I agree, the 30-06 is a fairly bigger cartridge than a .308/7.62, with similar bullet diameter. In any case though, they can both easily shoot accurately over 600yrds which is crazy for deer hunting. God I wish I could go deer hunting this year, can't hunt with rifle in many parts of Iowa.

Good luck, hope to see some good buck pics.

Took a doe this morning just for the meat. There is a decent 8 point and 9 point that I've seen on the trail cameras in the past week. Here are a couple of pics of them.

I watched the doe I shot for a good hour walk around my stand until I decided to just take it since nothing was following it. I was hoping one of the bucks would have been on its ass but never happened.

I decided to rig up my go pro with a handle bar mount onto the barrel of my shotgun. I captured the kill on the go pro and it was pretty interesting to watch and how clear it turned out. I'll see if I can upload it here in the next day or so. Off to bed, up in 4hrs to do it all again and see if I can get one of the bucks!

Good luck to the rest of you!

Noisey ass neighbors killed any chance we had on Sat. 5 kids running around screaming most of the day. We moved Sun afternoon, then the guy behind where we moved to decided was a good time to start splitting wood. Ugh! We did scout out the state park over there and I think we might head there next year.

That sucks Jet, was that on the 40 acre land you were going to hunt on? Yea if any houses are near there, or even a highway, it can really get loud. Even up past Grand Rapids where we were hunting, highway 38 is close by and you can hear quite a bit of road noise which is distracting.

Well we didnt do too great, it was really slow. At 830AM opening morning, a pretty decent sized buck came into my view directly in front of me about 80 yards away, but behind some really thick dense trees. It all happened so fast, and as it was walking to the left, I moved my scope view over to the next opening of trees and waited for it to come into the cross hairs. I took the shot as soon as it entered and I thought I had it, but I must have only grazed it. It dont know if it fell down, it just made lots of hoarse noises and then slowly wandered off. We spent about 2 hours tracking it, found a blood trail but it slowly faded and that was it. :(

My dad got a button buck just for the meat yesterday and thats all we got for 4 guys. Right after he took it, a big buck walked behind him but he couldnt take a shot, maybe it was the same one I hit, hard to say. There were tons of scrapes where we were hunting, but my camera didnt catch any deer while we were up there.

Ill post some pics later but it was still a blast! Well see if I get back out there in MN otherwise I may hunt WI.

Around Cambridge though it is farm country, the deer are used to lots of noise. Even with the moron neighbor getting practice with his chainsaw Saturday afternoon/evening we still had 3 does come out.
We hunt just west of Isanti about 3 miles.

Saw five total, one retarded 3 point single antler buck. All shootable, but we were/are holding out for something with some size to it.

Come next weekend if there is nothing hanging yet we will be taking the "if its brown its down" approach.

I'm hunting the isanti area as well, 2 different properties. Since I'm bow hunting I have till the end of the year.

Yeah, the house was on the 40 we were originally on. We moved to the northern 61 acre section and found a couple really nice spots up there. I am looking forward to Sat morning, hopefully we can get something!

Sucks that you couldn't find yours. I had the same thing happen last year with one of mine. Several hours of tracking then lost the blood trail in a plowed field. Are you heading up again this coming weekend?

Re: The official Deer Hunting thread.

Nothing.

Hunting on a two different WMA's for the entire rifle season in section 240 resulted in a few deers spotted, but none were able to be taken. In fact the main area we hunted usually yields 12-15 good deer, 2 were taken this year.

Thinking the population is down combined with increased pressure means I need to buy some private land to hunt on.

Ryan and I plan on hitting a few wildlife WMA's the next few weekends with shotguns to try to fill out the tags in section 601. Hope we can!

Scrapes were very limited. Little signs of the rut, but I did find beds and poop, plenty of those around.

Took a doe tonight since it was the last night of my season and I wanted some fresh venison. Got her at 60 yards in the neck first shot, then put one more in her head from the stand to try and put her out of her misery and took her eye out. Still didn't wanna die so I walked out finished her. From the looks of it, she was about 2 yrs old, came out with two yearlings that looked like they were hers the way they were acting. I'm guessing she was last year's yearling and got knocked up since wasn't very big. I would have loved to get a buck but this is about all there was this year.

Geez, trigger happy? lol Nice doe though, good meats.

Looks like I might hunt in WI again this weekend for opener. The land I hunt on there are scrapes and a few spottings of a very big buck, so i set up my camera over the weekend, well see if I can get any deer walking in the daytime. They are notorious for night walking, which if thats the case, I might not even hunt.

Wish I could bow hunt this year, I really need to get on that. Hopefully next year I can get out there, just not enough time it seems.

I haven't deer hunted with a gun in prolly 3-4 years now because I'd rather get mine with bow.

Yeah I used to rifle hunt but now I just take a break and don't go out at all when all the crazies are running around with guns during the two weeks of gun season.

Got my son a deer hunting stand for his B-day, now we just need to find some land to hunt on. I need to get him his first deer! If anyone knows of anything we could hunt on (there are just the 2 of us) that would be great. We have been hunting on public land and are planning on going farther up north this year by Mille Lacs probably.
