Another Computer Question.
 

I have gone though and reinstalled windows on several occasions to try and clean shit up, but no matter what I can always find old files and thus always continue to get pop up ads with programs like IE. I don't use IE for everyday shit anymore, but online classes that I have aren't compatable with Firefox.

I want to be able to have EVERYTHING on my comp whipped out. So it's like getting the computer brand new from Dell.

I'm not much of a computer guy but isn't there a difference between reinstalling Windows and reformatting your HD? I had a buddy of mine reformat my computer a couple months back and it cleaned up my hard drive immensely. All I did was transfer everything I wanted saved to an external hard drive.

Well, it won't wipe everything but SP2 blocks ALL pop-ups. It is really sweet and I haven't had an issue with either my home computer (XP home), laptop (XP pro) or work computer (XP home).

If you re-install windows without formatting the hard drive it only overwrites the files it is installing, it doesn't go through and erase stuff that shouldn't be there or cookie files or otherwise. Formatting is the right way to reinstall in the case you are describing. Back up whatever files you consider important and if you want to make sure there is no question, go to a command prompt and type format C: let it finish and you will have a freshened disk ready to install windows like it was never there.

reboot, hold the <f8> key at the beginning and choose command prompt only then run it. It is just a way to be absolutely certain it was formatted. The OS install disk should give you the option to format the disc as one of the first screens anyway.

If you continue to have issues I can send you GWSCAN.You just put it on a floppy, reboot with it in the drive, it will run a full diagnostic and some performance tests on the harddrive and then write zero's to the whole drive.Its very easy, even if you don't have a clue what you're doing.

Allan, I just reformatted last night. When it shows you the partitions, highlight the partition and hit "D." It will then ask what style of format you would like. Go with the NTFS, but not the "quick" version. Takes a good 20-30 mins to format it, but I have nothing from the past still on my HD. Then go ahead and load your XP or whatever OS you are using.

It was just local network settings. Their wireless router is set up to not do DHCP so it was just a matter of getting the correct IP and gateway on the local interface. Windows in all it's design brilliance still required a reboot after this was done before it started working correctly. Not supposed to require it, but MS doesn't make perfect software. I better quit before I go on a "winblows" rant haha.

Someday the whole world will use a Unix variant and my life will be better. Of course that would support the theory of evolution. Hmmm, maybe it won't happen afterall. Thats okay, us unix guys will own everything then.

I sooooo want to fucking beat the shit out of everyone who works for Dell. They are all fucking idiots! Call one # and they say it's business and your systme is for home office. Call that number (another 45 minutes) and they say you need to speak to business support since it's a portable item. Call another # (another 35 min) and they tell you you need reg business (I was xferred to corportate business). Now I'm at the right person, but he doesn't seem to speek any fucking english. WONDERFULL!

I'm trying to solve a simple issues with loading outlook express and after my now 1 hour and 1 min phone call he's saying my problem was the install of windows. HAHAHAHAHA YOU have got to be fucking kidding me! I want to hang him by his fucking testicals!

Well fuck it, I'm gonna just try reinstalling EVERYTHING again. He put me on hold for anohter 5 min and came back again to say my problem was in the installation. NO SHIT! I was telling him that for the last hour. So in a polite way I just asked him what call center I was talking to. I was curious I said. He said some city in India. I then told him he wasted an hour of my time and probable took one of my buddies job so go fuck yourself and hung up.

Dell Support sucks!

I have it all fixed now. Up till almost 4am getting is all fixed up and everything seems to be working fine.
