Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Looking to get this to hopefully get my ass more active.
Anyone have any suggestions on any similar priced bikes? http://www.walmart.com/ip/26-Mens-Mo...-Bike/13969564 |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
if you check craigslist you should be able to get a better bike for that price.
|
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
I was thinking about that, but I don't know shit about bikes, haven't had one in 14 years
|
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
dont buy a $100 full suspension bike. At that price it is totally just for looks and most likely rides like poop. If you want to ride around on pavement/ smooth trails and gravel get a "hybrid". They are comfortable riding position like a mtn bike, but have larger diameter wheels like a road bike so they are faster. Their quite a bit of fun to ride.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
I think what you should be asking are what brands you should be looking at. Then once you have the brands that would work, look it up on CL. I dont know enough about bikes to really make a suggestion. I was looking but forgot which brands i was looking at.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Thanks 9, i appreciate the help.
I just ran thru CL nothing really good there esp. for $100 |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
$100 really doesn't buy you much of a bike. Any non department store brand is going to be similar quality, espically at lower price points. They are all made in the same asian factories and get different stickers slapped on them. Shimano and Sram components are good stuff, but they do have many different levels of quality.
What kind of riding do you want to do? |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
I see Viscous got a hold of Tom's avatar again :rollinglaugh:
95tsi is a big mountain bike fanatic, see what he says. |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
It will end up being mostly street, but I want to do trail type stuff with it too.
|
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
well, if you really plan to take it on mountain bike trails, not just bike paths you will want a tru mtn bike. If your budget is 100, you can either get a new department store bike, that will be new and shiny, but heavy and probably never work 100% correctly. Or buy a older used "real" bike. It will not be shiny and new, but it should have better quality components that if taken car of work correctly.
something like this http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hn...692928285.html |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Dept. store brands only come in a few sizes, and I've never found one that will fit anyone older than 10. They are also lower quality and put together by a Walmart/Target employees, nuff said. Hit up your local bike store. They have much better quality, the knowledge to get you onto the right size bike and will help you pick the right kind of bike for what kind of riding you'll be doing.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
I ride a 2006 Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc and love it. A good bike is definitely worth spending the money on. $350 will get your a Specialized Hardrock Base, maybe cheaper if you buy a closeout model. Some bike shops sell used bikes too so you can watch for those.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Just look on craigs list for a desent used bike. use key words like Trek Giant Specialized schwinn Etc. and you 'll find something in the $100 range. If you really get into bikeing then spent the money on a new Bike. The department store bikes are junk.
I bought a late 90's schwinn Mnt bike last year for $40 it needed a little tweaking but was a great bike. put over 200 miles on it in 1/2 a season last year. Biking is a great way to get out and get exsersize I lost around 30 pounds since this time last year. |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Real men ride 20".
But yeah, mountain bikes come in all sorts of variaties. You can't be expecting much for $100 unless it's used,I have over $1k into my 20". So I'd check out CL/garage sales if you haven't been told that 100 times already. Also, check out JensonUSA, they have a Closeout section that has had some MTN bikes go through. Trek, Giant, Schwinn, those are all good brands. Diamondback is a great brand too, but don't bother looking at online reviews, they've been caught redhanded 5 starring their own products. Oh yeah, and in some towns, you can go to the police station, tell them you've had your mountain bike stolen, they'll ask for a general description, say a black mountain bike(or your preferable color), and then you can go see the bikes they have found...;) P.S. this is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated. |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Be careful with the cheap Schwinn and Diamondback bikes sold at department stores...its just a sticker slapped on a crappy bike. The good ones come from dedicated bike stores.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
my advice is don't buy a department store bike. $100 won't buy you much in terms of an actual decent bike.
|
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Look into Specialized, Trek, or Gary Fischer. They are all quality bikes.
|
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
screw the $100 wally world bike. You kinda get what you pay for here. Not saying you need to go out and drop $2k on something but if you can put together a couple hundred you will get a much better bike.
Best thing to do is go waste some time at a bike shop and make sure you get the proper sized bike. The worst thing to do is get the wrong size cause you will hate every second of it. Most of the time the shop will help out with any adjustments for the first yr or so, dept stores lack any sort of service if its needed. You dont really need to stick with the major name brands. There are plenty of other companys out there with great products. The good side to the name brands is generally a little cheaper. I'd suggest getting a mountain bike and then you can use if for anything. usually there are people selling parts and everything here: http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=18 |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Well i'm home and I should be ready for a bike any day now, took everyone's advice and I am looking at some CL bikes just to see if i actually use it this year.
Found a lot of "specialized" brand bikes, I might take a trip to the schwinn cycle by me and get more educated. |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Go to Erik's too, they always have a great selection of Specialized bikes and their staff is generally very friendly and knowledgeable.
|
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Aaron, I've got a used full suspension bike I'll sell you for $100. It could use new tires but is pretty decent other than that. It's a good quality bike, can't remember which one, I've had it for a few years.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
^Sweet, I'll call you later I will be around anyway, if not call me when you get off work.
I have found some good stuff on craigs, but to be honest guys I'm gonna get some cheap shit just to make sure this is a new hobby not a new fad. |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Yeah, it's better to buy from someone you know than to go to some random house and possibly get donkey punched. :)
|
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
Erik's bike shop, or Penn Cycle. I bought my GT at Penn cycle in the summer of 2000. It was a 1999 model (but it was brand new), and I paid $300. Nice frame, front suspension, and most importantly, it fit me. Making sure you get a bike that fits you properly will make riding fun instead of awkward.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
^Thx, I learned that today at Pioneer cycle, I tried some different sizes and seats and such.
Bikes are light nowadays. Steve give me a call when you get home. Samantha said we don't like to get donkey punched. lol |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.
mountain biking is my new favorite hobby. Definitely check out http://www.morcmtb.org/ if you want some people to hit the trails with or more beginner mountain bike tips.
Ive got a Trek 3700 with front suspension I could sell you for $100, it was my first trails bike but I ended up getting a full suspension bike. (which in retrospect im not sure was a good idea) You don't really need a full suspension bike to ride the trails, a lot of people ride with NO suspension at all. |
Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.

Raleigh is a good make right? |
