'03 BBY Evo
Went and picked up my evo last night in Moorhead and couldn't be happier so far.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4971526_n.jpg Not a whole lot done to it and I don't really plan on doing anything crazy with it. I got a little carried away with my 2g and weight and trying to push the power limits which ended up pushing my pocket book and not being able to enjoy the car. MODS: full exhaust (including o2 housing)-megan racing full hard intercooler piping- buschur licp & injen uicp BOV- greddy full air intake- hks pipe w/ k&n filter mbc- halman set @31 psi on E85 walbro 255 fuel pump - might throw my boost a pump on it for shits and giggles FIC 950cc injectors AEM o2 Wideband AEM Boost gauge - Will be swaping it out for my 5 bar AEM gauge from my eclipse HKS turbo timer ARP headstuds ACT heavy duty street clutch SS Clutch line- Russell Konig runaway wheels (gunmetal grey), wrapped in toyo proxies - might end up selling these OEM Enkei wheels with blizzak snow tires Short shifter of some sort Sweet (aka cold) metal shift knob Gangsta lights that illuminate the pedals Looks like 35% tint? Future mods: Maybe a bigger turbo? I liked the little bit of lag on my dsm for daily driving Cams sooner than later Lower it after the winter Some new tail lights, can't decide which ones to go with yet but don't like the stock ones It was tuned by Ron at RS and put down 342 whp / 368 wtq on his dyno. I'm hoping to have Shane look at the tune and get it on his dyno. Maybe pick his brain on if it is worth it to do speed density on a daily driver Evo. Probably wont be updating the thread alot but thought I'd share my new purchase which I'm super pumped about. |
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Wow, how much did you pick up this gem for? Looks pretty mint for an 03.
|
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Nice, congrats
|
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Love the color! How many miles?
|
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Nice pickup! BBY is a cool color, you dont see many of them.
|
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Agreed! Good decision on the color :)
|
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Thanks!
Paid $14,100 for it with 74,xxx miles and the kid was asking $15,500 for it. KBB was around that 14k mark and this has most of what I was looking for mod wise anyways. Not a hell of a deal but good enough for me. Getting to work today was a lot more fun than it was last week! :D |
Re: '03 BBY Evo
love that BBY color. Evo looks awesome with the snow! Must be pretty gangsta to have them lights so you can see the pedals yo! lol. very nice!

Re: '03 BBY Evo
Very nice. :D

Wow, looks like it's in great shape. Congrats on the grab, you'll love it!
|
Re: '03 BBY Evo
congrats on the new car love the color!

Re: '03 BBY Evo
Woohoo! Congrats man! IMHO GSC S2's or nothing else, and do a set of their 5039 beehive drop-in springs at the same time. I ran hks280's and kelford 272's and they were both dandy, but the S2's are the latest and greatest. Check out our $100-at-a-time thread for more simple but effective modding ideas!
Looks like a great base for a great car. Just enjoy it and DRIVE IT! |

Re: '03 BBY Evo
An HTA Green is calling your name.
|
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Maybe I can get somebody to trade my FP HTA 3082 for a nice evo turbo, bu I'm probably just dreaming.
Thanks again for the kind words guys! |
Re: '03 BBY Evo
So what you're saying is you were in Moorhead and didn't call me? Yea you suck. Congrats
|
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Yea didn't get up there until 9:30/10 though and I had to work at 8am the next day. Plus had my gf with me and we both wanted to just go home at that point. I did actually think about it though.
On a side note, this thing feels pretty darn slow. Boooo for having a light ass 2g that made more power than this. |
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Well a simple picture message saying "fargo has one less sweet evo" woulda been sufficient.

Re: '03 BBY Evo
Welcome to the 03 BBY club!!! ;)

Re: '03 BBY Evo
Do any of you guys know any good/cheaper evo exhaust manifolds that are flanged for a dsm turbo? I have that FP HTA 3082 that is just sitting in my garage waiting to be sold. If I can find a cheap option I would love to throw that on there! Looks like Bushur has one that they would sell for $400 and then an o2 housing for $300. Just looking to see if anybody knew of any better options.
Also I was looking at the GSC S2's but those said springs were required. I really just wanted something that preformed a lot better that could be swapped in easily while doing a timing belt job. Do the S2's really need the valve springs? I want to be safe as this is my new daily but do want a little more power out of it. Any reccomendations on cams that wont require the valve springs? Random new picture I took the other day while board in muderapolis with the summer wheels on it. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...A/NewImage.jpg |
Re: '03 BBY Evo
If you want cams that don't require springs look at the Kelford 272's. But remember, springs wear out, and a higher-mileage car may not be able to handle the 7500rpm revs that a younger car could w/ original springs.
I always always recommend the gsc 5039 springs because they are a) cheap($200) and b) a simple drop-in beehive, no major swappage needed and it would be dandy to do right along with your timing belt job. Then just drop in the new cams and you're good to go with a solid 8000rpm redline. I rev'd my stock bottom-end to 8300 a few times w/o issue on these springs. and I guess c) a little bit of insurance if you miss a shift. |
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Looks good, makes me wish mine was done. :(

Re: '03 BBY Evo
That is true and you have a very solid point!
I've only seen people put spring in when the head is off the car. Are the springs something you can do while the head is still on the car? I would like to keep the head on as that is one less headgasket that I would have to buy. I just keep thinking back my little dsm and how that thing would bounce off 8500 when it would just spin in first with stock everything, but it was a munchgsx motor. I want to be on the safer side with this car. haha I definitely have my reading to do on evo stuff! |

I think it was JMF that also has one but it is a tubular one and is 1k+. I'm a budget and don't want a tubular one for daily driving anyways. |
Re: '03 BBY Evo
Ah I see. I'm no expert, but I think you would be hard pressed to find a Evo manifold that is cheaper than that if Buschur can sell that to you for $400.
EDIT: Looks like a nice piece, although I wouldn't want an open o2 dump on my daily, but that's just me. http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-sal...arts-kits.html |
Re: '03 BBY Evo
You can do the springs with the head on the car, you can either pump compressed air into they cylinder to keep the valves closed, use the rope method. Trust me, taking the head off is a longer process on the Evo than it is on a DSM, although it always takes longer the first time.

Re: '03 BBY Evo
PS- sell the turbo and do a real bolt-on with a twin-scroll housing. That's what makes them so appealing imho, not just the fact that they bolt on but the spool characteristics blow single-scroll turbos out of the water. FP Red/Black will spool around 3900/4200 on that car and would probably be perfect for what you're after: a little bit more lag, a lot more power up top! :)

Re: '03 BBY Evo
If you cannot track down the tool you need to remove the valve springs with the head on the car, you're welcome to borrow mine - it works awesome!
