I don't usually literally laugh out loud, but I did to this. My wife wondered wtf, so I had her read it. That's one of the best stories I've heard.

LOL my wife did that once in the evo8. She said it was just the weird floating feeling when I 'did that shifter thing' (NLTS) that gave her stomach butterflies. Good shit :)

Awesome looking forward to seeing what it picks up at the track! :mj:

I’m going to dyno it to after I get my Magnus V3 Cast intake on the car. I did check the IDC @ 35 PSI, on a set of 2150’s it is 83% @ 9krpm, with an AFR of 11.6. I’m using a base fuel pressure of 44.5psi. I don’t have a comparison to that from the old setup. I would need to turn the boost up to the mid 40 psi range to even start to compare.

In the power department I changed a lot of things this year:
Map stage 5 head (The head that was on the car was a factory cast head!), bumped compression by a point, billet 76mm compressor wheel on the 42R, 3.5 aluminized steel to 4” aluminum exhaust, and to wrap it up I’m waiting on the new cast Magnus intake manifold.

I also figure that I removed 125 lbs from the car, even with adding carpet and door panels.

This year should be good, hoping to get deeper in the 9’s, a trap speed of 160+ would be nice too.

what did u do to raise compression?

Add material to the combustion chamber? I thought you upgraded to the 4202 GTX billet 74, but billet 76, dang.

What fuel pump do you have?

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

The GTX 4202 is a 76mm.

Yep GTX is a 76mm, so is PTE. Garret will not upgrade a cast 74 wheel to a billet 76, however PTE will. 800 dollars buys you a billet wheel, compressor housing and an aluminum back plate.

This wheel is sick.
This is a better pic:

I gained compression by building a new long block this year, so new pistons. I’m using a fuel lab pump, I think the 1800 hp version?? Got it from MAP, It has an internal speed regulator. I had an A1000 with an Aeromotive pump controller, sold it all on E-Batch for almost the price of the new pump! Funny thing is that it flows more fuel in idle mode than the A1000….Unfortunately I need to upgrade my FP regulator to a pro series Aeromotive unit. The standard a1000 Aeromotive FP regulator would not return enough to the tank, thus raising fuel rail pressure making tuning a bitch.

9:1, it was 7.8:1. I cannot wait to get a fresh supply of E98 to get the boost up to where it was last year. Then I can see how this setup shines!!

It's a good thing that she is a great sport. The last time she rode in the car it had a GT4067R on it, tuned at 30 psi. Its not the same carnival ride now!

Nice, F video I want a ride.

7.8:1, thats pretty low. I can't wait to see this in action i didn't get a good look at your passes last year.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Well it’s been awhile since the last post. The car is running great. I have a fresh supply of E98 and I’m off to the track once again in hopes of getting my license passes completed. I hope the car makes it off of the trailer this time! I went out today for a quick 3rd gear pull to check the tune, AFR's are good and boost holds 43psi, so tomorrow should be a good day if everything holds together! I should get my magnus cast manifold next week, hopefully it will give me enough time to get it in before the MAP event.

2 runs to go. First 4 short runs went great. On the 3rd pass I let off at the 1000 foot mark and passed the 1/4 mile beams at 10.06 at 127mph, with a 1.60 60 foot. Now for some 9's.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

My first 4 passes had 1.6 60 foot times. My alternator belt came off on my 4th pass in the morning, so I went and picked another belt up in Eau Claire The temperature outside was 88 degrees by the time I got back, the track was biting hard, but I never raised my 2 step to compensate so the car bogged on both launches. The last two passes went good, both over the 150 MPH mark. Still achieved a 10.006 and 10.041 with high 1.8 sixty foots. Good enough for my license, all you need to do is go faster than 135MPH or quicker 9.99. They had no issues with my car. I found 2 licensed drivers at the track, there were about 5 cars that were running faster than 9.99 so finding licensed drivers to signoff was easy.

My only issue that I have and it sucks is that I’m about 90% sure that my flywheel loosened up on the last pass, I will be removing my engine/trans this week to inspect. I will do everything I can to make it to the MAP weekend with a 100% running car. Anyone have tricks to make sure the flywheel will stay on? I used Red Locktite with ARP bolts and cleaned/degreased the crankshaft and arp bolt threads before installation.

Jim when are you going to get the EVO to the track for a shakedown pass on the new setup?

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

IIRC JET got so sick of his flywheel bolts coming loose that he actually tac welded them after torquing them. A bit extreme, but I'm sure they'd stay tight after that!

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

What did you torque the bolts to? I torque factory bolts to 135 ft/lbs with a lot of red locktite.

Good luck I to will be putting my stuff back together and trying again at the MAP event.

This happened to me once.

My solution was to use a spacer plate (is that what they're called?) from an auto dsm as well as longer arp flywheel bolts from an mr2. And also lots of red loctite.

I saw your transmission carnage, it’s too bad. What sucks is that this is the reality of high powered DSM’s, always one run away from catastrophic failure. The dog box route is crazy expensive, and still problem prone if not operated perfectly. I asked Shep what the cost was about two weeks ago and it was around $7K! He said that he is testing and possibly going to release a 4th gear upgrade for 1G awd’s. I’m keeping track of the number of 4th gear pulls in my car, once it hits around 75 runs through I will be replacing 4th gear proactively.

If I remember correctly I applied 130lb/ft of torque. I spoke to an engineer co worker that deals with vibration and fasteners. He thinks my mistake was that I used oil under the head of the fastener and not locktite. My thought was since we use no washers I wanted to make sure that the torque applied to the fastener was used to compress the flywheel and not fight against friction on the face of the flywheel during the installation process thus not controlling the actual clamping force. Unfortunately that surface should apparently be used as a friction surface after the locktite sets up.

Anybody have a uncut OEM 6-bolt 100mm crank for sale?

Green is good for wicking threads in applications that have fastners preinstalled. I'm going to try red again.

Yea I saw some people wiring the flywheel bolts, I saw a post on NABR talking about. It will definitely stop the flywheel from actually falling off, but unfortunately the bolts can still loosen up. Thanks for the input!

I don't think I would try this quite yet, too many other possible failure modes created by welding.

So did the spacer go on the bolt side of the flywheel? I wonder if it would fit a QM twin flywheel? At least it would act as a large washer.
