need new tires what to get?

so my neighbor slashed my tire. well it's a very small puncture in the side wall. I know it's not recommended but I patched it so hopefully it will get me by for a little while till I get new tires. so what I would like to know is what are your guys recommendations? my talon is awd and I want something more performance minded this time around but I drive it in the winter too. anyone running summer tires in the winter with awd? any info is greatly appreciated. thanks

What are you after? Summer? All-season?

Summer:
-sumitomo htr-zIII
-fuzion zri

all-season:
-fuzion hri
-continental conti-extreme-contact

I drive it year round but I want something that will perform better in the summer. so I'm wondering since I have awd if I could get by with some good summer performance tires without getting stuck everywhere in the winter?

and i'm just wondering what other people are running

Don't drive summer tires in the winter. It's 200% stupid, you can do it, but its dangerous. I've been there, and yes its possible but it was only due to circumstances. If you're buying tires for all around performance summer & winter, just get a nice set of all-seasons. I had the continentals mentioned above on my evo for 2 winters, half a summer, a few falls and a few springs. They're great all-around all-season tires.

Depending on what size you want they're around $100/tire, pretty great bang/buck

I've heard that the Sumitomo HTR+ all-seasons are decent too, but I've never used them personally.

Others will have plenty of opinions to add to this discussion (kracka) I'm sure ;)

that's kinda what I figured with the summer tires. right now I have the kumho ecsta asx all season tires and they are all right but I kinda want something better

Summer tires in the winter=Idiotic. I couldn't even make it in my driveway when I didn't get my summer wheels off in time and it snowed on me.

I have the Conti's on the front of my mustang right now. Not big enough for the rear so I can't tell you how they are for keeping the wheels from spinning. But up front they were a huge upgrade over my Toyo's. Much stiffer sidewall than the Proxes 4's. Seem to hold a grip even in the cold weather better. I like them, they aren't the cheapest but they are far from spendy too.

Get a set of stock wheels and throw some cheap winter tires on them, you will be amazed at the difference. Then use your wheels now with some summer only tires like the HTRZ III. You will be much happier.

Anything that does both even reasonably well will be expensive and still only OK at either. I say buy a dedicated set of summer tires for whatever wheels you're running now. Then put those all seasons or some winter tires on a cheap set of wheels. Remember, even if AWD will get you moving and keep you planted in the corners braking will still suffer immeasurably.

these are actually pretty good all season tires. I think apart from Michelin, Goodyear makes great all season performance tires that lasts a while depending on the tire size.
here is what i suggest.

well I figured out what I'm going to do I'm gona pick up a mint set of 98 gsx rims with some basically brand new fuzion hri's in a week. they may not be the best tires but they are all season tires and I like the 98 gsx rims a lot so it should be ok

Now that you have the tire situation figured out, think of a way to burn your neighbors house down, sleep with his wife/gf, kill his dog and piss in his cereal. Honestly who slashes tires?

I agree completely. So far my HTRZ III tires have been great.

What to say what to say...

For a high-performance all-season tire I'd look towards Kumho or Yokohama as they both make multiple variants that would fit the bill. BFGoodrich tires aren't too bad but they lack tight quality control so don't be surprised if at least 1 of your 4 is defective is one way or another. Sumitomo all-seasons are nothing special (their summer tires are great though). Goodyear tires are over-priced and under-perform.

Keep in mind though, no all-season tire will be excellent at anything; they'll be ok, good if you're lucky, but a far stretch from great at anything. I suggest what other people are saying and picking up a cheap set of stock wheels for some snow tires (the cheapest winter tire will far outperform the best all-season in snow and on ice). Whatever you do though, do not attempt to drive on summer tires through the winter.

I would definately burn his house down but since I live in a town home and his is connected to mine I don't think that would be a good idea. but I'll think of something.

as for the tires I'm getting a set of 98 gsx rims that are mint with some all season tires on them. I'm going to have them powder coated black and then run the tires that come on them until they wear out then put summer tires on them and just keep the rims that are on my car for winter wheels

Re: need new tires what to get?

I'm sure you can find a nice set of stock used rims with some winter tires that have atleast 50% tread left on them for around 100 picked up locally.
