What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I am going to be posting this question on a few different forums (mitsustyle, EvoMN, and MNSubaru), then sharing the responses with all the sites involved. So, post up anything you think makes an Evo better than an STi, and why if you really feel like it.
Let the games begin! Results from other sites: EvoMN.net MNSubaru.com |
Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
Tough question, 90% of the Evo being "better" comes down to personal preference and driving feel. The Evo is easier to work on and seems to better handle increased power levels over stock. Hopefully Shane will add the advantages of the Evo ECU, but from talking to him it sounds like the Evo is easier to tune plus we have all the Tephra hacks available. I'm sure you've seen all the test comparison specs so I won't bother going into those. Another big thing that's often over-looked is how much more spacious the Evo interior (especially backseat) is.

what makes you think the evo is better?...

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
This is coming from memory so someone please correct me if I am wrong:
The STI (2004-2007) is faster in a straight line than an Evo VIII, but the Evo VIII stops faster and turns better. The Evo IX is faster in a straight line than the VIII and also the STI with the same handling and braking characteristics of the VIII. |
Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
Because it has a 4G63 instead of a BMW motorcycle engine

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
For Rally Purposes, Subaru has dominated the scene
I didn't see a evo make the longest jump on new years... I think it is a dumb question Quote:
mitsustyle, EvoMN, and MNSubaru? I mean it also depends on what you are talking about or what you are comparing. I see Subaru have their own magazine which evo owners don't have Subaru has been in the market here for quite some time and now are cheep and affordable. Evos here in the states, newest one Evo 8? Subarus have multi level trims and they can interchange easily! Impreza WRX STi we have either a lancer or an evo No mid range and no parts can swap in beween the two without a lot of hassle. I am defending subarus here because i know we have a bunch of mitsubishi people I am indifferent. Take them to the track, rally, or whatever and figure it out... Thats what made them have such good competition between each other for years!!! |
Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I don't see subaru's making the power that evo's do as easily and evo's hold a sh*t ton of records. I don't see that coming from subaru either. Isn't the fastest all out drag suby only in the 9's?

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I test drove an STi recently, and it just felt like shit from a driver's standpoint. No gearbox feel, no tire feedback, no engine feel in the pedals, the car was incredibly numb and dead in every aspect. While it may perform comparably, there's just no logical reason to choose it over the Evo if you're going to do more than cruise around in it.
And there's no chance in hell I'm tossing this car around a field. If it were more of a beater, sure, but not in the shape it's in. |

Everything minus the interior gauges and interior plastics and clutch options and peeling wings.

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I haven't been in an Evo yet, only at the Autoshow. My preference on the Evo interior is that it's my kind of 'food' I guess I could say. It's not too ugly, not too nice. It's nice, simple and to the point. I've heard from many that it is cheap though.
My friend has a 02 WRX turbo (not an STi), the engine itself is the most solid engine I've ever seen. I've seen and been in what kind of abuse it has taken. The only issue with it was the transmission after that abuse, which isn't surprising. Interior-wise, my galant has more room. I can actually "lay" back in my car, whereas in the WRX, I was only at a sitting position, close to about a 100 degree when sitting. The WRX as a four door car, I'm expecting some more leg room but I don't, whenever I go sit in the rear of my car, I have room for my legs to breathe. I'd much prefer the Evo because they're more easy to modify, tune and do simple maintainences. The interior is more of my style, even though it may be cheap(dash). As for the WRX STi, to me, it feels like a regular WRX with STi stickers and the engine. |
Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I am not sure what your trying to accomplish here? this question is all opinion based and I only see it starting flames. anyways to answer I PERSONALLY like the evo better I have had TONS of rides in both. my old roommate had a stage 2 sti and we drove that thing everywhere, I have also had the pleasure to ride in about 7 different evos. I think the evo is better looking on the outside and inside, I enjoy the feel of them better, and they seem like they had handle more power better.

I think a lot of the "engines are garbage" comments stem from issues regarding poor tuning and/or improper engine oil choices.

Also, people need to get over the Ken Block leg-humping. He isn't the greatest driver to ever grace motorsports with a presence. |
Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
Hands down the evo engine engineering is better.

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I'd race toyota...they never stop accelerating!

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I'll agree with the "Ken Block isn't the greatest driver" comment. Seems he's totalled 2 wrx's in the last 2 Ojibwe's. Plus, he drives for Ford now anyways.
Subaru's do have an extremely safe body structure. Ask Mark Utecht about that. During a blizzard he got into something like a 20 or so car pileup on I35. He ended up rearending a one ton pickup (cracking the rear diff on the truck) and then was rearended by a one ton carpet van. Afterwards he could open and close ALL 4 doors. |

Funny thing is, is that ken block drives a Ford now. That statement holds no weight. Kracka is right. Sponsorship money.

Evo: 1. Can go a lot further on the stock turbo 2. You don't have to pull the engine just to swap cams 3. Can easily handle 30+ psi of boost on stock head bolts 4. IMHO, Evo is better looking 5. Take mods better. 6. Evo ECU isn't NEARLY as picky. STi: 1. Sound cooler 2. Make torque easier 3. more sideways/flat billed hats 4. more bright colored wheels That's about it for me. Quote:
Accomplish? nothing really... I just wanted to get everybody's opinions and see what the owners of each type of car think is better than the other. Remember, I drive a Subaru... Quote:

Safety features? meh, both cars do horrible in all the crash tests, be realistic, no one buys either car for their safety features. |

subaru dropped him and than dropped out of wrc completely. hes really good at crashing cars...$$$

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
My comment wasn't about crash tests. It was real world testing. It is a consideration of some. I know most people will buy a car depending on reliable power and good handling characteristics. But I thought I would add one other side of things. Don't have any experience with Evo's in real world crashes so I left that out of my comments.

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
Subarus seem much more solid in accidents. Not a deciding factor for me, but always something to consider.

Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I think evo's are better from a modding perspective. the engine has much more potential and a better bang for the buck upgrade path. I'd also give the evo the edge in suspension design. both cars have essentially the same brakes so that's a wash. depending on what year cars you're talking I'll take the STI's 6spd gearbox and drivetrain. I also liked the STI's interior slightly better with the exception of the fatboy seats. The STIs frameless windows annoy me too.
I'd take either one - I don't really have a major preference aside from the fact that I own an STI. Subarus in north america have better rally support not only from a parts perspective but from a factory perspective. SOA mails me a $200 check just for showing up at a regional rally held in conjunction with a national. So that's $800 subaru has paid me in the past 8 months. Hell, even Mazda has factory contingency money in US rally... |
Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
WTF? just trying to create drama?
On subaru forums What makes a STi Better then an EVO? Just creating hate... On a side note I am not a Ken Block follower but I just wanted to point out I don't see many Evos being driven like that anymore. It probably has to do with sponsorship but come on I want to see what the evo can DO!!! The best car out of the bunch is the Evo 6.5 IMO http://www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~tlduong/kevinh3.jpg |
Re: What makes an Evo better than an STi?
I think you need to take a history lesson first, and then look at this question.
It's all about personal preference. Some evo's can do things better that some STi's can't, and vice-versa. They've both been very good at WRC, autocross, tracking, you name it. |
