Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

Last weekend my buddy and I went to Chicago and picked up my new project. It is a black 1998 Eclipse GSX auto. I was looking for a car that I could drive on a semi daily baises so A back seat for my daughter was a must have and with the auto my wife could drive it with no learning curve.. This car is only slightly modified and is in very good shape inside and out. Newer paint, leather and 18” wheels were just iceing on the cake.

Currently the car has , Supra side mound intercooler W/hard pipes Greddy type S BOV, Exhaust (dumped o2 housing, 2.5”down pipe, 3”catback W/test pipe) air filter, MBC and 255 fuel pump. It also has a large trans cooler already installed and trans temp and boost gauges. For tuning the car also has H8 flash able ECU so I can tune like the Evos using ECUflash and open port 2.0 cable, and a eprom tcu for the transmission for line pressure and shift points.

Future mods will include (probly in this order)

Cleaning up some minor issues with the interior
Drivers side speaker grill pops out.
Drivers side A-pillar is missing because previous owner had A-pillar mounted gauges and never replaced it.
Install my LC1 wideband from my Laser

Get the open port 2.0 cable and start to learn and understand ecuflash
1st I need to turn off the check engine light for rear O2 and EGR
2nd I need to raise the fuel cut limit the T-25 in cold weather has been hitting it around 15psi(might be boost leak too)

After I get it solid and I understand tuning with ECUflash future mods will be
Reprogrammed TCU for Line pressure and shift points
Tran slab shift kit
End clutch kit
Injectors/E85 swap
EVO3 16G or comparable billet unit (HTA68/ MAP EF2)
New O2 housing open dump is annoying
HKS 272 from my Laser
1G throttle body

Apperence
Lowering springs
black wheels (survey to come, use my cobra's or get these wheels coated)

And what you’ve all been waiting for pictures.

Finally, car looks awesome!!

EF1 = 68hta, EF2 is bigger. So stock appearing is going to be stupid this year between all these baby turbo cars. hahahaha

Congrats on the new ride.

How mutch? Is it the lighter grey or the darker?

Nice, competing in the stock appearing class seems like it'd be fun I think. Lemme know if you ever need a hand.

Nice! Reminds me of when I got my 2G; does this still have a 7-bolt in it?

Can't wait to see what you do with this thing!

carltalon 11-24-2011 03:42 PM

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

Yes it has a newer stock 7bolt.

Should be a fun car, looks really nice!

We drove the eclipse to Thanksgiving dinner today. Something that never would have happened with the laser. I am really likeing this car hopefully the snow stays away a little longer so I can play some more. After letting my wife drive it today I am a little worried she might be driveing it more then me though .

Looks awesome Carl, that's one of the few 2G's I've seen that I would drive. Very nice, makes me wish my blue car was an auto as well. :D

Nice looking car!

MAP has an EF2 for DSM's? The DSM turbos they are making seem like a big secret.

turbotalon1g 11-25-2011 08:45 AM

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

They made a post on tooners about it, they are finally promoting it.

As far as I know, only the EF1 and EF2 are available for DSMs.

EF1 is the billet compressor wheel and upgraded cover, I think EF2 uses a bigger hotside in addition to the coldside but you will need a diff. turbine housing I think TD06 or something.

How does it drive so far? I assume its still on pump since you didn't mention injectors, i know a guy selling some 1200s!

carltalon 11-25-2011 09:02 AM

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

It drives awsome. I need to do a boost leak check to see if I can get rid of this fuel cut. and the stock TCU is definitly retarted when it comes to part throttle shifting but so far I'm very happy with the car. It will go under the cover as soon as the real snow flys so I probly wount do mutch with it besides a boost leak and drive it for now. Unless someone has a openport 2.0 cable they want to barrow me so I can remove the DTC's for rear o2 and eliminate fuel cut.

goodhart 11-25-2011 09:07 AM

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

You can use an openport 1.3 can't you? You should only "need" a 2.0 for Evo X's AFAIK. Otherwise, I have a 2.0 cable, but Chang is borrowing it.

From what I've read I need the 2.0 1.3 will work for logging but not flashing. I should probly just buy my own but I kinda want to barrow someone elses to try to make sure Im not getting in over my head. There isn't alot of how to info on the 2g ECU. Alot of the stuff Ive been reading is in programer speak that is over my head.

goodhart 11-25-2011 10:13 AM

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

Yea, I don't get that programmer crap either. It seems overwhelming at first dealing with the xml files and all that. Looks like a bunch of gobeldy gook to me. LOL I know Dan Chang has been doing this with his 98, maybe try PMing him. Username is daneatsv8s or something like that.

Stop holding out, and post up that pic of the Chicago Pizza that made the 6 hour one way drive a little better. Damn that was some good pizza.

I use my openport 1.3 cable to flash my evo 8 ecu.

goodhart 11-30-2011 12:10 PM

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

After talking to Dan it sounds like you need the 2.0 to flash the stock 97+ ECU

A little update. I traded my 1g dsmlink for a 2G link V3 setup with no ecu. So I might be going to go dsmlink in this car. I still need to find a eprom ecu. I still want to do the ecu flash rought though so the dsmlink setup is for sale we'll see what happens

I think the silver is growing on me too, we will see. I got the lug key from the previous owner so I might swap on the black cobra's just to see how they look then add a poll.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

I did a little research and found that the Haun racecraft o2 eliminatoir downpie I had on my laser will fit on a 2g. So today I pulled the downpipe and dumped O2 housing off and test fit the HRC. It actually fits better then the one that was on the car and should be less restrictive. Best part, no more wastegate dump!! 2g downpipe and dumped O2 housing will be added to my partout thred.

I traded the link from my 1g that I'm parting for the 2g Link so I'll probly go that way. The 2g setup is for sale so If it sells I'll buy the openport cable and have money leftover for the injectors I need or parts to sure up the auto trans. I'd like to stick with Link just because I already know how to use it and it has a few features that the flashed ECU wouldnt.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

I picked up a few more parts, and am getting pretty close have ind everything I need to meet my goals.

2G hard intake pipe with mass and filter.

MAPerformance 7 bolt head studs with dog point tips.

2g FMIC with pipeing.

I was planning on seeing how far I could push the supra sidemount But I picked this kit up pretty cheap and sold the sidemount for enuf that I basicly swape.d to a fron tmount for the same price it would have cost to get the J-pipe i needed to use the sidemount with the EF1. The intercooler is a little small for my tastes, but is probly plenty big. I can always use the pipeing and upgrade the core in the future.

I'm still in need of a few parts if anyone has what I need.

injectors (1000cc +)
2g EPROM ECU
1g style turbo oil return.
translab shift kit
End clutch kit

I've been looking for those. but to get the drill bits and the newer check valves you need the TL-175-HP I can only fing the non HP kits on ebay. its probly worth the extra money to not have to chase down the bits. unless some one already has the drill bits.

I found the HP kit for $50 on ebay might have to go with that. http://www.ebay.com/itm/All-KM-OD-Hi...item2eb13565d5 I like the $28 price better though.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

I did some work on the car today. Mostly electrical work.

Installed 95 EPROM ECU with DSMlink V3
Cleaned up some of the ECU wireing done in the past.
Installed my LC1 wideband and wired it into the ECU for loging
Reinstalled the Brake Switch controled relay for launch control
Wired up the relay for ECU controled full line pressure to the auto trans

I also removed the T25 turbo. Swaped the coolant lines to the EF1 and modified the oil drain to work with the EF1. Just need to pick up a turbo gasket set and oil feed and the EF1 and my ported 2g manifold will be ready to go in.

the car started and idled on the new ECU setup and I could conect with the ECU so everything seams good. I can not wait to get this thing out on the roads and feel the Magic.
