WTF: Tranny minus 4th Gear = GAY
I don't know where to put this, so mods move where you see fit
92 AWD 5 spd, Shep Stage 3: Chromoly forks, 4 spyder I did a pull from a stop tonight. Went into 4th gear and some HORRIBLE noises. Car goes into every gear just fine, and now in forth makes BAD sounds. Tranny sounds like there are pieces dancing around inside. WTF. I just want to part out my car now. FML. I'll call Shep on Monday. |

You most likely stripped 4th gear, welcome to the club, ive done it 3 times! Fourth gear is the most prone to breaking, takes the most load, unless of course you floor it in 5th which most people dont do.
If fourth gear is stripped, then the countershaft is done too and anything else the metal chunks have gone into. Sorry to say but usually means the transmission needs a complete overhaul. |

I have always used Pennzoil Syncromesh. John Shepard said that was fine. Maybe 2 years ago I paid $1900 for my Stage 3 rebuild with a 4 spider center diff and optional chromoly shift forks. It had "heavy duty" 3+4 but not double syncro'd.
So wtf. This car keeps sucking money from me! If this can not be somewhat cheaply repaired, then I'm gonna part this out. |

Synchromesh is thinnnn shit in my opinion, especially for the decent power you were making.
Try some NEO or heavyweight shockproof next time; if there is a next time. |

Heavyweight shockproof is a good idea, but it will make it harder to shift as it will make the syncros to slippery.

Synchromesh and Synchroshit are both garbage. Using Shockproof in the transmission is also a bad idea since its not a GL-4 and its not designed for daily-driver use (its meant to be used on a racecar that has fluid changes after every race).

I used the BG Syncroshift II for a while on my 1G and loved it, but I love the redline cocktail moar. Drain the fluid and see what kinda chunks come out.

You can do it on the cheap if you can get your hands on a evo 3 tranny.
Mine takes the beating. Hell it came out of a ralliart rally car and I have been far from nice to it. There are guys in NZ making well over 900 on drag cars with the stock evo 3 trannys. I use to run the thin shit also. Then put in the redline mix and it shifted better now it has redline heavyweight in when I replaced the twindisk for the hks twindisk |

Mine has the original clutch and with 45k on it now, and I'm sure i drive harder then most people do.

Min lasted 38k: 21k miles stock, 9k miles@266whp/240wtq, 8k miles @305-320whp/300-320wtq, and about 10 parking lot launches. The parking lot launches are what ultimately killed it. I drive aggressive too, but ultimately, launching kills stock clutches faster than anything else.
I gotta say though, I didn't realize that 4th gear on DSMs pooped out at 400wtq. Suck. |

Yeah, at these power levels, the trans case actually starts flexing, causing the gears from the counter shaft and input shaft to pull away from each other. Now the gear contact is on a weaker part of the tooth. Its why I shimmed up my counter shaft and input shaft up tighter to help prevent this, but does put more load on the bearings obviously.

Uh Shep does not recommend BG Syncroshift.
Taken directly from his sight ---------------------------------------------------------------- There are several gear oils that will work depending on horsepower or intended use. For most transmissions we recommend Redline MT90 or Pennzoil Synchromesh. For drag use or high horsepower cars please contact us. Please let us know if you need any Redline gear oil. ---------------------------------------------------------------- I run two quarts of Mt-90 for friction modifier, and two quarts of lightweight shockproof. Overfilled on purpose so that the gears dont pull the sump dry from using thicker lubricant. I may run Heavyweight in the summer. Even if Shep recommended Syncroshift, I wouldn't use it but on a stock dsm. |

Good to see he finally changed his recommendation! That Penzoil stuff is no good either though b/c it sheers just as badly (its a GM fluid designed for a specific truck transmission).
