TalonFiero - E85 powered Evolution IX MR
Quick background: I bought an IX MR GG brand new in June of 2006 for $32,500 and it has ran on E85 for 4 years straight, 4500+gallons worth of the good stuff. 11.1@126.5mph is my best time @432hp/395tq DynoDynamics at 31psi.
First Post will be the "Stock Block 2.0 Era." Second post will be about "2.3 Block Era" Moar background: Jan of 2007 http://www.evomn.net/forums/viewtopi...er=asc&start=0 I was already set on going to E85 soon after my 92 tune. It is funny looking back thinking 23psi on 92 was maybe too much boost. My Project thread link on evomn.net http://www.evomn.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5480 April 2007 Sometime in April I converted to E85 with Shane at DB Performance eventually making anywhere from 340-360hp and about the same in TQ depending on the current condition of the car and available fuel. Fall 2008 Before a BIR event in late 2008 Shane@DB did this http://www.evomn.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2876 377hp/377tq car had only two passes at the track and went 11.9 at 118mph. May 2009 Then I bought an FP Red turbo in May of 2009 and Shane did this http://www.evomn.net/forums/viewtopi...ghlight=#35432 432hp/395tq June 2009 Oh noes! I lose to B-Rad in the finals at the first Annual Proving Grounds event put on by MAP. Car ran many 11.1 and 11.2 times that day all around 127mph riding out fourth gear at 8500 rev limiter through the traps (6 speed gearing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KdZnFBNmQ8&hd=1 August 2010 I was approached by FiD and they offered me a chance to test out one of their new stock turbo manifolds and I was very thankful for the opportunity. Here is the writeup on the events: Hot one today. First pull today was 437hp. Car is basically the same as the 443hp run from back in June. Same graph curve, boost, AFR so that was nice to see, just a little less power and though the dyno compensates for weather it was still hot and muggy in the dyno room.. Swapped the MAP ported exhaust manifold out for a FiD tubular manifold on the dyno after a few baseline pulls and it picked up an honest 15+hp and more power pretty much everywhere through out the power band with no real noticeable increase in lag (very slight increase). Graph shows a couple of the MAP ported stock manifold graphed and a couple of the FiD manny. Single best bolt on I have tried outside of turbo and full exhaust. :D Normal Dyno Dynamics Numbers http://dbptuning.com/dynocharts/FID1.jpg Shootout Mode http://dbptuning.com/dynocharts/FID-2SO.jpg August 2010 MOD LIST: Stock engine, never been opened, never had the head off. These guys have been some of the most helpful, knowledgeable and humble guys I have ever had the opportunity to work with in my 15 years of playing around with cars. Anyone can sell you a part, anyone can perform work on a car and collect your money, anyone can have a fast car that makes or does whatever but what matters to me is the enjoyment I get out of that journey to that end goal and then the next. Shane and Danny have made my performance cars more fun than I could ever have imagined. |

2.3 Block - Here I come
August 2010 I spun rod bearing number 1. Shit. I was playing king of the streets and was having entirely to good of a time to care about the 13:1 AFRs. I purchased a parts evo earlier that year from Scheides and had most of the drivetrain still as I planned on building a motor eventually. I started my 2.3 Build. Parts ordered: ACL Race Bearings Mitsu balance shaft elim kit Manley 2.3 forged crank Eagle Rods Manley Stoker Pistons Machine work done by D&D Machining out of Bloomington DB Performance helped with parts and some small issues as I was building my first motor RS Motors helped with some build advice MAP supplied some parts and helped fund my build by purchasing some evo blocks from me http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da..._14_47_291.jpg http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da...010_182836.jpg http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da...917_153251.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...010_183924.jpg Start up: http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/th_015-5.jpg Here is what fuels Trevor when he helps me in the garage! http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/a...evzr/023-2.jpg Trevor said "Once Jim got the suspension back together we took it for a ride. I did talk a little smack about kracka in this video haha. I was drunk I couldn't help it...Forgive me as I was pretty drunk!!" http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/th_027-1.jpg Here are a couple more pics as well: http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/a...evzr/022-1.jpg http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/a...evzr/019-1.jpg http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/a...evzr/024-4.jpg At this time I sent in my FP Red turbo to be converted to an FP Black I also sold my 6 speed and brought Scheides' old 5 speed in to DB Performance for their Tranny rebuild service. Performed the 6 speed to 5 speed swap without much issue. I felt like I had been dodging a bullet running higher power through the 6 speed. |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
November 2010 Dyno session does not go well, we determine my head must be bad. Car had uncontrollable knock issues and ran poorly under boost. I knew it had a couple hairline cracks but I wanted to try it out anyway. Also it seemed I had some bent valves after performing a leakdown test. Smoked pretty badly on WOT pulls on the dyno. Car drove fine enough but performance was severely lacking. Car is also running on speed density.
Here are the cracks on some of he combustion chambers once I yanked the head. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...128_003457.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...128_003508.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...128_003503.jpg Found another MIVEC head in Nov and had DB Performance perform the head work. Bit of porting and 1mm oversized supertech valves put it. March 2011 After fixing the head I put 2400 miles on the new motor. This past Thursday I visited DB Performance for another dyno session. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...dium/Dyno1.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...dium/Dyno2.jpg Boost drops a bit and I will try to fix that with a stronger WG and by running a BCS inline with the MBC. Car does not knock at all, the head was definitely most of the problem. Also the car does not smoke too bad at all after a WOT pull like it did back in November. The car should make some more power with the 2.3 and the Black, I think the FP4R cams are holding me back a bit on the top end and the boost drop could be a result of those cams. Maybe some GSC2s cams will help. Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Am i allowed to post yet?
Your fall 2008 is when we did our frum roll action, sorry I think calling it TnC is gay. explains why we were so close. You need vid of how it sits now, I have free time today but no good camera car. |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
I want a ride... If we both make it to BIR this year we should do Talon vs. EVO!
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Awesome car and it was cool to read about the progress you have made over the years!
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Jim, I need a ride, hopefully that'll get me off the computer and into the garage to build my 2.4.
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Epic story, I love it. Everything an evo should be. Simple and reliable at first, then slowly improved upon over time. Fighting through issues and getting it back on the road bigger and better than ever!
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Love the car Jim, awesome job building the motor.
I still cringe a bit when I see Scheides' 8. |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Great build and a good journey thus far.
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Kick ass, good job! Jealous of the black upgrade…You still on the 1250's? How much injector duty cycle did you use?
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
lag monster.
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Good story Jim.
More power still reving to 7500 rpm with the 5 speed are you going to be able to leave it in 4th and stay off rev limiter through the traps? |

I also want to point out that I have had the same Walbro 255 in my car since the beginning. 4 years/4500gallons of straight E85, high pressure mod performed to the pump, and now it's connected to a KB BAP with more voltage and it's performing like a champ! |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Jim you going to head to Rockfalls on April 9th? First test day...i'd love to see what you can do on your maiden voyage :)
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
I fixed and then installed Trevor's broken FP 25psi WG. He had broken the nipple off of it and I replaced it.
My old WG was an 18psi model. It now holds another 1-2psi more up top. Will be interesting to see if I can raise the boost to 37psi and hold 32-33 up top instead of 28-29. |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Very nice.
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
I got a ride today. 2nd gear 3rd gear the car is just an animal! Smooth power delivery but the volume of torque is just impressive all the way to redline. The new WGA definitely seems to hold boost better up top but a BCS should definitely help put it over the top. With the trans in this car out of my 8 this thing is gonna run 10's all day long with Jim at the wheel!
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
The Trans out of your 8 it would of done it. lol
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Lol with the trans and last years power would go 10s!
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
LOL Geez, just sayin there's no stopping this thing now!

Here are some updates:
Spring Dyno Day http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2683/...1c58ed0f_z.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/..._Dyno_2011.jpg I have been waiting to have Shane retune the car once GSC S2 cams arrived but they are still on backorder. GRRRRRR! Ran out of time waiting so had the car retuned for the MAP event. Shane at work once again! http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da...22hp_boost.jpg http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da...d_vs_Black.jpg Old Red setup vs new Black setup http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da...tout_609hp.png Shootout mode http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ymierb8u9Eg&hd=1 My wish list for parts this summer: -GSC S2 cams or Tomei PROCAM 270 -Full blown 70mm TB -Port the intake -replace stock UICP with something flanged for a TiAL BOV -O2 dump Maybe 550hp is possible |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Eww gross. O2 dump! Keep that thing recirculated. It's not a race car.
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
So that's why you were there yesterday:)
Great numbers! Get it down the strip now! |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
What made you decide on the S2's? I thought your plan was to get the 5R's?
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Quote:
Tomei PROCAMs are 11.5mm and GSC S2 are 11.2mm IN and 11mm EX. The FP4r are 11.12 IN and 10.9 EX. Lift isn't everything but it seems the S2s have more top end on MIVEC evos. The Tomei's look real attractive but I would definitely need to upgrade the TB and intake to take advantage. The car spools nicely, quicker than my RED 2.0 setup, I hate to add too much more lag as I enjoy the quick spool up. |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Tomei seems to be making some really nice cams right now. I know some X guys are having great luck with them too. The guy who bought my IX actually swapped in some Tomei's since the 4R's were damaged.
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Huge gains over your 2.0/red setup holy cow! I can't wait to see what you can do with this thing this weekend. Between the taller 4th gear and the massive gains in the powerband you should be kickin some ass!

I'd imagine you're going to clean up the stock appearing class! If you can some how make a heat shield so you can run that class

It runs much better than when you drove it, it only made 475hp and was kind of laggy when I borrowed the car to you. SD hack on ecuflash requires a lot of work but after 500hp the stock MAS is junk. Coming to BIR at all this weekend? |
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Even if it didn't run well. It was still awesome! Makes me want an evo. I might show up for some night fun, but I have to work during the day on Sat. so we'll see.
|
Re: TalonFiero - E85 powered Lancer Evolution IX MR
Jim what compression ratio are you running?
