Clutch explosion

Soooo fun story.

I was JDA (Just driving along) and showing my friend what I thought was a potentially loose bolt in the front strut/trans area. We were cruising at about 25mph changing gears and decided to do a small pull, maybe 10-12psi in 3rd gear. I waited for my lag to go away and it pulled moderately and as I went to shift, BWAHHHHHP. No gears, no nothin. Engine revved freely and the clutch slave cylinder was moving properly and shift cables still attached. A small disk like button was sitting by the boot of the trans, telling me my clutch hub had apparently sheared into pieces separate from that of the pucks. It didn't make noise before, during, or after the process but it certainly seems like the only possibility at this point. I will admit to it being a poor quality 6 puck unsprung disk and a fairly heavy duty pressure plate, and aftermarket flywheel and OEM TOB but we'll see soon hopefully what the true damages are... Wish me luck and hope it's only a shitty disk that did me in.

time to pull the trans

xtd clutch disc?

Re: Clutch explosion

Yep time indeed. I have only had the trans put in with the engine so hopefully this can be done separately from the engine...

Ding Ding Ding bingo. Gonna replace it with ACT 6224004. http://www.advancedclutch.com/6224004

Assuming that's all that's wrong.

1g or 2g? 1g's are a little easier from my experience. Not a real tough job though either way. You can take the trans out the bottom and keep the engine in. Take off the front passenger crossmember, xfer case, and axles and the rest you should be able to see.

2G but that's really good to know so thank you, I will give that a shot.

Re: Clutch explosion

on a 2g i believe you have to support the engine because there is more motor mounts on the trans then a 1g

Re: Clutch explosion

2g has 3 tranny mounts.

Re: Clutch explosion

Forgot about that yea. 1g is the opposite, 3 motor mounts 1 trans mount.

I'll probably have photos tomorrow evening. I already had one piece of button shaped metal, fall out the boot...

The transmission part number is registering with an Evo III so unfortunately this might be a more complex problem than anticipated. More details to come. There is a guy called the clutch doctor in North Branch that I will contact and see if he can fabricate any necessary parts for a cool custom setup but I gotta see the damage first.

Re: Clutch explosion

dont mess with random shops there a dozens of tried and true setups out there that will save you tons over a shop, dont make it more complicated then it has to be. i would go with a clutchnet 6 puck sprung. but thats just my opinion

Re: Clutch explosion

Agreed. Go with something proven and save yourself the headache.

As for the Evo trans, you'll be fine. I don't know anything about how they mount, but Evo III transmissions are an upgrade. Just do some reading. :D

I will certainly listen to that advice and stick with a proven setup. I have always worried about breaking springs out of the disks. I want power safely held up to 650/700 HP. I am getting to see how the Evo III's are an upgrade but I'm wondering if the final drive ratio is a problem with the rest of my drive train? I'll do roll out tests etc tomorrow and collect more part numbers. I guess they are just as modifiable and rebuild able...

Re: Clutch explosion

the reason i recommend clutchnet is because they are the only disc ive seen that completely covers both sides of the springs, so the springs cant escape like ive seen a million times on different discs. i was going to toss a clutchnet 6 puck in my car but 123abc had his clutch die so i gave it to him as a wedding present. someday ill buy another for me

Re: Clutch explosion

I'd go with twack's recommendation, they have springs but are contained so they can't fall out.

Re: Clutch explosion

My plan is to run my ACT 2600 pressure plate and a clutchnet disk.

Re: Clutch explosion

I certainly plan on taking the advice. Is there a place I should buy them or is direct the only/best way? I did some digging: http://www.jackstransmissions.com/pa...ars-and-ratios

Gives me all the reasons to keep my trans, but I need to make sure the ring gears and differentials are all in the same boat. However: http://www.jackstransmissions.com/pa...-rpm-and-speed

My ratios seem much more along the lines of stock gearing based on speed vs rpm. So until I really tear into things, I have no clue what concoction is really going on here.

My talon was originally an auto, so I can only hope that the people who did the swap were smart enough to match all these components. This doesn't exactly answer why my clutch let go yet, but if a rebuild is in order then so be it. I imagine the input shaft could be worn out and that the vibrations didn't help, along with cheap quality. I can only hope this hasn't hurt my bottom end.

Re: Clutch explosion

in all honesty i think your trans is just fine, your clutch was cheap and just let go. unless you find otherwise when you take the clutch out.
