6 bolt swap 97 tsi
1 Attachment(s)
Just picked up this 97 tsi shell from South Dakota last night. The car is awd 5speed and has 101k miles. This car is pretty clean with almost no rust. It came without a motor, tranny, intercooler and exhaust. It only came with dsmlink v3, eprom ecu and a walboro 255.
The plan is to swap the 6 bolt from my 92 laser and run it stock until I gather all of the equipment to build it next spring. The plan is an oem build with 2g pistons and an evo3 turbo. This car will be my daily up at UMD until I figure out what I want to do. I will keep you guys updated on the 6 bolt swap in the mean time. So far I still need to find an exhaust, tranny and xfercase, TPS, ps pump and bracket, a/c bracket and a front passenger axle. I will start tearing apart the laser tomorrow morning and post pics as I go. Enjoy! :split: |

Looks clean.

Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Awesome! I went and checked this car out a few weeks ago. Pretty clean. I went to UMD too!

Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
I love me a clean 2gb talon. Looking good!

Update on the car. Goodbye laser, 6 bolt went in a few weeks ago. Just got her started Monday. Hopefully get the exhaust done and reset the link settings for stock injectors.
Only problem right now is that I can't connect to my ecu. A window always pops up and says that it can't find the port. Any advice? |
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Another thing. I went to hook up the vacuum lines for the fpr and the intake manifold and cant seem to find the fpr solenoid. Do I need one in order for the car to run good? Or will it cause bad idling/airfuel ratios?
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Holy clean 2gb!
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Thanks! Haven't gotten her first wash yet, more pics to come!
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Try wiggling/ pushing all the connectors (especially the obdII) together. Sometimes they come apart, and I don't believe you need the fps. *but don't take my word on that*
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
I already did, I get a quick flash from the link cable right when I plug it in but then I'll try to connect to the ECU and it says that it can't find COM1 or something.
Yeah I did a little research and talked to a few guys. They said I can just run a vacuum line from the intake manifold to the FPR. |
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Do you have more than one usb port on your computer?
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Yup it's a mac with 2 3.0 usb ports. I have windows 7 partitioned to another part of my hard drive which is what I run link with. I've been able to use regular USB's just fine on both sides of my computer.
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Did you download it to a specific usb port?
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
idk about 2g's but on a 1g you can year out that fp solenoid without even getting a CEL. I think on a 2g you can do it but you have to check the emissions box in link or something.
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Were you suppose to download it to a specific one? I thought it didn't matter which USB port it was plugged into as long as it got downloaded into the computer?
Goodhart yeah I checked around and it seems like I should be safe running without the solenoid as long as I run a vacuum line to the fpr from the intake mani. |
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Mine would only work on the port closer to the memory card slot ( macbook pro) or it would freeze after connecting. Is the most recent version downloaded from here http://www.ecmtuning.com/downloads.p...c23rfg5rvl6e47
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Thanks I'll give it a try and download it to my mac side and see how it goes. If not I'll reformat my windows side and re-download it to there.

Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
I had a friend try to plug in his laptop to eliminate some possible causes of link not being able to connect. He is running link v3 full on his 2g also and the ecu still would not connect. We then plugged in an obd2 CEL logger and it was able to pull codes. Now we can eliminate the Laptop and the OBD2 port being a cause. Any ideas on what it could be? How do I test the link chip?
Another problem now, I redrilled new holes and heli coiled the threads where the exhaust manifold bolts to the head. I went to bolt on the turbo to the exhaust manifold and ended up cross threading the bolts :( We'll see how it goes tomorrow when I attempt to remove the bolts and see if its the threads or the bolt thats f*cked up. Anyways, heres some pics of the car. She is now up in Duluth, made it up here just fine. :) Running a little shitty because of the major exhaust leak after the manifold though. |

Her first wash!
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
That thing looks nice!
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
I've seen the car in person. Its a really clean car top and bottom.
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Thanks guys. I pulled out the turbo manifold bolts and it seemed like only the highest threads on the bolt were stripped. I put a nut in between the bolt and manifold so only the bottom threads are holding it on. Ghetto rigged but it will have to do for now until I get some new OEM bolts. I can finally feel boost!!! :) The boost controller I bought from C3LICA (Brad) actually came off the threads and came apart. Now in need of a new boost controller. One problem after another. DSM 4 Life! hahahaha

Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Is the car quiet now?
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Yes it is. Nice an quiet at idle and roars at WOT thanks for the help with the exhaust! Should I spray some hi-temp paint on the welds to keep away the rust?
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
That would be a good idea. Wire brush the welds before painting it
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
did u get link to work. i run on my mac. had to search the webs to get my port to work also. cant remember the link though
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
That sucks about the boost controller! Remember what you bought it for? I could give you your money back if you wanted to give me the boost controller back.
Car looks super clean though! |
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Thanks for the tip, will any hi-temp paint work?

Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
No still haven't gotten link to work yet, I don't have wifi at my place so I couldn't search the web for info on connecting with the port. Maybe I'll just try to connect with link at my campus... lol
If you find the link plzz let me know! Quote:

Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
No its cool, you only sold it to me for 10 bucks lol no biggie. But thanks!

Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Update: Got link to work, I never downloaded the updated drivers (face palm). Got the random misfire to go away. Also, my injectors were set to 560's and I'm still running stock 450's! No wonder my car was backfiring.
REBUILD NEXT WEEK! Parts I picked up: -Evo 9 pistons/1g rods (Got a good deal on these) -Ross racing pistons/eagle H beam rods -Cometic engine gasket kit -ACL tri metal main/rod bearings -arp headstuds -fel pro composite HG from oreillys -PTE 1000cc injectors -Gates timing kit -Balance Shaft eliminator -AEM Wideband -Redline cocktail for the transmission Maybe pick up redline lightweight for the Xfercase and rear diff. (Or should I grab the 75w90?) This is my current plan since she will be my school car for the next few years until I graduate. She will maybe see the track once a year but other than that I will be driving her to work once a week and maybe a cruise every weekend along the North Shore. |
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
I might have some redline stuff for T-cases/transmissions. I'll look.
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
got i want this bod lol
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Anyone able to help me install some evo valvesprings this week once I get her pulled out? Name your price! Else if I can borrow the valvespring compressor I'll grab you a case of beer or something.
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
I may have my one I made in my box, I will check when I get home tonight and get back to you. Are you going to be in St. Paul or Duluth?
|
Re: 6 bolt swap 97 tsi
Thanks I will be in St Paul, let me know.
