My Newest project....

Well....I had some issues with the 1g I had, motor went to hell. Was getting bad blowby, and I was working so much that I sold it to someone who would at least use it.

After a few months my buddy's around here started getting back into the Honda's..what a shame. lol. Than another friend got a VW Golf GTI, and after driving that I needed something fun again. lol.

After searching for a decent car that was close, the best I could find was this
95 GST Riced out. lol.
http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...T/IMG_0439.jpg

Sadly, it needs alot of work. Car was originally black, but someone did a cheap respray of red. Car was lowered, not sure on what yet. Kinda scared to look. It has an Ebay 16g on it and FMIC. I am planning on getting the car running good again. And than whenever the body shop at work slows down I will get it painted. I am sure it will def be a challenge.

Here are some more pics:

Hopefully I will be able to get into my buddy's garage for a while. I was bound and determined to get the new clutch line installed today for it. But when I went outside I found this.

We got quite a bit of snow last night. lol. Hopefully will be moving it this week.

I haven't got pics of the interior yet either. lol.

And yeah, the snow is great. My Subaru loves it. lol. We were supposed to get more but the storm kinda went around us. Oh well.

Oh my...lol Anything can be fixed though. A paint job will go a long way as far as looks go. My Talon looked like ass until I finished repainting it. It'll be interesting to see what you do with this.

I hope I can actually hold onto this project for a while. It usually seems that right when I start getting somewhere something comes up. But now with work being busy..sometimes to busy..and me and the GF finally got a decent house to live in I believe I shouldn't have any problems keeping this one around.

As long as the world dont end in December I plan on having this for a while. lol

That is the plan down the road...one of my biggest reasons for getting a 2g. I had found a couple fwd turbo cars around here, but they needed more work and I couldn't awd swap them.

Re: My Newest project....

Well...was able to actually get some work done on the Eclipse. Started tearing into the engine bay. Its pretty nasty. However, on some good news. The car does appear to have the Evo3 intake manifold. If my search was correct. So thats at least one good thing.

While I have it apart this far, I am considering doing a wire tuck. I do not plan on having the car running anytime soon. So it would give me time to do that.

Any thoughts on why I should or shouldn't do a wire tuck.

Re: My Newest project....

Well, seems as how the GF and kids are out of town visiting family in ND I thought I would get some work done on the Eclipse. I have decided to do a mild wire tuck for now. Not quite sure how much I will do.

I already moved the fuse box down to the passenger frame rail. I seen it done on a car over on DSMTuners, and it looked like it worked alright. Plus, I only now have to lengthen the wires going to the battery.

http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...-28-19_985.jpg

Also while working on the wiring I found this connector. It wasn't plugged into anything. Kinda curious on what it is. It would be right behind the battery.
http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...-34-14_693.jpg

Also found that at least the muffler on the car is an Apexi muffler. Not to bad. Sucks that its still the factory downpipe though. lol. Oh well...Pleanty of time to upgrade it. lol.

Re: My Newest project....

So..been doing some work on the GST now that I was able to get it into a garage. First thing was to find out why it wouldn't turn over by hand. Come to find out there was quite a bit of water in the motor. Not sure where it came from though. The radiator was empty when I got the car, but it has a hole in the bottom of it, so I dont thing that would be it. And the the oil looks good.

I cleaned all the water out and it turns over by hand great now. Still very much confused on how that much water got in it.

second thing was found out the ebay 16g turbo on it is junk. So as of right now gonna throw on my old 13g off my 1g. I know its not ideal, but Christmas has hit the pocket book finally. lol. so gotta use what I have. And also looking for a new intercooler setup for it. The core is bent and twisted, and leaks. Plus I need all new couplers for it.

Good news was I found the car does have a legit Greddy Type S bov on it. Kinda cool. lol. Now just to finish up the wiring and do a compression test. Hopefully that will be this week.

Perkul8r 12-17-2012 11:36 PM

Re: My Newest project....

Well, did a compression test tonight. Results were not so good. Just under 75 psi in #4. So i took the head off to see whats up. first off, found out one water passage on the HG has been pushed into the #4 cylinder. Than while turning the motor over I found something odd. #4 does not sit flush with the block. It must have bend a rod. Crap.

Well that dont look right.
http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...-51-01_666.jpg

So seems as how I already had the head off and had the tools available, i decided to just yank the motor.
http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...-22-23_974.jpg

Wasn't to bad being by myself. Was kinda nice and quiet. Was able to just work.

Perkul8r 12-21-2012 03:11 PM

Re: My Newest project....

So quick question for you guys.

I pulled apart my motor and found a bent rod on #4. I already knew this when I pulled the head.

However, when I dropped the block off at the machine shop today, me and the guy noticed that the rod must have slapped the very bottom of the bore. Its kinda hard to describe, but its right at the bottom of the cylinder. Small indention.

Now the cylinder is still smooth around it. No rough edges that would gouge into a piston skirt. But now I am worried that the block wont be useable.

What are my chances that seems as how its right at the bottom that it will never hurt the piston and rings?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: My Newest project....

It shouldn't be an issue. I would have him use the bore gauge right around there to make sure the metal didn't just push around the dent. The metal has to go somewhere. Being down that low it should be fine. Have a pic of it?

Perkul8r 12-21-2012 04:18 PM

Re: My Newest project....

i will try to get a pic of today. Just not sure if I will be able to. I dont have my car right now so getting from work to there might be an issue.

Perkul8r 12-22-2012 02:39 PM

Re: My Newest project....

So i was able to swing down and get some pics right before they closed. they aren't the best, but it was all i could get.

The guy doing the machine work on it says he dont think it will cause any issues. Its well below where the lowest ring goes. he's just gotta check the bore now.

http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...-55-22_891.jpg

Looking at it again, it goes up further than I thought. But hopefully it will be ok.

I remove more material than that when I clearance my 2.3 motors for use with Manley I-beam TT rods. Looks like you should get away with it.

I'm far from any kind of engine builder but those main bearings look beat up to me. What did the oil look like?

I really cant tell how the oil was. When I drained it, it was mixed with water. So it was pretty nasty when it came out. And it has sat for the last two years.

As far as me and the machine guy can tell, this motor has never been taken apart. So the bearings might not look the greatest.

However, I am pretty sure this guy was running the car lean. He was venting to atmosphere, but when he did that, he never closed the BOV return on the Intake tube. He just had a cheapo filter on it. so it was sucking in more air behind the MAF. So i dunno if that would contribute to anything on the bearings.

Re: My Newest project....

Well, finally starting to get somewhere on this car. After finding all the wrong stuff on the motor, I started getting parts together.

Got the block back from the machine shop. Bores where in factory specs, just needed a finish hone. Crank was ok, rod journals did have to be turned.

I ordered ACL mains and rod bearings from MAP. Got them earlier this week. However the mains were wrong. MAP came through and got ahold of ACL for me, and got me another set coming. Very happy with that.

With the water that was in the bores, and the one bent rod, I was not wanting to use the rest of them. Seems as how i am not doing an all out build, and still on somewhat of a budget, I picked up a set of EVO 8 pistons/rods.

So right now just waiting on my main bearings to show up and than I can start assembly.

So tonight I just finished up cleaning up the block.

Looks all pretty, for now. lol.

Well..I know its not quite engine related, but picked up an Eprom ECU and a socket so I can get the ecu ready for dsmlink. Gonna do my best to set this car up right. Its about time i actually do one right. lol.

Re: My Newest project....

Well. Bit the bullet and bought Link V3 full tonight. It was spendy, but like I said, I wanna do this car right.

So just waiting on the main bearings and studs to put the bottom end together. I ended up ordering main studs cause I misplaced the main bolts I had. Once i get the studs installed, I will torque them, than take it back to the machine shop to have it checked out. I know they aren't needed for my setup, but they aren't spendy so i went for it.

I was hoping to have parts today, but forgot it was Presidents day. So no mail for me. Oh well. Just gotta be patient.

As for link v3 you'll love it. I had it in my old talon and it was definitely worth the money!

I'll admit. With most my dsm's I have just thrown in a wideband, cranked the boost up, and watched the wideband. I have never actually taken the step at getting some sort of tuning on them. I guess I just got lucky those times.

But this time I wanna get the most out of the car. So i knew I was gonna have to have some sort of tuning.

Re: My Newest project....

With my old talon I started out with an safc and then went to link and link was so worth it. My current talon is running an aem right now but will most likely eventually switch to link

Re: My Newest project....

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was sure you were supposed to line bore/hone, when using ARP main studs. Something about how the studs apply more force than the main bolts and can distort the bore size. I think that might be a "you should" instead of a "you need to" type thing though.

JET 02-20-2013 12:48 AM

Re: My Newest project....

I would highly recommend getting it line honed. My engine builder didn't do it on my first engine and it crank walked. Yes it was a 6 bolt. 2nd one I built myself and was line honed and no issues.

You should do a lot of things when building a motor. Most people don't do a lot of them. Pretty much what gives DSMs their rep.

Plastigaging, however, is something I'm anal about. No need to line hone if it clearances fine.

Re: My Newest project....

Once the main studs are in and torqued it will be. Going to the machine shop. They said they would check it. I have read both sides of the line bore/don't line bore stories. And have just decided to have the machine shop take care of it.

Re: My Newest project....

Ok, so after checking over what I already have and what I need for my car. The biggest thing I am missing right now is a turbo.

The car had on it an Ebay 16G that was leaking oil like crazy. And the only other turbo I have laying around is the 13g? off my Auto 1g. And I know the 14b is an upgrade on a stock 2g.

So my question is, do I try to find a 14b or go bigger? I would really like to have a turbo possible of 300 whp. But want something thats fairly quick spooling.

This build is a mostly stock 2g rebuild. Except evo 8 pistons/rods. I am really new to the this part. I was trying to find some reading on turbo compressor maps and what not, but thats all over my head at this moment. So any help or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

CornFed2.4 02-21-2013 12:31 AM

Re: My Newest project....

Just find an MHI 16G or send your ebay turbo to turbo lab for a rebuild.

goodhart 02-21-2013 12:35 AM

Re: My Newest project....

a 14b might be able to get close to 300whp on a FWD car like this. Otherwise I've seen a lot of 16g's go for 3-400 bucks on t00ners lately.

Now, I am not saying I only want a MHI turbo. I am ok with looking at other ones. Just no sure on what to look for.
