91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
I had a little impulse buy the other day and picked up this 1991 Galant VR-4. The kid that sold me the car told me it's name was Paula because that's the name of the hot mom he bought it from. I decided that "Slutty Paula" was more fitting since just about everybody and their mom has owned this car in the Fargo area.
It's number 708/2000 Like I said, the car has been around the block once or twice, so I'm not 100% sure what's all done to it, but I do know the following: -New o2 sensors -New timing belt -New valves -16g -full exhaust http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a98...4/IMAG0004.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a98...4/IMAG0007.jpg Like all dsms, there's a few things that need attention. First thing I noticed was the oil pooling in the vc well area. I took the vc off thinking that the gaskets just needed to be replaced and found a big crack :( I plan on tig welding it up tonight, shaving the vc, and powdercoating it. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a98...4/IMAG0015.jpg Future plans: -Change my sn to HiImBrian -Research and fill my head with knowledge -Throw it on a dyno to get a baseline It feels good to get back to my dsm roots, and I look forward to whoring up style like back in the day :) -Brian |

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
lol. Ya he is. He told me the car needed only a fender and hood. And it the pics it looks alot worse. lol.
If your looking for parts, I was gonna go to the junkyard here to see if they still had the white Galant out there. I need some small interior stuff off it, but I could look for some parts for ya. I am headin that way shortly anyway so it wouldn't be a big deal. |

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
I say JB weld that VC haha
Also, SN should be Mr.91GVR4 :D |
Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
Thanks for the warm welcome back guys. It's nice to have something to have a car to work on and fix up again. I didn't get as far as I would have liked to tonight with the valve cover, but we did successfully weld the crack. The previous owner tried to seal the crack using rtv which not only didn't work, but also caused a ton of extra work for me cleaning the vc before we were able to weld the crack. The weld is nothing too pretty, but it covers the crack and hopefully will stop the oil leakage. I plan on sandblasting the vc at work on monday and powdercoating it myself.
And goodhart, I'd much rather get rid of all this "Mr." mumbo jumbo and stick with HiImBrian ;) |
Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
I tig welded up the crack and I think that should solve my leaky vc problem. I figured since the vc was off that I might as well powdercoat it too.

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
Thanks Brad.
Funny story: I went into Autozone here in Fargo to replace the pvc since mine was a little sticky and $4 later I was driving home with my new pcv valve. Once I got home I gave er the ol suck n blow only to find that it didn't have a good seal. Well, I don't need a crappy pcv, so I brough it back and the Fonzie lookin guy there basically thought I was an idiot for thinking that a pcv is a one-way valve. He figured since he could hear the little ball shake back and forth that it was good. Anyways, I was able to shoot some degreaser in my pcv and it works like a boss now. the end. |
Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
Wow, that VC actually made the whole engine bay look nicer haha
LOL @ parts store know-it-all guys. |
Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
^Thanks mike,
Now I've just gotta figure out why it's got such crappy idle surge. I checked out This Page on VFAQ and tested my ISC and got 38ohms for each pair of pins, so I think it might be something else. Basically what happens is when I stop at a light or something, the rpms will rev up and down like 300rpms consistently. Any advice? |
Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
Nice job on the valve cover!

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
On the BISS screw on the throttle body there is a rubber o-ring that seals it.

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
^thanks! I'll look into that and go over a few things this weekend. I've got the FE exam this Saturday, so unfortunately I won't get to play much till after that :(

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
I tried to do a boost leak test tonight and failed miserably. I forgot that my boost leak tester is a 2''-3'' coupler that I used on my old 50trim. I tried to rig something up so I could at least shoot a little air through the system and I found zero leaks which can't be right considering it's still all stock piping. So I guess I'll have to get a different coupler and try it again some other time.
On another note, I found out that my "16g" is really a 14b :( The kid who sold me the car obviously didn't know what he was talking about, and I was dumb for not looking into it closer. eh oh well, not the end of the world. The good news is that the 14b has zero shaft play and it's in great shape at least. Sometime when I've got more time, I'll machine a fiav blockoff plate and see if that calms down the idle a little bit. The idle surge kinda comes and goes, so idk what to really think about that. Quote:
My final concern about this car is that it'll grind if I try to shift into 3rd gear whenever the rpms are over 2500. The kid who sold the car said there were a couple bearings or something that needed to be replaced on the front of the transmission. He explained it to me a little and it sounded like no big deal, well I'm starting to think it's a bigger deal than he made it sound. Any thoughts/comments about what could be causing the slight grind? Maybe I'll upload a video sometime. |
Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
Like I mentioned before it could be worn out synchros. Have you tried changing the fluid? Maybe it's old.

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
I see over on GVR4.org you were asking about intercooler setups. Personally, I picked up an EVO core from GoodHart and am gonna do custom piping to it. Others go with the ETS kit, but thats a little spendy new.
I have seen others run a back door style intercooler off a 1g. But it takes some work to get it to fit right. Mainly making room between the sides on the radiator to fit the piping. I have also seen people use the JDM FMIC setup but they are said to not be much of an upgrade. |
Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
Thanks for the reply. Yea I thought about going with an evo fmic, but I feel like it might be just as easy to get an ebay setup with pipes as a package and then cut/weld the pipes to work. The evo fmic are nothing to brag about if I remember right. I mean, I don't plan on ever going past a 16g, so it'd probably work for me, but I'll probably go with an ebay one for convenience sake
|
Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
Ya, I know they aint that great, but for me it will do fine. And what they call a FMIC on the galant is funny as hell. lol.

Re: 91 Galant VR-4 "Slutty Paula"
Hey Brian, I got a nice autometer boost gauge 30-0-20 that I can get rid of for pretty cheap, works perfectly. Send me a PM if interested. Includes everything like you would buy new, mostly everything is sealed still.
