Beater Eagle Summit

So I just purchased what should be labeled a mirage from 1quick4
I will be using it as a DD for a while. I think this would be a great budget project.

http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...9&d=1190083478

My plan for this car is going to be in two phases

First phase is to just do small performance upgrade with parts that I have laying around. Starting with the suspension, I have a rear sway bar from my N/T Eclipse that I am sure would fit on the back.
The other Suspension upgrade I have heard was that a 1G AWD suspension would fit into this car. Can anyone confirm this or has done this mod yet?

It feels like this little car has the potential to handle. I don't want to lower it much, I am thinking Ice racing and rally crossing for right now till something major happens to the motor or transmission.

Motor is just the 4g15 with 4 on the floor. I am going to run it till something breaks. It may receive a N/T throttle body but thats about it...

*I am kind of sick of having project but not doing anything with them. I would like to have this be the opposite. I want to drive it and beat on it and have fun with it. I am sure this little hatch will be able to take it.

2nd Phase, eventually I will face the fact that the car should have be AWD. I have so many spare DSM parts laying around the place that it should be just a cheap project. (Meaning I am not going to stick very much money into the car in the first place)

I have the Hyundai Engine mount and the automatic transmission mount (however I don't think it uses the automatic transmission mount in the car)

I will probably need the axles from a Turbo mirage.

There is a Colt sitting at the U pull lot that has a hydraulic clutch. Should I pull the petal and the Master and slave clutch cylinder?

I also have a spare 3 bolt rear end out of my eclipse

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...g?t=1263831452

So if anyone has any helpful advice please feel free to add. I know some of you have more experience in the AWD swap department.
I just would like a complete list of what I am going to need and gather before I do the swap. I should have most of the parts laying around.

It has the satan badge on the back of it which now is its new nick name, plus it is red which makes it more funny...

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

I think the first order of business should be taking it to the ice!

I would pull the slave, master, lines, etc. from the other car. If you ever go 4g63, that 4 speed won't handle it and you'll go to a dsm setup. That means hydro clutch.

Not sure on the suspension part of it. I do think dsm springs work up front, but I have no idea about the rear.

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

Go to the AWD section on 4g61t.org. It should have all the info you will need.

That thing is a beast, it towed my 2g around DB when it had a nitrous back fire.

can't wait to see what you do with it.

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

If you want to know anything on how to swap it let me know. I have done an awd swap to one of them before and have all the parts to swap the wifes this spring.

The awd sus will fit in the car. You need to use the oem rear springs on any awd shock that is good for 2in drop. For the front 90% of the guys cut 1 to 2 coils out of the spring with out the honda bonce problems.

If you want to go 4g63
90 dsm harness
Dsm tranny
Dsm 1/2 shaft
Mirage turbo axels. Dsm ones are to long
Any 1g tranny.
Turbo mirage front and rear roll stop mounts or mod dsm mounts. (I made the front one that did not come with the wifes car)
Tranny mount mirage turbo
Upper engine mount turbo mirage or mod a 1g mount.

I can go on about it but any way just ask me I will let you know what can be done on the cheap with dsm parts

It towed that S/C 3000GT too!

I always wanted to do something with it, just never any time or room anymore.

I've always had a feeling that the Scummit was destined for greatness.
Hopefully it likes it's new home.

If possible, put both cars in the same garage and do the swap at the same time!

ANYWAY...

The problem with the car is that it isn't the Turbo version so the motor mounts are going to be the hold up. I am probably going to have to make a couple but from what I heard some of the hyundai motor mount were the same as the turbo mirage. When I was at U pull I pulled most of the mounts off of the mirage and just have them in a box. Do you remember which ones work?

Where would be the best place to get the turbo mounts? Or just fab them up?

Other things on the list (trying to make it complete)

Shifter from a DSM? (currently a 4 speed)
Hydraulic clutch from a 5 speed? or can the cable clutch be modified?

I would love a tach in the car so I am checking all of the junkyards for one. However they are kind of rare...

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

it will be getting the swap this spring some time. if you want to do it at the same time that will not be a problem if I have the extra room.

For the mounts you can just fab them up. It is not hard. Also realy not need the roll stop mounts if you go awd you can use dsm ones then sinse you need to get rid of the stock front to back roll stop brace. I can get you a part number for the upper engine mount.

On the hydro set up. Find a hatch or 4door 89-92 for the parts. For the shifter you can use the turbo mirage set up or a shifter out of a 93-95 mirage it has a shorter shifter in it and works really well. That is what I put in the wifes hatch.

For the others.
Just use a 90 dsm harness and make a harness adaptor to go from the dsm to mirage dash harness.

Also most of the guys on 4g61t are complety dumb and hack it together. The one guy to get the adaptor harness and motor mounts from is 89mirageman. He is a great guy he is also on the other mirage board mirageperformance.net. I have sold a lot of parts to him and bought and traded with him also.
If you want to know a lot about the car I would go to the mirageperformance board.

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

Hey, I am not liking these front brakes....I have to change one of the broken lugs also

TKR I know you changed to a 5 lug, how did you deal with these front brakes?
I am thinking I am going to have to find a galant VR4 hubs or something. I would like to stay 4 lug.

I am going to leave the rear drums as is. When I swap to the AWD, those will have disks.

Besides the drums seem to work just fine with the hand brake:smile:

TkrPerformance 01-22-2010 01:04 PM

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

You need
4x114 hubs
93-95 mirage kunckels
Or you can use the full galant knuckel and hub but will have a ton of pos camber the is hard to take out.

In the wifes car it has 1g dsm hubs and mirage knuckels from a 4g 93-95.

You then can bolt on big brakes on the car if you want to swap to a 15in rims

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

Sweet. Makes me want to finish what I had in mind with the AWD Colt Wagon.
From what I can see, my Colt's hub has the same part number as all other Colts. Meaning, at least the axles should spline in.
I think it would be fun to go to the DSM Cookout with a bunch of 4G63 swapped CSMs.

If you want to do it. I have a shop press. I can swap them all around for you for a case of beer.

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

So the car is kind of at a stand still right now due to crappy brakes...

http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/3...024x768og2.jpg

This is what the 3g CSM brake look like... Kind of crappy and no one has the rotors around for them, or carry calipers, or master cylinders....
They are clamped to the hub by 4 bolts. You have to remove the hub if you have to remove the rotor. Sucks... Weird design coming from mitsubishi...

:Misc.block: I really need input here!

This is the time where I decide to go 4 lug or 5 lug non clamped rotor

I might as well convert it over to a free rotor while this is happening

If 4 lug I could just modify the hubs (grind down the edges so a rotor will fit over the hub) to work with another rotor like this

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/3...024x768vb8.jpg

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/8...024x768xb1.jpg

Then later I could do the 2 piston VR-4 rotor but would have to find 15" 4 lug wheels (which I don't have)

If 5 lug, I would just have to go to the u pull yard and pull 5 lugs plus brakes plus rotors which there are plenty out there

The negative side is I would have to do the back and Convert my drum brakes to disk brakes and modify the parking brake somehow... which there are parts out there but eventually I would like to go AWD anyway.
For right now I would like just to keep it FWD because I don't even have the 4g63 swapped into it yet.

I have 5 lug tires. DSM tires with good tread.

The main question is with the 5 lug, can I / should I use dsm wheels and tires? Or are they too big? Would they even fit underneath?

I could've sworn I sold you 4 15" 4 lug wheels with the car ;)

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

Ok it is freaking freezing out...

Haven't done much because I am still at a stand still with the brakes...

I have collected some very important parts though

I have my Honda radiator 2" duel core

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...g?t=1264717617
Mirage turbo axles + half shaft

all motor mounts needed plus some poly inserts in a couple of them

http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../Parts1001.jpg

Plus I have my 4g csm knuckles I can play around with

Are these 4 X 100? I really wish they went with a standard 4 lug pattern...:madashell:

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...g?t=1264717658

So I am getting a good collection of what I need...

I am finding out that converting the rear from a 4 lug Drum to 5 lug disk is tricker (and more expensive!) then I thought and I am tempted just to do the AWD rear frame swap just to get it over with. I do have all of those parts together so the only thing that is stopping me is a warm garage Would it be cheaper to do the swap?

Anyone want to donate their garage to a poor CSM person :violin:

I wish the car was moving right now but maybe I will just have to piece something together to get it to move. I don't know how though...
I am going to try to keep this project under $1000 anyway I can! so any helpful, cheap advice, (also accepting donations) would be greatly appreciated!

Andrew7dg 01-28-2010 05:38 PM

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

So whats left?
Motor (I can piece something together! with my blocks sitting around)
Trans (I do have a FWD trans laying around)
Fuel line?
1" square tube

TKR, please tell me I can massage the gas tank to work behind the AWD system so I don't have to have a fuel cell in my hatch :)

craig 01-28-2010 05:50 PM

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

might have a place to do the swaps this spring to both cars if you want to. I will be modding a awd 1g gas tank to fit in the car
by the way this is mark

also 4*100 is the norm 4*114 is not that is why the mirage went to 4*100 in a 4g

Awesome project Andrew!

We should do one of our high compression 2.4 builds for this one...

I assume you are familiar with Jason Tanin's Lil' Evo? (http://www.lilevo.com/)

IIRC, he even made a video on doing the 4g6x + awd swap to the CSM.

Yeah... and I own that DVD because I was trying to figure out how you would mount the rear sub frame. The information is good in it

However he put a label on the CD and all of the DVD/computers are having a hard time playing it...

The high compression 2.4L is the engine plan because I really don't own a 4g63 motor but I have most of the parts to make the 2.4 build.

Low end torque+low weight car+AWD= should be fun! or I am still going to brake stuff.. we will just have to see.

This whole car is going to be a mutant of hack together parts! MUhahaha!

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

So to keep update, I installed the new Honda radiator into the car. The old rad had a leak in it and sprayed antifreeze on the exhaust manifold when it was warmed up. Put on a new thermostat.

The car warms up, keeps a SOLID temp and doesn't overheat! I am very happy with it.
I haven't installed the electric fan yet. I want to build a shroud for it and bolt the fan to the shroud.
I don't know if I should use those zip ties on the radiator or not. I really don't want to. I think the fan shroud should work better.

Nothing big but now I feel better about driving longer distances and not needing to carry a gallon of antifreeze.

Just to note, I love those snow tires on that car. The car handles really well in the snow. It is actually one of the best cars I have driven in the snow (the eclipse AWD had street tires on it)

Now it is time for some Ice/snow Racing!

Re: Beater Eagle Summit

So this isn't a big HP thread or Lets lighten the car with tube frames

However I did manage to do another upgrade using factory mitsu parts

I have a 4g15 engine

I swapped in a ECU from a 4g37 1.8L
Also the 210cc injectors
MAS
And 50mm TB (tried a 60mm but the engine didn't like it at all)

Everything swapped over really simple and the engine feels like it has a little more power. It idles a lot better! Probably because the Idle Air Controller was shot on the 4g15

The manifold looks strangely like a Ford Probe 2.2L Turbo
Hmm....

2.2L manifold
http://www.stevensparts.com/images/E...FORD/58348.JPG

1.5L Manifold
http://base0.googlehosted.com/base_m...cdfeb610&hl=en

Cylinder head
http://www.allhead.com.au/Identifica...20steering.jpg

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/89-97...ht_4941wt_1010

So they make a kit also but I think I can do it for much less then that, plus I have so many spare parts laying around.

I just want to state that this isn't right at ALL!!! but it is kind of fun...

*pointing out for all the 4g63 people I do have all the stuff I need to swap in a 4g63/or 64 motor when I blow this one up.
