Exhaust Piping

I have been doing a fair amount of exhaust work lately so I went out and bought a welder, cut off saw, big air compressor and all the other goodies I need to do it all at my house.

I like to do mostly stainless steel work, but I can also do mild steel if you are on a budget.

I have made a few systems unlike any other on the market. It is mandrel bent 3" stainless steel O2 housing. It is extra long so it can be run alone at the track. I connect that with a stainless steel V-band clamp to the down pipe. This makes it so that you can drop the exhaust with one bolt! I will have my system done shortly and I also did one like this for Brian Barton. Here is a pic of his:

More close-up pic's coming soon!

Where do you get your piping from? Just curious.

Enes 07-29-2004 03:58 PM

V-band clamps... how much are they each... 2.5"

basicly the pipe ends.. and the clamp.. how much?

Piping from : http://www.burnsstainless.com/index.htm same place we get ours. I think he gets most of his from there. Their material quality rules. V Bands are about $75 each.

And thread stickied.

JET 07-29-2004 05:13 PM

I will have a lot more photo's once mine gets done. That was just one that Brian took of his before install. The V-band is just above the O2 bung (if you want to see what it looks like). Normally it would be above it, but the Garrett that he uses was more difficult to make than a Mitsu exhaust housing.

I will have a hookup on V-bands shortly. These are 100% stainless too, most are only stainless for the clamp, the flanges on these are stainless too. That should ensure a good seal even if it is old.

I just got the tri-mix gas, so I am all set up for welding stainless. I will hopefully have pic's up tonight.

Hey, congrats on getting a welder. What one did you end up getting? Glad you are doing mild steel stuff, I won't touch it so at least there are other options out there for people who don't care about having SS.

fievel 07-29-2004 07:44 PM

prices?

JET 07-30-2004 09:28 AM

Prices depend on the options you want. Send me a PM and we can figure it out from there.

Mike - I would rather not work with mild steel becuase it will not last as long as SS, but some people don't care if the exhaust will only last 5 years. I got a Hobart Handler 140. Like John's, but it goes higher and lower than his. It is basically the new model of his.

Here's a picture of it installed.

Sorry for the bad picts of mine (it was 5am in the morning and I had to get my car running by 6am so I was in a hurry)

Enes 07-30-2004 10:33 AM

fix the oil leak brian...

After I posted I decided that I had better stay on topic, sorry!

JET 10-20-2004 08:25 PM

Alright, I just got in $700 worth of 3" and 2.5" stainless steel piping. I already had about $300 in stock and I have about $400 worth already spoken for in various projects. So if anyone needs something done quick, I have mandrel bends, straight pipe and flex sections in stock.

I am also getting some samples of some IC couplers in and I will be becoming a dealer for one of the brands pretty soon. I will try to stock anything fairly common to a DSM. I will have anything from standard couplers to hump couplers to reducers. Prices will be good and they will be available anytime.

91 tuner 10-20-2004 09:28 PM

I would be interested in an upper intercooler pipe. When you figure it all out let me know

joem 10-20-2004 10:43 PM

Let him know if you have abs or not and what bov you have.

Jakey 10-21-2004 10:41 PM

JET are you leaning towards only building downpipes & O2 housings or are you able to build complete exhaust systems?

91 tuner 10-22-2004 11:57 AM

Non ABS, 1g bov

JET 10-27-2004 06:18 PM

I am doing full exhaust systems (or any part of it) and IC piping. I work mainly in 2.5" and 3" stainless.

DeAdGnRaTiOn 10-31-2004 09:56 PM

I sent a PM, not sure if it went or not. I was just asking for the prices on a full exhaust system 2.5" and 3". 1990 AWD Eagle Talon Tsi. If it is in my price range, i'm down. Thanks playa.

Pimpin Dsmstyle 12-09-2004 03:11 PM

Is there any benefit to JUST doing a cat back exhaust with an after market muffler? I am going to get rid of the cat because i was told it does nothing but restrict and suck mileage on my car. If i did this, i would just do 2.5" cat back. My pipes are pretty rusty and what not. Pricing? If you dont care, i would be happy with mild steel or whatever it is called due to the cheaper cost. I am not in it for the performance increase so much.

JET 12-09-2004 03:40 PM

Yes, a cat-back will be a decent increase in power. I basically only do SS for exhaust, it isn't much more that mild steel from the place I get it at. You really want a DP back exhaust (eliminate the cat, since it is a drag car I can do that :D ). PM me for pricing.

Re: Exhaust And Ic Piping

Could you post up some close-ups of your welding?

Thanks!

sent a note, not sure whether or not you recieved it yet but i was juss wondering how much would a 2.5 or 3 inch full exhaust system be? it would be for a 1990 eagle talon tsi, thanks........

Re: Exhaust And Ic Piping

PM sent. I will be posting up some winter pricing pretty quick that will be valid until the end of March.

Re: Exhaust Piping

how about a custom o2 housing, not for a dsm though, for a 99 galant with the 4g64, alot of us have problems with o2 housings, cause we can actually use a dsm manifold, and turbo, (flipped around) but we don't have an o2 housing, if you want more info, pm me.

Jakey 07-31-2005 10:23 PM

Re: Exhaust Piping

Price Please:
3" SS cat back + 3" SS test pipe + 2.5"-3" SS w/flex downpipe?

What do you use for mufflers (stainless of course)?

JET 07-31-2005 10:39 PM

Re: Exhaust Piping

I use a stainless straight through muffler. It has a slant cut on the end with the burn tip. They look really nice. They also have a silencer that quiets them down a ton. Good for long trips or something. They are not real loud, but middle of the road. A resonator can also be added if you want a really quiet system.

It would be a full 3" system with a neck down to 2.5" right at the O2 housing. The cat-back would actually eliminate the cat. Price for a 1g AWD would be $650. I don't think that you will find anyone that can touch that price, and I guarantee you can't if you look at the quality.

Re: Exhaust Piping

So I would imagine it would be a little more for a GVR-4 system like this as they are a bit longer? I can get a system for 700 from the galant board, but would rather support the local guy as much as possible. Any possiblity for a twin tip muffler for a more stock appearance?

JET 08-01-2005 06:49 AM

Re: Exhaust Piping

I did a local GVR4 2 weeks ago and it looked great! He was extremely happy. It would be $675 for a GVR4.

Re: Exhaust Piping

how much for a tsi awd 3" from my downpipe back? Thanks.

JET 09-24-2005 02:04 PM

Re: Exhaust Piping

$425 and I am booked up for about 2 weeks. Everything is stainless, flanges and all. It includes a N1 style muffler with a slant tip.

iceminion 09-25-2005 04:56 PM

Re: Exhaust Piping

Hey Jet, remember my GVR4? well assuming the weather is correct and the dsm gods are willing, it will come back from LSE tomorrow....driveable...maybe

IF it works, then its gonna need the exhaust, we talked about a turbo back 3" SS exhaust with an 02 dump, and a resonator for $900-950 I believe?

Also, you probably remember how much of a bitch I am when it comes to noise, so could you weld a flange (or something) right at the muffler? so that I could use the N1 muffler on track/race days and a magnaflow(non-straight through) for the rest of the time? maybe 4 wingnuts or something so that its actually easy to swap mufflers.

Thanks

Yeah, send me a PM when you get the car back. I am about 2 weeks out on a new project right now.

Here is a pic of a 3" O2 housing I recently finished. It is internally dumped for a 16g with a V-band attached to mate up to the 3" DP. Only one bolt to drop the exhaust!

Awesome.

My cousin might be interested in a 3" turbo back system, minus the muffler.

Re: Exhaust Piping

Jet could you shoot me an estimated price for a 3" SS Turbo-back including the O2 housing with the V-band clamp like your pic,No cat, and an N1 style muffler? for a 95 GS-T stock style turbo.

JET 10-16-2005 07:41 PM

Re: Exhaust Piping

$975 because on FWD's you have to go over the axle, which is a PITA.
