone's house. I think it would make me a bit uneasy not knowing the people up stairs, you know? But I am finding pretty good deals on apartments!

I have to move out too. I'm thinking ghetto wouldn't be so bad.

Re: Anyone know of..

A revolving account is one where you don't spend all of your credit limit, like most credit cards. The trick is to keep your balance under 50% of your limit. You might have to start with a store credit card like Macy's. The interest rate sucks, but they'll give them to anyone with a pulse. Just use it wisely(rarely) and you'll build some credit over time.

Reid: You are a guy. You aren't a skrawny little girl. To me ghetto is like a death wish.

I live on 34th and morgan, in north mpls. I guess you can call that ghetto but to me the projects is the ghetto, although that is where i am from, there is a huge difference between where i used to live and where i am. Anyways there are some good neighborhoods around these parts. They are usually weird like half a block is good and the other half is not so good. Some parts around what you guys call "Ghetto" arent that bad. Anways My sister has an 2 bedroom apartment with wood floors and a patio that is up for rent at the moment. It's located on 34th and penn, a main street, which usually has no trouble there, due to heavy traffic. It's above commerical space which my sister rents out to some guy who gives free books out for kids. It's right next to a elementary school. If you want more info i can call my sis but give me a pm
