Mike Gates!

Hey I was wondering if anyone knows a Mike Gates! The guy I bought my 92 GSX (Ben M. from So. St. Paul) from bought it from him. I believe he went to the U of M! He bought a tranny and x-fer case from John Walsh in Redwing. It had no reverse for awhile. Just wondering if he is on here or not. Orif anyone knows him!

Re: Mike Gates!

I've met him before. Long time ago. BTW, why is this in the members intro forum? I'm gonna move it.

Haven't heard about him in quite a while. Drove a black 2G right?

Re: Mike Gates!

Sorry, well I was think BIOS haha! I don't know what he drives or who he is. The guy who I bought it from bought it from him. He left his Log book. Most of the things he'd done to my 92 GSX since Jan of 99! Most of the 140,XXX miles were from high way miles that he recorded. I just wanted to ask anything else he'd done to the car. A lot of wires spliced and all. Passenger side dash is cut out, etc.

Re: Mike Gates!

Yeah, I knew him pretty well. He copied my Talon conversion on the GSX. What do you want to know?

Re: Mike Gates!

If he is not a hack job like Chris Johnson.... I wonder if that kid is still driving that rex.

Goat Blower 09-22-2006 04:35 PM

Re: Mike Gates!

He's definitely not a hack job, he was pretty particular about doing things right. Plus I think he was going to school to be an engineer, and was working part time at 3M. He filled in the antenna and wiper holes in my rear spoiler, and did a real nice job. Chris Johnson just kind of threw shit together.

Kracka 09-22-2006 04:38 PM

Re: Mike Gates!

Man all these old-school names....haven't heard about Johnson in at least 4 years, probably closer to 5.

Goat Blower 09-22-2006 05:02 PM

Re: Mike Gates!

How about Norm, Shindley, Keith Anderson, Mark Cook, Matt Jannusch, Patrick Jens, Scott Jann, Andy Moxom and Mike Bertz. Andy is still around the MN-DSM board once in a while.

It's kind of funny reading some of the old names from 2001, and even those were pretty new compared to the list in 1998. http://www.knight-rider.org/mn-dsm/members/

I'm sort of friends with Chris Johnson, no he's not driving the wrx anymore he got a outback :) (I laughed my ass off when I found out).

Chris Turcotte (however you spell his last name) still drives his red GSX, but had to rebuild the tranny recently.

Re: Mike Gates!

Yea the dude talks about 3M in his log book also. The whole setup on my car was done by him and only him. THe owner before me, just threw on 99GSX rims and tires. I was wondering what he had for tuning and such. Also any time slips while it was still his? Also yea I have the conversion! haha IMO its way better than a GSX! Thanks you guys!

Kracka 09-22-2006 05:12 PM

Re: Mike Gates!

Is Shindley still doing side work on DSM's?

94AWDTSi 09-22-2006 05:14 PM

Re: Mike Gates!

Haha and I'm guessing he did better than 16.3? haha

I can't remember exactly, I think he had a VPC and a SAFC. I think he was running low 13's, but he hardly raced it that I remember.

Re: Mike Gates!

He had something in the glove compartment, it's cut out. A bunch of wires on the driver side! On and off button for I don't know what! He talks about rewiring his fog lights in the log book, so I'm guessing its that? Anyone got his contact information?

94AWDTSi 09-22-2006 05:29 PM

Re: Mike Gates!

Do you guys know it Mike Gates ran a 16g? I haven't check it yet, but the the previous owner before me (Ben M.) said that Mike said that he has it in the car! I haven't had time to check, but it does pull!

That's a list of people from waaaay back. Or at least it seems that way. Patrick moved to Vegas I think but what happened to Scott Jann and Norm Shaw?

Here is his old modlist. http://www.knight-rider.org/mn-dsm/m...s/dsmracr.html

Re: Mike Gates!

He had a twin turbo setup? He also wrote his name all over the ECU. HAha!

EVO Cyclone motor, twin turbo setup with two RRE ported 16G's (exhaust and compressor sides), Hallman mbc, RRE ported 2G exhaust manifold and O2 housings, HK$ exhaust, 200 shot of NOS, Koni Sport dampers wrapped with H&R springs, Pilot Motorsports strut tower bar, Dunlop SP8000 tires, K&N filter, Galant GVR-4 transmission and transfer case, AP racing 6-piston calipers and 13" cryo-treated rotors...

Re: Mike Gates!

Is there even a benifit to a TT set up or is it better just to spend the money on a bigger turbo

94AWDTSi 09-22-2006 07:32 PM

Re: Mike Gates!

I wonder if anyone has pictures of when he still had it? Anyone know if he still uses "DSMracr"

So I got a hold of Mike Gates.

You got to be kidding me. He sold the WRX for that.... He sold his 94 TSi AWD for the WRX. I still have his 92 TSi AWD. I hated working on it because I was always fixing his hack jobs. Like the fuse box. All the fuses were lose. Ugh...but all in all I love my car.
