So nice meeting your wives and girlfriends

How's that for an introduction? Had a great time seeing Emily again, and meeting Allie and Anna at the China parking lot on Saturday night. I think there were some guys there too. Looking forward to seeing a lot of MitsuStyle peeps at events this summer.

Creepy or not, it got your attention which was my goal! :) You can ask Anna and Allie if they thought I was creepy. I thought they were kind. Allie told good stories about police work. Without being sexist, I will say that at most car events the girls look bored out of their minds. I make a special effort to engage them in conversation and make them feel welcome and included. Sure I flirt, but it's innocent and fun. I look forward to meeting more people next time, perhaps on one of my country road tours. I'll be sure to post them here.

My silver 2005 Evo VIII is the regular GSR but with the Sun Sound and Leather package. It's still under warranty so I haven't modded it yet, except wheels and tires.

Weak sauce. My car is still 'under warranty' too, 2005 w/ SSL, 52k miles. It just has not been to the dealership for work! I have not had a reason to, even though it is making awesome power. I say mod it, otherwise we will have to start making limp-wristed jokes about you like I do with Hughes (Kracka)! We put exhaust on rosey's car for $300....$18 boost pill and he's prolly making 60hp over stock, easy :)

Re: So nice meeting your wives and girlfriends

It's not how strong the sauce is, it's what you do with it. I think the most important mod, the one that should be done before anything else, is increasing driver skill. I run my stock (except for r-compounds and race brake pads) Evo around BIR in 1:55 or thereabouts. Sure with mods I could shave off a few seconds, but I'm happy with the set up for now, and so is the dealer when I go in for warranty work (new 5th gear synchro, both front struts, alignment, etc.). Even got a new clutch free of charge at 35K miles because they apparently spilled gear oil on the disc when doing the tranny work. And they always give me a free loaner car while the Evo is in the shop. The warranty will run out in 12K miles. Then let the mods begin!

I'll be up at Brainerd on May 17-18 instructing for the BMW/Audi Club HPDE. Hope to see some MitsuStyle peeps there!

"Ali" - check. It makes it easier to stalk them when I have the correct spelling of the names. ;o)

Seriously though, I run some fun country road tours and great high speed events, and I'll be sure to post them here (no matter how much teasing I get) now that I know about this forum.

LOVE the right-hand-drive. Gotta get me one of those just to freak out other people on the road.

A few weeks back Zac had his IX in at brookdale for warranty work. He had his MBC, intake, full TBE w/ no cat, and SS o2 housing installed. The work was done no questions asked. Your warranty is almost up anyways, why wait! Modding for power is not only about track times, it is about the smile on your face every day you go to or leave work, give friends or relatives a ride, etc. Who needs prozac when you got boost!

At least Matt D. has a few mods!

The whole "not modding it b/c I'm trying to save the warranty" is a bogus excuse and would only matter if your engine blew up which it won't. If you don't want to mod the car then don't, just be honest with yourself and others as to your reasons ;) Your car, your money, your choice!

It's not bogus, it matters for way more than just blown engines, and I'm being totally honest with myself and with you. I did a lot of research before purchasing my Evo almost two years ago. What I learned is that Mitsu Corporate refuses to cover warranty repairs due to mods or non-street use (autocross, drag strip, HPDE) more often than most other car companies. A brief search on evolutionm.net turned up dozens of such stories. I found them in print media as well. Now compare to BMW, for example: My friends in the local BMW club take their Bimmers to the Motorwerks BMW dealer for tech inspections before track events. The dealer ENCOURAGES this! Their warranties remain intact. Not so with Mitsu. I read of many cases where the Evo owner's repair was not covered under warranty because he installed aftermarket parts or attended a track event and had numbers put on the side of his car. One photo with his license plates and the door numbers is all the proof they need. I don't have the actual quote, but the fine print of the warranty apparently states that the repair will not be covered if an aftermarket part interfered with the normal functioning of the car, or if the car was used in a competitive event.

Now of course I don't think guys who race their Evos should use warranty repairs as their pit crew. And I'm also sure some Mitsu dealers are more friendly than others when it comes to turning a blind eye to the mods on cars that need warranty work. I've just decided to enjoy the warranty period without modding my car, let it get to 60K (it's at 49K now), then consider some mods. Once I get there, I'll be asking you mod freaks for advice!

Re: So nice meeting your wives and girlfriends

Man I've heard that story about Mitsu attending events and taking down VINs and License plates and I say who cares. If you can afford an evo, you can afford a clutch, which is about the only part that is going to break/wear out on a mildly modded evo.

Order your exhaust, boost controller, and an intake and put them on when your car hits 59,999.9 miles, and I bet you a beer you will be KICKING yourself for not doing it 59,990 miles sooner. Every turn you exited, every stop light you left, every on ramp you took could have been that much more fun. I'm not trying to tell you you're dumb or stupid for not doing these things, there's just no good reason for someone with an evo and a good job not to do these, they're half the fun of owning the car!

Your one 'mod' you said you have is brake pads, what pads did you go with?

Actually there are very good reasons, even though I do have a good job (with time to post during the day!) The clutch isn't the only thing that breaks in an Evo. As I mentioned above, I've had both front struts and 5th gear (and free clutch) replaced under warranty, as well as many other minor repairs that would have cost me several hundred dollars total if it weren't for the warranty. And I've only owned the car for 18 months. Sure I drive it hard, but that's what it's for. My RSX Type-S, my MX-3, even my Scirocco in high school were the same way. I drove them hard, they broke, the dealer fixed them free of charge under warranty. The warranty is the insurance and peace of mind that allows me to drive the car as it should be driven without worrying about being out-of-pocket when something breaks. Maybe the rest of you guys just aren't driving your Evos hard enough? ;)

As far as the "could have been that much more fun" argument, I'm enjoying the anticipation of even more performance once I start modding. Those stop lights, on ramps, country roads, and more importantly, those TRACKS will still be there. Funny, I have heard the same "why didn't I do this sooner?" from many of my students at high performance drivers education events. I'm sticking with my belief that the first and most important mod to make is driver education. Sadly, with a few bright exceptions, most of the Uni parking lot crowd has no idea what HPDE is. Maybe by becoming more involved, I can get more people to the next level of attending HPDE events.

A lot of guys run race brake pads and wider wheels and tires when taking their Evos to the track. Of course I would NEVER take my Evo to a race track because that would void the warranty! But if I DID, I would mount 255/40/17 shaved Toyo RA-1s on Enkei NT03+M 17x9.5 wheels with Hawk DTC-70 pads front and HT-10s rear. Hypothetically, of course.

Can you tell I'm bored at work today? ;)

Re: So nice meeting your wives and girlfriends

Kinda hypocritical to say you would not have the dealership be your pit crew and 'admit' to tracking your car on the same page, don't you think? I think you owe it to yourself to immediately dump that 'several hundred dollars' you saved by having a warranty into performance mods, and then another 'several hundred dollars' on top of that, for good measure. My car is making about 140-150whp over stock on a stock IX turbo, no issues (besides a clutch) that have caused me any sort of money to fix.

You know I'm only being hard on you because you hit on my wife w/o even saying hi to me, right? That, and I firmly believe in evos needing to be modified, otherwise you might as well have bought a mazdaspeed protege :P

There are no mod secrets that I know of, just proven parts combos that make good, reliable power. Look at my mod list and you will know my 'secrets' in about 8 seconds.

Anna has a twin sister, but she's married. She does have a younger brother, if you care to go down that road...

Didn't you have something resembling this combo at the EvoMN Spring Meet at Old Chicago last year? I thought you also brought in some slotted brake rotors.

In technicality you've already voided your brake warranty ;)

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but my Girlfriend just felt awkward when you approached a group of people and only talked to her amongst a circle of fellow Evo owners.

Someone should forward this thread along to Mitsu ;)

I think its pretty strange and creepy for a guy to show up to a car meet and knowingly hit on the wives/girlfriends of fellow club members. Not the greatest way to make new friends. Its too bad my girlfriend wasn't in the group you were attempting to flirt with...she probably would have said what the rest of them were thinking (by the way, even she mods her "under warranty" car) :D
