My Buddy's New Toy

3 Attachment(s)
This is a buddy of mine's new bike. He rode a '98 or '99 GSX-R 750 for a couple of years, sold it about two months ago, and picked up his new Aprillia a couple weeks ago. He already has a Power Commander, rear set, and exhaust on order for it.

Yeah, I believe he said it retails for 19K.

Wow...that's a really nice bike. I like the carbon Fiber on it also. Nineteen Thousand huh? Just as expensive as a Neon Srt-4, but twice as quick...:D.

I was going to ask how much he paid. But 19K to rich for my blood. I don't know why I thought Aprilla's where cheaper then yamaha or Suzuki

Damn that thing looks sweat, I like how that looks more than JETs new GSX-R100 even. Probably not near as fast though, well I guarantee that. Not worth the price though to me.

I like those. When I can afford one, and am more comfortable riding, I will have one.

Not much for the digital speedo though.

Digital speedos and tachs suck...

I don't know about that, haven't compared the specs of each bike to one another.

Yeah, that bike isn't in the same category as the 4 cyl liter bikes for HP (38 hp less and 60 lbs heavier). Twins sound pretty cool though. I have always had a soft spot for Aprilia's too, but blue wheels? That is a sweet bike though. Gotta love the Mille R's, stock ohlins suspension is cool shit. I believe it has magnesium wheels too. The tail looks pretty sweet too. Is it a hold over model? It isn't the current color scheme.

For you other guys, basically all the new bikes have digital speedo's. Mine does too, but I have a gear indicator too. That is pretty sweet.

Whee!! Double post, doh!

A gear indicator would be nice to have. Half the time I don't remember where I am in the gearing. I just go by the tach.

BTW, Jet, what rpm do you usually cruise at? Just curious.

It is a brand new '04 model.

Re: My Buddy's New Toy

Naw, I usually cruise at 5k or so. I did get it up to 9k in 6th last weekend though (140), but I backed off because I was trying not to go over 8k rpms. 200 more miles!

TheBlizzard 04-29-2005 09:29 AM

Re: My Buddy's New Toy

Yeah when I am just cruising I usually keep it right around 5k to 6k as well. Then if you have to accelerate really fast just go down one gear and you are right in the powerband (depends on redline of your bike though).

Out of curiously, what kind of oil are you guys using in your bikes? I use Honda OEM 10W-40 in my Kawi since it shifts nicer than with the Kawi oil.

Some bikes don't need to downshift :D

Chris, I am using Havoline 10-40w car oil for my break in. Yamalube for 750 -1,500 miles and I will be switching to Royal Purple max-cycle in 10w40 at 1,500 miles.

Kracka 04-29-2005 02:18 PM

Re: My Buddy's New Toy

I assume the car oil helps the clutch discs break-in? May I ask why you have choosen RP? From all the UOA's I've read I highly advise against using any RP products.

JET 04-29-2005 05:16 PM

Re: My Buddy's New Toy

Car oil is cheaper and won't be in there long enough to break down during break in. Lots of people run it in their bikes all the time. One of the most popular oils is your beloved Rotella-t!

Where did you hear bad about the royal purple? I actually don't know many people running it, but they are a high quality oil and redline doesn't make a motorcycle specific one. Amsoil makes one, but I am not a fan of amsoil. Redline says you can use their regular oil in bikes. Maybe I will say screw it and just use regular mobil 1 like I have in the past or I might go with Motul 5100 synthetic.

Here is a great article on the subject of oils.

Kracka 04-29-2005 10:44 PM

Re: My Buddy's New Toy

I do love the Rotella-T! Personally, I would never use car oil in a bike though due to the wet-clutch systems. That friction additive package is very benefitial that comes in 'cycle oils. I hear bad (and see the proof in the forms of UOA sheets from Blackstone Laboratories) from just about everywhere. That stuff is nothing more than a gimmik started by a salesman. Amsoil consistantly outperforms Royal Purple (even though I hate that stuff too because it comes from Superior, WI *shudder*).

Kracka 04-29-2005 10:53 PM

Re: My Buddy's New Toy

I just skimmed over that article and never once (at least that I saw) did it mention the wet-clutch additives present in motorcycle oils so I am going to judge that a test which proved nothing relevant.

Re: My Buddy's New Toy

Word from back home is that the majority of the accessories for the bike rolled in today. I can't wait to get home and see the newly "revised" beast.
