Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
This kit is going to take a few days to install, so I'll document it as I go along.
A few months back I decided to ditch my SMC alky kit and upgrade to an Aquamist. There were a number of different reasons behind this, but ultimately the Aquamist is the best kit/combo available right now. It all boils down to two things: instant on/off spraying, and actual support for a real life failsafe. The Aquamist has a HUGE pump that is always on. The top 1/4 of it is a bolt-on manifold that they designed so it can supply a constant 125psi to the fluid line, no matter how much flow there is. Full flow or zero flow. This kit has a valve that is placed in the line just before the injection point that instantly supplies perfect flow or zero flow to the engine. The other thing I plan to do with this new setup is pretty amazing, and really clutch for this whole project. ECU hacks are being developed for the evo 8 ecu that will allow different fuel/timing/boost maps based on a voltage input to a free ecu pin. I've worked with Aquamist UK to figure out a good way to use this Aquamist kit to do this. The DDS Flow monitoring gauge for this kit has an on/off switch, so I'll be able to switch between fully tuned straight pump gas map@24psi to a fully tuned alky map@28psi with literally the push of a button. Also if anything ever goes wrong with the alky kit, I will revert to my pump gas map so all will be safe. There's lots more to go on and on about with this kit, but I'll just jump into it. This kit is really comprehensive. A picture is worth a thousand words (and parts!) For reference, the pump is about the size of one of those big 24oz silver bullet beer cans: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5324.sized.jpg This kit is kinda DIY in that you have to assemble *everything* yourself, you have to source your own alky tank, and any installation accessories you have to get yourself. I got some nice techflex to wrap up the tubing and wiring as it runs here and there through the car. Here's the mount I made out of 1.5" x .125" aluminum from Menards. This holds the tank and pump: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5327.sized.jpg Mounted up in the trunk, wiring semi-run: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5329.sized.jpg Ran the fuel line/wiring loom behind the seat supports, so they wouldn't get smashed by people bouncing on the rear seats: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5330.sized.jpg Trunk lining/carpet back in place. Glad I went with the 4 quart tank, it fits perfect! http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5331.sized.jpg DDS gauge temporarily mounted on my steering clumn: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5334.sized.jpg That's all for day two, I probably have about 4 hours into this kit install as of now. Lots of time sitting and fiddling with all of the little pieces :) Also, just wanna thank Modern Automotive Performance, I'm psyched a local shop can hook us up with the best alky kit on the market! |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
uh oh, scheides is gonna be a little quicker than i thought.
I can say that if E85 ever disappeared then i would do this. |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
E85 is not easily available for me, so this is the route I'm taking :) Anyone w/o access to reliably high-octane, quality gasoline should consider a setup like this!

Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
looks really nice I will be getting the same kit for the evo as soon as I get the twin plate in it
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
lookin good!
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Nice. I plan on getting one of these rather than going E-85. At least with this route, you can save a little fuel mileage.

Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Well it was *really* nice out today and after a few days out of town I was excited to get some time in on this project. First thing I did was yank the tank and flip the float sensor over into the correct orientation, I felt like a dumbass about that one but it was nice that everything came apart so nicely :)
I then ran power and my small hose to the engine bay, and mounted the flow sensor and valve to the right of the glovebox (thanks for the tip KevinD!). I am focusing on keeping the wiring as clean as possible so I did not finish tonight. Extra hose wrapped up in case I want to extend this bit further into the engine bay: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5458.sized.jpg Mounted valve and flow sensor (tucked to the right): http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5459.sized.jpg All is well when everything is where it should be and you end up with this. Wiring leads for all of the sensors. Thank you aquamist for keeping everything semi color coded! http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5461.sized.jpg Nice and tidy: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5463.sized.jpg There's a nice spot just above the glove box that this will be secured to. For now its just in the glove box while I test everything out and get the DDS dialed in. The wires to teh top right will be tie wrapped a bit more so they're all out of the way: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5465.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5466.sized.jpg |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
looks good and that is still alot of wires
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Looks good so far!
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
woot! major milestone tonight, wired in the kit to the factory ecu harness, not sure how ya can get much cleaner than this:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...0184.sized.jpg And voila, the DDS is alive! http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...0185.sized.jpg Still gotta wire up the dimmer, main power, and fill the tank....its so close I can taste the alcohol! |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Looks good!
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
nice
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
So, uh, how much power does it make?
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
that looks really nice

We'll find out here shortly... |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Wow, really impressive sheides, I can't imagine all that wiring was easy to keep track of.
Looks factory like, atleast who may ever buy your car in the future will be getting a car that was well done. |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Sweet! Looks very nice :)
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
The OP is rich...So the more money he has the more stuff he can buy and surpass us all. I wish I was a site owner...lol

Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Looks nice! Why not get gauge pods on the pillar or does anyone make a bezel to put to the sides and under the dash, like they do for 2gs?
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Peter, he said the gauges up on his dash are temporary.

With that said, this project exists solely because I have done it all myself, if I had to pay someone else to install this it would not happen, like many of the other mods on my car. Now, BACK ON TOPIC (damn you Defiant!) Last night I finished the wiring around midnight. I was at a wedding rehearsal and now I'm off to the wedding, but I managed to get in some testing! http://i.ytimg.com/vi/yIBC24j-tiM/default.jpg Spraying on the windshield just to make sure all is dandy. My BSP tap should be here today, so tomorrow AM I'll yank the UICP, drill the hole, tap it, and install the jet adapter. :D :D :D :D |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
linky no worky
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Scheides, I'm pretty sure everyone here knows that you most likely have a well paying job and you're just a hard worker bro.
Don't let some fool get to you. |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Wow man, good job, Its lookin good... You are getting dynoed soon right? I wanna know what kind of numbers the Evo is going to put up...
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Probably less than an Evo 9 with 3 or 4 mods. :)

Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Finished up the basic install today!
I have my UICP back in the car with the Aquamist jet adapter installed. BSP tap worked perfectly with the 11/32 bit. A good bit of blue threadlock on it and it should hold boost. The car drives like a DREAM! Switched back to my old 26psi alky map from my SMC kit and the car freaking hauls ass now. Needs a tune though, there are some definite weird spots and I want to see what a few more psi does. I also need to get a solid pump gas tune, then the car will be all set for the tephra map switching hack! 1mm nozzle installed and ready to rock! Note the damage leftover from my SMC nozzle gone wrong.... http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5642.sized.jpg Power lead with fuse right as it leaves the battery: http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5646.sized.jpg The only pic I'm missing now is one of the huge-ass smile on my face! This kit has been a good job to install but it is worth every penny and every minute I took to do it right. My only fear now is that I won't go back and finish the little things I still have left: a permanent mount for the DDS gauge, extend the length of the power wire a bit, wrap up the last bit (about a foot) of alky hose going into the UICP so its protected and cleaner (i.e. wrapped in black), tap into the dimmer, and then need to secure the dds junction box somewhere once I get the trigger dialed in. I have it set to start around 15psi now, I'd like it to be just a tad higher. I'm sure I'll find time for these little things in the next few days. I'm too close now to give up :) I also got my set of off-brand krank vents from Kracka today, I will post more on these once I've tried them out more, but they will go with my new catch can nicely! PM for more info on those. http://www.scheides.com/albums/aquam...5638.sized.jpg |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
You're inspiring me to get one too.

Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Car pulls great! Enjoy those Kracka CCV's ;)

Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
I have had the kit running for a few days now and I just wanted to make a few comments about it. The weather is clear here now and the roads are dry, so I have had more opportunities to tear it up and really test this new setup out. (Yes I tested it in the snow, ice, and rain/slush, it worked well then too :) ) When I had my SMC kit before I was constantly worried about the line being properly primed. Each morning when I assumed the line was low on pressure or empty, I would gently roll on the throttle to hit the trigger point so the line would pressurize, or I would hit the test button. If I did not do this, I would get knock the first time I hit WOT, and it was a bit scary really. Also when I would roll on the throttle, hit the trigger point, then let off there would be this fuzzy area where the car would stumble a bit, it was not aweful but still noticeable.
The Aquamist kit is SO SMOOTH. Rolling on/off throttle is a dream, just perfect. No hesitation, no stumbling, etc. I was really pining over whether to get the HFS-1 or HFS-5 and I have to say the HFS-1 is REALLY good value for this very point. On the line pressurizing point, yes, the aquamist is constantly ready to rock. This morning I was on the phone as I left the house (biz call) and so I was driving the car gently for the first few miles. I hung up and after getting onto a long entrance ramp to another major freeway, I grabbed 4th and just nailed it. I did this consciously, making sure to not activate the alky at all prior to this. I was really kind of crossing my fingers, but alas, ZERO knock, and again, SO SMOOTH. Just BAM the car hits 26psi and off she goes! Vacation is coming up, but spring is here, dyno results sometime in the next few weeks! |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Awesome! I'm glad to hear you're happy with it. Now I just need to get mine!
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
very nice I just have to save up for it now
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Good to hear man!

Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
Like ebony and ivory, I have my Aquamist HFS-1, GM BCS, and tephra v5 working in perfect harmony on my car. Boost is semi-dialed in so that my base map hovers around 21psi and my alt map hovers around 26psi. Base map is a basic pump gas tune I put together for myself, and the alt map is a modified version of my tune from my SMC alky kit. Both need refinement, but you get the idea of how awesome these technologies working together is!
video: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/dWUNj-s3GBE/default.jpg I donated money to Tephra, did you? There is no fancy footwork here, there are no extra switches. I have a 240k resistor running from a 12v source in the dds junction box that is switched on and off using the dds and then runs to pin 42 of my ecu. Simply turn dds off and you drop down to a standard pump gas tune. If any of the standard failsafe catches on the aquamist kit are hit, it falls back to the pump gas tune (and low boost) as well. |
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
very nice.
|
Re: Aquamist HFS-1 alky kit
I'm totally jealous!
