Car choices

So I'm planning on getting a newer car sometime this summer, and can't really decide what I want. I do know that I want it to be RWD, 5 or 6 speed manual, and not a Mustang.

As some of you know, I've strongly been considering the new Genesis Coupe, but for the price of the model I want, there's alot of other options for less money. If I go used, I don't really wanna spend much more than $20k.

A couple other options I've been considering is a 350z. Seems like those are going from anywhere from $15-$25k depending on the model. I've also been considering a Miata, but I don't really like the way the current gen looks, so it would have to be a '99 - '05 body style. The only downside to those cars, is that they are 2 seaters. But I don't really ever have more than myself, and my dog or a couple bags of groceries in the car at any one time, so it's not really too much of an issue.

I plan on daily driving the car, and I have no problem driving a RWD car in the snow, just gotta have a decent set of snow tires and a limited slip diff.

Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions for other cars I should look into?

Re: Car choices

My suggestions would have to be G35 coupe, S2000, E46 M3, or 328i/330i, or find a mint E36 M3. The last two might be bumping your price range up a bit though.

I personally wouldn't get a miata.

Re: Car choices

If you decide against the Genesis Coupe:
S2k
G35 Coupe
350Z

My coworker has a 350Z and its a nice car, bigger and more spacious compared to the S2k, but not as much of a pure sports car. If you go that route, he may actually be selling it so let me know. The G35 is very similar to the Z, just a nicer interior and a tiny backseat.

Re: Car choices

I was considering a G35 coupe but I don't really like the way they look. They seem kinda bland to me.

Re: Car choices

I personally like the new genesis otherwise I like 350z's and s2k's. there is always the srt-8s or the g8, saturn sky redline or solstice gxp if you want to go domestic

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-06-2009 12:05 PM

Re: Car choices

I haven't heard many good things about the transmissions in the SRT8's. The G8 is kinda meh... The sky redline has also crossed my mind. Just did a little searching, and S2k's aren't really as expensive as I thought they would be.

Re: Car choices

I've seen a yellow s2k in shoreview a few times and it was pretty sweet

Re: Car choices

They saturn sky is pretty awesome....but for around $10,000 you can get a really nice used s2000.

even if it has a quarter of a million miles, i would rather own a honda then a brand new gm/ford/Nissan

Kracka 03-06-2009 01:02 PM

Re: Car choices

$10k won't get you a really nice S2k, but $15k will. Glad I sold mine when I did with how the prices have crashed!

Seems like a good list to me.

I know you mentioned not liking the SRT-8 trannies, but how bout a Challenger?

They are are the high side as far as price goes:(, though I'm not sure if there is any used ones out there yet or what they are going for.

Re: Car choices

You could look at a Porsche Boxter S too. I just sold my 01 BMW M roadster for $18,600 with 39k miles on it. Convertible prices have crashed hard, they are a great buy right now.

Wow Jet, thats so low. :( If it was a coupe I would have been all over it. I have to say I do miss the M and will have one again someday.

Re: Car choices

Yeah, I lost my ass on that one. $.50/mile just in depreciation. It is another car to look into, they do have a few quirks though.

Re: Car choices

An Evo X :)

Seriously though, I'm thinking the Genesis is gonna be a win, otherwise an S2k would be a lot of fun!

asshanson 03-06-2009 03:14 PM

Re: Car choices

Yea, with the Evo X base model sale price around the cost of the genesis, I'd do that. Or maybe get a slightly used one for around $20k. I guess that's not RWD though...

one of the other managers in minneapolis has a 350z and says it's nice but it feels really heavy in the corners.

Re: Car choices

Does every one hate the RX7 and Supra? RX8 could be a nice dd kinda girly. Don't forget the later model mr2. I really like the 6.0 GTO. Remember that nothing says "I'm gaay"
faster than a Miata*. CTS-Vs are a nice full size luxary car, rwd, manual and a whole lot of whoop ass. There are a lot of early 2000s Corvettes for 20k and if youd consider driving a 350 in the winter why not a vett? The SSR has the vett engine butt is over priced. Are the Chrysler Crossfires RWD? Those are pretty nice lil cars. Every one loves the Lexus IS 300 and 350... But really when its all said and done could you go with out looking at the Lotus Elise? has a nice one for 25k ok so its a little over ur budget but can you imagine how fast i'd throw my self at you if you pulled up in that car?

* look at any gay pride/rights parade or the movie GO, or google image miata motivational posters

Nothings screams over-rated and over-priced louder than those two cars.

Everyone has brought up some good possibilities! I would say start picking some out a local dealers and go for some test drives!

Theres a 350z for sale in coon rapids, that has a single turbo set-up, I believe he's asking 20k. I know the guy personally, and it has a lot of really good work done to it. Its never gave him any problems, and puts down about 400rwhp. Its a complete steal at that price. Im not sure how much of a dd it would be, but it would be a hell of a lot of fun to drive.

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-06-2009 09:31 PM

Re: Car choices

Good suggestions so far. Thanks! No rotaries though, thanks. I couldn't deal with the piss poor gas mileage, horrible oil consumption, sub par performance, and shitty apex seals. One thing I would like to do with whatever car I get is to try my hand at autox, so it has to be able to corner at least somewhat well, so that kinda puts out the GTO (plus, they look kinda ghey to me) and other sedans. I dunno if I could see myself driving a Porsche, insurance would likely be very high, and if it ever broke, I'm sure parts would cost a fortune.

So far, my list of cars to look at goes like this. In no particular order:
Genesis coupe
S2k
350z
Sky Redline
Crossfire
328i/330i

JET 03-06-2009 10:09 PM

Re: Car choices

Skip the crossfire, my uncle has one and it is nothing impressive at all. I would toss the BMW Z3 on there though if you like the looks.

For $20k, I'd probably do the Vette. Or maybe a bargain basement NSX.

Re: Car choices

i was checking vehix and i found a 77 vette stingray, pretty done up 450+ ponies, manual 4 speed

only asking 8500

An NSX would be very fun!

Re: Car choices

Let's not forget that I would be driving this car in the winter, and I don't think the torque of a vette or the low ground clearance of an NSX would be very good in the snow. Plus, the interior of a c5 vette is absolute shit.

Re: Car choices

I agree with the list that everyone has put forward so far.

Now its up to you to go drive some cars and see what you like.

Re: Car choices

personally I like the sky redline it has decent power stock your only issue with it is the lack of a trunk. My father and I looked at one and you could fit a set of clubs in it(sales guy owned one and said it was possible) but with the top down there is no room for anything.

or my choice would be a bmw if I where to be looking rwd

E36 M3, Genesis Coupe, G35/350Z, in my mind those are the only cars that really have everything you want. The BMWs are awesome in the snow, surprisingly. Their traction control is great! I personally love the looks of the G35 coupe over the 350z, it's that damn stupid door handle on the Z, G35 = classy/350z = AZN white trash lol.

FYI, no traction control on the 95 M3's. They do work just fine in the snow. I have a couple bimmers if you want to see what they feel like.

Re: Car choices

I wouldn't want to try to drive a 350Z in the snow even with snow tires. An NSX at least won't rust in the winter. I would take a 300ZX TT over a 350Z.

Agreed, 350s are pretty insane trying to drive in the winter time.

haha if it wasn't for how plain the front end of the G35 looked (I hate the front bumper and that stupid wide grille) I would really think about that car.
And Craig, that M3 you posted is a pretty sweet deal, if only it would still be for sale in 4 or 5 months when I'm ready to buy.
