1G radiator fan won't turn on
Having radiator fan troubles on the 1G. Checked the fan, it spins if I wire 12v to it, no problemo. This is the stock fan on the passenger side, wired into the stock plug. What is it that makes this fan spin when the car gets hot, is it the ecu, triggered by the lower temp sensor? Sensor feeding the gauge seems to work just dandy, have not hooked up a logger to verify the other sensor is working. I have not tested the voltage at the plug, either. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions to get this thing spinning!

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
hey, im not positive but isnt the right side wired in for the a/c switch? I thought it was the secondary but maybe im wrong.
edit *Passenger side* |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Side question, anyone know a good place to just hardwire the fan on when ignition is on?
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
He is talking about the fan on the passenger side of the car which is the main cooling fan.
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
^ Thats what im talking about, thats where mine was wired and it only worked with the A/C switch on...
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Maybe i am nuts, but I think the A/C fan is on the driver's side...its been too long!
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
A/C fan was wired on the driver's side as far as I know.
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
i dunno maybe its just been awhile since looking at it.. lol
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Swapped the relays and checked the fuses, still no go. I'm wondering if the pass side one *is* the a/c one. I'll try that tomorrow.
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
wow. sorry to hear about your troubles, but you guys haven't gone crazy, the pass. side fan is the main fan.
Should turn on at about 203-206F |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
It's controlled by the ECU, right?
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
I believe the stock BCS is 12V that's comes on with the ignition. Not sure how well it can handle a fan though.
I believe the fan is simply controlled by that switch that is threaded into the bottom of the radiator on 1G's. Kyle mentioned something about being able to buy switches that thread in, but switch on at a lower temperature. Have you tried putting in a new switch? That may be worth a shot, and shouldn't take too long to swap in. Also, just a dumb question, but are you overheating or anything? Do you know that the fan isn't running when it should be running? If it's not even getting up to the correct temperature where it should be turning on at, the fan won't kick on. And yes, the passenger fan is the MAIN fan. |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
There's a seperate temp sensor for the fans. It's on the lower radiator tank on the left side if you're standing at the front of the car facing the engine. The sensor is probably bad.
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Ya the car is def getting up to temp, and even overheating. I'll round up a new switch after I test for voltage coming out of the plug and the a/c thing.

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Kevin has got it. There is a temp switch below the main fan. It's a small screw in type near the lower passenger side radiator mount.
I believe the plug for the ac fan is the same. You could plug it into that and keep the ac switch on as a temporary fix. You could also use the AC switch and drivers side fan wiring as a trigger with a relay off the battery. Then it would be controllable and could operate all the time. As an added fail safe, I'm pretty sure the AC fan comes on if the temp gets too high so even if you forgot the switch it would still come on eventually. *edit* if anyone has a link for the lower temp fan switch I'd love one. I'd prefer it to come on in the 190 - 195 range. |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Kevin nailed it, I'd check the coolant temp sensor.

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Kevin you copy cat!

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Wow, 17 posts to figure out a bad coolant temp sensor. Mint.

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
i had this same problem and all it was is a bad ground. ive heard of a few other people having the same problem
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Where was this bad ground it turned out to be? My fan isnt coming on right now. Checked everything, replaced thermostat, even replaced the harness (part that plugs into fan). Fan wont even come on when I use jumper wires at the fuse to start up the fan or when I turn on the A/C fan.
How do you connect the fan to a switch to manually turn it on? I'll need to bypass the stock harness if it's part of the connection to the switch. |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
Are you using jumper wires just at the fuse, or jumping it straight to the fan? If you're jumping it straight to the fan, then the fan motor is bad.
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
i take back my ass comment.
so your jumping the fuse, what about the relay switch? |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
yeah, I meant Im jumping it from the relay switch itself. I just connected the two left connectors and that should've started the fan, but it didnt so I went by what the repair book says and I connected the battery directly to the fan to test if the fan was working and it worked, but there was a lil spark that ignited at the fan plug. Hopefully the fan didnt go bad because of that.

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
no its not the left two, its the bottom right one and the top left one, i just had to do this to my 91 talon cause the fans wouldnt turn on

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
sweet, the fan works this way. Thanks a lot for the clarification Viridionplague. You just saved me a huge headache.
Now, basically I can just hook up the toggle switch to the jumper wire and that should let me turn on the fan at my will, correct? |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
well its a little diffrent for a lot of the cars, there 2 diffrent styles for the 1g's ive noticed
one is the relay has male connectors, and one where the relay has female connectors. either way they should be corner to corner |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
if you have the fuse box by the driver side strut tower, its pins 1 and 3, or the 2 on the bottom

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
kind of hard to tell, in my car i dont even have the box on the driver side, just the passenger side box. where in blaine do you live?
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
oh crap, forgot to change my location. I moved to Stp earlier this year, but I'll be in blaine tonight to bowl at brunswick, lol. Im gonna go ahead and try what I mentioned for now, it should work. The toggle switch will basically disconnect the top left and bottom right connection and shut off the fan.

Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
on my car i have a "rad fan" relay, i connected the bottom left, and top right together, when i turn the car on, the fans turn on
|
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
im sorry i said that wrong in a previous pot, it is the bottom left and top right, assuming your on the rad fan relay on the passenger side,
the driver side is supposed to be the 2 bottom pins and when your done at brunswick and still dont have the fan working swing on by, im not more than 5 minutes away from there |
Re: 1G radiator fan won't turn on
ok cool. Thanks for all the help man. Much appreciated.
