Cobra Brakes on a 1G

I need new brakes. I was considering picking up the Baer Track kit for $859, but it uses a lot of OEM parts that you can source yourself. So I've decided to build my own kit similar to the Baer kit, hoping to save myself a couple hundered bucks.

Here are the parts that I bought to make the kit:
-----------------------------------------------

*2 Calipers w/ Pads - $247.80 shipped
http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/pr..._id=671cPath=6

http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/co...e[11]=100&
That same site sells the Bullitt calipers for $30 less, and they are the exact same caliper, except instead of saying COBRA on them, it has a picture of a Pony. I spent the extra $30 for the Cobra's because I just don't want a picture of a pony on my car :P They also sell kits that include Brembo Rotors.

SPECIAL M10 X 1.5 X ~24MM BANJO BOLTS REQUIRED FOR THESE CALIPERS.
DO NOT BUY THE BANJO BOLTS FROM THIS SHOP. THEIR THREAD DESIGN WON'T TIGHTEN DOWN FULLY ON THE BRAKE LINE BANJO FITTING. SEE PICTURES BELOW.

here you see how they grind down some of the threads, which is what creates the problem:
http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/pr..._id=509cPath=6

here is the bolt fully tightened down, and you see it doesn't come close to clamping down on the brake line fitting:
http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...6&d=1245194260

*2 M10 x 1.5 x ~24mm Banjo Bolts - $10.65 after tax
http://shop.oreillyauto.com/ProductD...rtNumber=13940

http://shop.oreillyauto.com/product_...013911-005.jpg
These are only 22.8mm long, but look to be just fine. Here you can see there are 5 bolt threads sticking through, which should be plenty.
http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...8&d=1245199229

*2 Rotors - $85.38 after tax
http://napaonline.com/MasterPages/NO...ront+-+Premium

http://partimages.genpt.com/partimages/625926.jpg

*Mounting Bracket & Hub Centering Kit - $164.47 shipped
https://www.rtmracing.com/xcart/home.php?cat=421

https://www.rtmracing.com/xcart/images/T/rtm-911tmb.jpg

*(4) M12x1.75x30 bolts / M12x1.75x45 bolts / M12 lockwashers - $14.93 after tax
Ace Hardware

*2 Front Brake Lines - $39.95 Shipped
http://gtautosport.com/

http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da...rake_lines.JPG
They sell the kit for $85 shipped typically on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SS-Br...205|240%3A1318
But they told me they'd do just the fronts for 39.95 shipped.
I ordered them for a 2G because I believe that should work. We will see when they come, if they work. They are 23.75" in length measured from tip to tip. I am only going to do the fronts for now, as it'll keep a better price comparison for the Baer kit which also only comes with front lines I believe. I'll get the rear lines too, sometime in the future.

Also, I haven't tried this, but what I've "heard", is stock 1G lines can work if you can get the banjo fitting off the rear calipers of a 1G FWD (mitsu p/n MB004539). Using this fitting will allow you to just keep your stock 1G lines, or upgrade to 1G SS braided lines. They're $25/ea at the dealer, so probably be better if you can find some at a junk yard or parts car. http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...5&d=1244820449

=

$563.18 Total cost AFTER shipping and/or tax.

(compare this to the Baer kit which costs 859.99+shipping/tax)

-----------------------------------------------

Here is some other misc good info:

Calipers:
Front calipers from 94-04 Cobra/Bullit/Mach1 will work as they are all dimensionally the same. The only difference is the 94-98 calipers use 40mm pistons, and the 99-04 use 38mm pistons. There's some aesthetic differences also. Cobra's say Cobra, Bullitt have a picture of a Pony, and Mach1 are just black I believe. But functionally, they are the same, so all of them will work, you can pick whichever ones you prefer. Just depends on whether or not your the kinda man who wants a picture of a pony on your brakes or not :)

http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...Brake-Calipers

great place to get parts, this is where i get my brake parts for my 94 cobra and the prices are pretty decent.

if you go into the kit parts they have pads, rotor, caliper, pad kits. but they come with ss lines for mustangs also. i think you could get a small adaptor made for the mitsu threads to the ford threads from brake and supply, and you should be totaly set

i also hear that you can use the 2g brake line banjo fittings as long as you use the mustang banjo bolts

http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...0%201&comp=LRS
comes with calipers, brackets, and pads

im not sure on the thread sizes, but i think the mustang bolt pattern is 5x110, and the mitsu is 5x114 so i dont know how thats gonna work out with the rotors

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

The rotors fit, except that the hole in the center of the rotor is a bit larger, so that is why the hub centering ring that comes in the kit I linked to above is needed.

I'm not the first person to do this, but I'm having a hard time finding specifics on all this. Things like which lines I need, if the adapters work for both 1g's and 2g's, stuff like that. So once I figure it all out, I'll have it all right here, the exact parts needed, and hopefully the cheapest prices I can find, so it'll just a good list in one spot, of everything needed so anyone can do it. Because right now I'm scouring like 4 different boards, and 100 threads, to find the info I need.

Not sure if you have considered vr4 calipers on cobra rotors, there is a lot of info on that conversion, plus they say mitsubishi! Here is a diagram for the vr4 caliper adapter for cobra rotors if you don't want to pay $147, you could have someone local cut them.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

I did look into that idea, but from what I've read since the Mitsu ones are 4-piston, they are larger, and stick outwards further, requiring a wheel spacer in many situations. I don't want to run a wheel spacer.

they will fit behind your rims

So if anyone has any more info on putting COBRA brakes on, please share, because that is what I'm doing.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

i did some research last night, im pretty sure its

2g banjo bolt lines
cobra banjo bolts
cobra calipers, pads and rotors
centering rings
and the adaptor bracket to run the calipers

its still going to run 600 plus dollors if you go with a kit though, or you could get the new calipers, there are sets for 330 right now with pads.

get cheap parts store rotors and call it a day

At least buy a quality blank (Brembo, Centric, RotorPro, etc.) so you're not warping them after a few 1/4 mile passes. Your choice in pads will be nearly endless; a good semi-metallic would probably be all your need.

You should be able to call Techafit, tell them what you're doing, and have them make you up some custom SS brake lines.

Use our discount at craigs store. Just use any front brakes for the core he will not care.

Yeah, I'm really hoping he can just hook me up with some calipers, and maybe some rotors, we'll see. I'm still waiting on some responses from him about it all. Is he still out of town?

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

If Craig doesn't get back to me by tomorrow, then I'm buying from elsewhere. I think I already found the deals that I'm going to go after.

You just need to call the store and talk to him

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

I have had similar plans to upgrade to a larger rotor(the cobra) and retain my stock calipers. Although i drive a 2g gsx, does anyone have the dimensions or the blue prints for making your own brackets?

Halon 06-10-2009 12:15 AM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

When I get mine, I'll try and post up the dimensions. But also keep in mind you need the hub centering ring made too. In the end I don't think the 150 for the kit I linked is that bad of a deal.

And Mark, I have no idea which store he works at, so no idea what number to call. So I was just trying to talk to him through PM's.

I just removed a lot of my links because it was getting kind of messy. But I left the link I used up there. They are the cheapest I've found. But also keep in mind, that I got the Cobra calipers. You can save $30 and get the Bullitt calipers if you want. They are the same part, just instead of saying Cobra, it's a picture of a Pony. I spent the $30 because I just didn't want a pony on my car :) They also include the pads which is nice.

There is someone on Ebay that is also selling the Bullitt calipers w/ pads for $220 shipped. It's maybe $5 more then the company that I linked above, but another option.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

being that i have a red cobra i think the red cobras are in order, i remember that site selling them for over 300 bucks last time i checked but it looks like they have an awesome price.

i ill probly buy all new parts for my cobra and swap the older stuff over to my talon if you have some good luck with this

Halon 06-10-2009 10:17 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

The Bullitt calipers are red also.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

I'm not the only one running this either. I'm just trying to consolidate all the info I'm finding all over the place, into one spot to make it easier for others.

All in all it's going to be very similar to the Baer kit, but a couple hundred dollars less.

What year is your Cobra? If you replace all of the stuff on the Cobra, I'd for sure put the old stuff on the Talon. Apparently it's quite the difference.

viridionplague 06-10-2009 10:25 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

yea the baer kits calipers are made by pbr, same as the cobras are.

i thought about this a while ago as well but just never got around to it.

tell you one thing, my cobra at a few hundred pounds more than a dsm stops like mad

Halon 06-11-2009 08:35 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

Found a vendor who would sell me just the front ss-braided brake lines for a 2G for cheap because usually the kits come with the lines for all 4 corners, but really all I need is the fronts for this setup.

I "think" 2G lines will work, but we will see.

So I updated the first post with all the money I've spent thus far. Trying to price out some Rotors now, which should be the last component I need.

Kracka 06-11-2009 08:37 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

You're not doing rear SS lines too?

Halon 06-11-2009 09:17 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

Eventually, yes. But right now I'm simply focusing on upgrading the fronts, and trying to compare this kit I'm putting together, to the Baer kit. And as far as I know, the Baer kit does not come with rear SS lines.

Something else I'll post up that I just found out about the lines. The problem is the Cobra calipers need a banjo style line (just like 2G's). So I ordered up those 2G lines, hoping they'll work.

Something I just found out, now that I already paid for the damn 2G lines, is that on 1G FWD models, there is a fitting on the rear brakes. Rear FWD 1G brakes have banjo style calipers. But there is a fitting that converts the Banjo caliper, to accent a standard line. You can simply steal that fitting from a FWD 1G rear caliper, and install it onto the Cobra front caliper, and a stock 1G line will fit right up.

Here's a picture from CAPS showing the part.

viridionplague 06-11-2009 09:23 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

good to know as i already have ss lines for a 1g, at least you didnt have ss lines to begin with, so either way the upgrade will help

Halon 06-11-2009 09:35 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

If the 2G lines even work. I am having a hard time finding info on lines. So I just decided to spend the $40. I'm still going to try and search out some of those fittings in case the 2G Lines don't work.

viridionplague 06-11-2009 10:19 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

btw you project price is 559.97 not 466.68, as you have posted in your first post

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

double post

Halon 06-11-2009 11:48 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

The Total I have, is how much money I have spent so far,and 466.68 is how much I've spent so far.

Don't add the cost of the rotors yet. I haven't boughten rotors yet, hence why it still has $xxx next to the word rotors. The $93 I put underneath the rotor section is just one option I'm considering, but haven't decided on those yet.

viridionplague 06-11-2009 11:55 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

ah i see, i think the 100 bucks on rotors is a good point though as both the place you listed, and buyfordracing, both places are about 100 bucks for the pair for baer blanks

im sure you could find higher or lower depending on how picky you are but the baer blanks are pretty standard

Halon 06-12-2009 10:32 AM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

Got ahold of Brookdale Mits, and those little fittings are $25/ea. So scrap that idea, unless I can find some from a parts car or a junk yard.

viridionplague 06-12-2009 10:45 AM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

25 bucks is high but if you already have ss lines, i guess its just one of those things, also if the 2g lines dont work it should still be an option to be tested out. plus im sure you could hit up you pull or some where and get them cheaper

i still do think the 2g lines should work though.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

Me too. I'm off today so I'm thinking about going to John's Auto Parts and seeing if they have anything laying around.

Halon 06-13-2009 01:22 PM

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

John's has absolutely nothing.

I also got ahold of Craig, and sounds like the price he can get me on rotors is the exact same price the O'Reilly's ny my house can get them for, which is around $45 each. I'm going to see what the other parts stores can get them for. And if none of them are much better, I think I'm going to go with those ones off Ebay that I linked to, as they are about the same price, and are also Zinc coated.
