Trouble getting axle out (Pics)

So I'm in the process of taking my passenger side front axle out of my 95 GSX, so I can pull the motor. The bearing housing is bolted directly to the transmission. 4 bolts hold the housing to the tranny. The bottom right bolt is giving me trouble. I've broke the other 3 loose, but there is no possible way (that I know of) to get to it. The lower control arm (directly under the axle) has framing that goes up and over where it bolts to the frame, kind of like a shield. Please someone help me with this problem. There's a 14mm socket on the bolt that needs to be broke loose.

The axle should come right out... I don't understand why you're trying to remove this "bearing housing".

I haven't seen it like that before.. are you able to wedge like a crowbar or something similar between the axle itself and the axle seal on the tranny?

It should just pop right out of the Tranny, that green thing and all. They can be a real bastard to get out sometimes

Wow you really took a lot of stuff apart for this. I don't remove the axles from the wheel end, but it will give you room to work at least.

Like everybody said you shouldn't need to take apart any bolts on the tranny to get the axle out. There is a "C-clip" on the end of the axle splines holding it in. You have to use a pry bar against the green part of the axle to get it to pop out. Usually a quick burst of force works better then pushing on the pry bar for a long time with all your might.

Everyone has told me to do that. My prybar and pickle fork won't do the trick. On the drivers side axle, I tapped on the bearing like it said (rubber mallet, hard plastic mallet, 16 ou framing hammer, 20 ou ball peen, then a 5lb short sledge), same issue. After I unbolted the housing, it just slid right out like it had KY all over. I'm just finding it easier to just unbolt the housing and take it with the axle. The only thing I can forsee working is using a closed wrench underneath.

If you are having problems pulling the axle out, there is a trick to try. Pull the inner joint outward so it is tight. Turn it 180 degrees around and then push it and pull it out real quick. The little C-clip that goes in there is only 2/3rds as round as the splines. Someitmes when it is facing down, it will lock the axle in there. When you pull it tight and turn it, you don't allow the clip to spin in there. Then when you release it, it drops down a little and the axle will pop out when you pull or pry on it.

It may take a few tries, but it will work.

Also try prying the axle from two opposite sides with 2 seperate prybars, this has worked in the past for me when I had my passenger side stuck in there pretty tight.

Re: Trouble getting axle out (Pics)

I wanna thank you guys for chiming in. I was out there for about 3 minutes after I posted, and ended up buying a 14mm open/closed wrench (didn't come with my set!!) for 8 bucks. Broke it loose with the aid of another open/closed. Took out the 4 bolts. Still wouldn't come out. Looked in the Helms again and noticed that they wanted to pry the piece I wanted off. I did that as my buddy was pulling. After my 3rd whack, he went down like a sack of rocks after hitting a wall 3 feet behind him. I went from pissed off to rolling on the ground. Good times. Time for it to come out finally. Thanks again guys.

The auto trannys have the metal piece bolted around the axel. I have not had to take it off befor to get the axel out.
